Our Kick Me Interview and discussion with Garry Huggins

Kick Me Facebook page

Kick Me interview with Filmmaker Magazine

Kick Me Trailer (mildly NSFW)

The Doom Generation director’s cut (1995): Discussion. Read Gregory J. Smalley’s review of the original. Director has remastered his nihilistic teen flick and restored a number of scenes that were cut (probably for being too offensive), but will it make a difference? Briefly screening in a few theaters (mostly Alamo Drafthouses), with a Blu-ray almost certain to follow. Indiewire article on the restoration.

Keane (2004): Discussion. Read Pamela de Graff’s List Candidate review. Keane is a gritty NYC-set return for t to the exploration of mentally illness that he mastered so well in Clean, Shaven (1993). Grasshopper restores and reissues it on Blu-ray. Buy Keane.

“Wings of Disaster: The Birdemic Trilogy”: Discussion. Read Alex Kittle’s Birdemic: Shock and Terror review. All three of ‘s Birdemic disasterpieces—full of animated gifs portraying deadly attack birds—are now available in one handy box from Severin (including 4.5 hours of exclusive bonus content). The latest, Birdemic 3: Sea Eagle, is also sold separately for Nguyen stans who already own the other two. Buy “Wings of Disaster: The Birdemic Trilogy.”

“100 Years of Warner Brothers: 25-film Blu-ray sets”:  Discussion. To celebrate a century of filmmaking, Warner Brothers is releasing four volumes of 25 Blu-rays each, themed as “Vol. 1: Awards Winners,” “Vol. 2: Comedies, Dramas and Musicals,” “Vol. 3: Fantasy, Action and Adventure,” and “Vol. 4: Thrillers, Sci-fi and Horror.” Of particular interest to us are Vol. 3 (which includes Pan’s Labyrinth) and especially Vol. 4 (which contains 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, and Natural Born Killers). The links above will allow you to both buy the set and, almost as importantly, see what films are contained within.

WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE:

Please join us tomorrow night for the  near-midnight, unofficial-but-authorized US Internet premiere of Plan 9 from Aliexpress (2022), an experimental “trash” feature from Russia boasting the tagline, “You Won’t Understand a Single Thing.” We begin at 10:15 PM ET on our Discord channel. You can always see our screening schedule in the sidebar, but as a reminder the next offering after that is Reality (2014) on Friday, Apr. 14 (‘s birthday!) at 8:30 PM ET.

Next week’s Pod 366 guest will be (of the FP series, and a new upcoming project he’ll be talking about). In written reviews, Amy Vaughn describes Q. Dupieux’s Power Rangers-ish lark, Smoking Causes Coughing (2022); Shane Wilson takes on another that Came from the Reader-Suggested Queue with The Mysterians (1957) (a vintage tokusatsu that would make a decent double feature with Coughing); Giles Edwards goes ahead with today’s pod subject, Kick Me, ahead of its Panic Fest date next week; and desperately pleads that you will read his Give Me Pity! (2022) review. Onward and weirdward!

Quick links/Discussed in this episode:

Smoking Causes Coughing (2022) Discussion: https://youtu.be/XKVs4y-OPD8?t=174. A tobacco-themed superhero group go on a morale-building retreat between adventures. It’s ‘s buzziest movie in some time, and it’s finally here (in theaters and on VOD). Official site. Buy or rent Smoking Causes Coughing on VOD.

Enys Men (2023) Discussion: https://youtu.be/XKVs4y-OPD8?t=481. A woman observing a flower on an isolated island hallucinates. The trailer emits strong 1970s folk horror vibes. In theaters now. Enys Men official site.

Exorcist 3 (1990) in 4K: Discussion: https://youtu.be/XKVs4y-OPD8?t=769. Read Eric Young’s review. A movie adaptation of ‘s novel Legion that originally had no exorcism in it, so the producers demanded one be added in so they could title it “Exorcist III.” III got the last laugh, since it gets a 4K UHD remake, while the original Exorcist does not. Buy Exorcist III.

Son of the Stars [Fiul Stelelor] (1984): Discussion https://youtu.be/XKVs4y-OPD8?t=1066. In the year 6470, a husband-and-wife astronaut team crash land on a mysterious planet and leave their son behind while searching for a missing woman. A psychedelic Romanian sci-fi feature for children of all ages, made by and the rest of the team behind Delta Space Mission. Buy Son of the Stars.

Blood on Méliès’ Moon (2016): Discussion https://youtu.be/XKVs4y-OPD8?t=1436. A filmmaker (80s Italian exploitation film director Luigi Cozzi, starring as himself) searches for a lost Georges Méliès film and ends up in a parallel universe. Unreleased in the US until Intervision picked it up for a surprise Blu-ray release, pairing it with the surreal Cozzi children’s film Little Wizards of Oz (2018) and the documentary Fantasticozzi on a separate disc. Buy Blood On Méliès’ Moon.

https://youtu.be/ql-NkUkwd_A

The Residents Triple Trouble (2022): Discussion https://youtu.be/XKVs4y-OPD8?t=1843. An ex-priest replaces his love of God with a love of fungus. The first feature film from the experimental cult band (they of the giant eyeballs), this played at a few underground film festivals but slipped our notice—until now. Triple Trouble official site. Buy Triple Trouble.

Vertigo remake?: Discussion https://youtu.be/XKVs4y-OPD8?t=2063. is apparently attached to a remake of Vertigo. Early April Fools’ joke? Deadline doesn’t seem to think so.

WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE:

Just to reiterate upcoming guests on April’s Pod 366 entries: Garry Huggins (Kick Me) jpoins us on 4/6; (the FP series) on 4/13; G.B. Hajim (Strange Frame: Love & Sax) on 4/20; and Terri McSorley and Erich Kursten (“Acidemic“) on 4/27.

Also, join us tonight at 9:00 PM on our Discord Channel for a screening of ‘s bizarre (but good-hearted) cross-dressing documentary, Glen or Glenda (1953).

Also we will be “debuting” a new trash/experimental feature, Russia’s Plan 9 from Aliexpress, on our Discord channel. We’re looking for suggestions as to the best time to schedule to reach the widest audience. Current options are 2 PM ET or 10:15 ET, both on Saturday, April 8. If you want to catch this (it could be your only chance), please weigh in with the best time/date in the comments section here. We will try to accommodate the maximum number of viewers.

Also, we will be hosting more regularly scheduled Weird Watch Parties this week! You can see the schedule in the sidebar, but we’ll reiterate here:

Friday, Mar. 31 (As mentioned, tonight!) at 9:00 PM: Glen or Glenda (1953) on Tubi via Discord (free)

Tuesday, Apr. 4 at 7:30 PM: Solaris [Solyaris] (1972) on Freevee via Discord.

And of course, we continue with print reviews. Next week, Shane Wilson describes the indescribable L’Ange (1982); Amy Vaughn Czechs out The Cassandra Cat (1963) [AKA The Day the Cat Came]; and takes a trip with Damselvis, Daughter of Helvis (1994). Also, Giles Edwards ears are burning because we’re mentioning his upcoming review of the lesbian-punk-post-apocalyptic-whatsit Flaming Ears (1992).

Onward and weirdward!

KC International FilmFest (Mar. 26-29)

New Directors, New Films (New York City, Mar. 29-Apr. 9)

The Overlook Film Festival (New Orleans, Mar. 30-Apr. 2)

Manbaby (2020): Read Gregory J. Smalley’s review. Watch on Tubi.

The Five Devils (2022): A young French girl has family problems and a preternaturally developed sense of smell. Psychological thriller (perhaps?) that is earning occasional critical adjectives like “strange,” “bizarre,” and even “weird” (though more often it’s termed “magical realism”). The Five Devils official site.

Flaming Ears (1991): A wacky Austrian underground lesbian film from the early 90s set in the distant post-apocalyptic future (2700, to be exact). On Blu-ray from Kino. We’ve posted it before but here’s that crazy trailer for you once more. Buy Flaming Ears.

INLAND EMPIRE (2006): Read the Canonically Weird review! The Criterion Collection continues its conquest of the David Lynch catalog with the addition of what is indubitably his most surreal and baffling work. Buy INLAND EMPIRE.

Stanleyville (2021): Read Giles Edwards’ festival review. The absurdist comedy about five people invited to compete in a strange series of trials for a chance to win a habañero-orange compact SUV gets a Blu-ray (and VOD) release from Oscilloscope Laboratories. Buy Stanleyville.

The World We Knew (2020): There’s a surreal aura in the deserted house six crooks hole up in for the night after a job gone wrong. It debuts in its native UK on DVD this week (although it’s been available streaming in various places, including Amazon Prime’s Freevee, for a few weeks). Watch The World We Knew (with ads) on Freevee.

WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE:

In next week’s written reviews, we’ll take on some underground weirdness as Giles Edwards considers Plan 9 from Aliexpress (2022) (a Tatar movie boasting the tagline, “You won’t understand a single thing) and braves ‘s psychedelic microbudget ZAPPER! (2023). By contrast, Shane Wilson‘s re-review of the deranged kiddie flick The Peanut Butter Solution (1985) is positively mainstream. And of course, the week will be capped by another busy Pod 366.

Also, we will be hosting more Weird Watch Parties this week! You can see the schedule in the sidebar, but we’ll reiterate here:

Saturday, Mar. 25 at 2:00 PM ET: Dementia (1955) on Tubi via Discord (free) (matinee screening)

The Completists

Boston Underground Film Festival: Runs March 22-26 in (you guessed it) Boston. Movies of interest include the retro sci-fi Divinity; folk horror Enys Men; Piaffe (a sexy movie about a woman who grows a horse tail); the “esque” fantasy Moon Dream; and ‘s highly anticipated latest, Smoking Causes Coughing (trailer here).  Boston Underground Film Festival home page.

Country Gold (2022): Read Giles Edwards’ festival review and listen to interview with director Mickey Reece. Reece’s latest unclassifiable movie is a semi-surreal biopic of a fictional country music singer. Opens this week in NYC, traveling to select cities afterwards, then streaming exclusively on Fandor starting April 4. Country Gold linktree.

Glorious (2022): Read Giles Edwards’ review. Is this the weirdest movie set in a glory hole? Find out on DVD or Blu-ray (or VOD). Buy Glorious.

Leonor Will Never Die (2022): Read Gregory J. Smalley’s review. If you like brutal Filipino action movies and you like heartwarming weirdness, this is the movie for you. DVD, Blu-ray or VOD. Buy Leonor Will Never Die.

Phenomenon (1985): Read Gregory J. Smalley’s review. Dario Argento‘s nutty movie about telepathic insects (!) gets the 4K treatment (!) from Synapse. Includes three cuts of the film and a ton of extras spread over two (UHD only) discs. Buy Phenomenon [4K UHD].

“The Room” remake: A remake of the accidental comedy The Room, with Bob Odenkirk in the role? Apparently it’s not an early April Fool’s joke. For those who believe that imperfection should not be messed with, the good news is that it’s being done as a benefit for The Foundation for AIDS Research. Slashfilm has the deets.

Zapper! (2023): Criminals try to steal a longboard in a psychedelic universe where bananas fire laser beams. This sophomore microbudget feature is advertised as “a trip by ” and debuts on Tubi (and some other free services as well.) Zapper! on Tubi.

WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE:

Next week’s Pod 366 will have a special guest: , director of Manbaby (now on Tubi). In online reviews, Shane Wilson tackles another one that Came from the Reader-Suggested Queue with the award-winning 30-minute sci-fi short “Analog” (which is available for free viewing). Pete Trbovich was intrigued enough by the description of the 60s sex comedy The Bliss of Mrs. Blossom in Pod 33, Episode 9 to drop off a full-length print review. Next up is a massive treat as El Rob Hubbard drops a thorough investigation of the “House of Psychotic Women” box set. Finally,

Discussed in this episode:

South by Southwest (SXSW) homepage.

Beth B retrospective at the Metrograph Theater: Beth B is a no-wave NYC filmmaker whose work is maybe more transgressive and experimental than properly “weird.” Metrograph screens four programs this weekend, pairing a feature and a short, including a Lydia Lunch documentary and some racy stuff. New Yorkers take note. Beth B Retrospective.

The Cassandra Cat [AKA When the Cat Comes] (1963): A sunglasses-wearing cat comes to town, and when it looks at people their color changes to reflect their emotions. This psychedelic feature has been hard to see in the US for years, and it still is; Second Run’s new Blu-ray is a UK release (it advertises that it’s region free, but buyer beware). Buy The Cassandra Cat.

Pi (1998) re-release: Read the Canonically Weird entry! On 3/14, A24 is sponsoring a one-night-only cinematic replay of Darren Aronofsky‘s mystical cyberpunk debut film (in IMAX!) Aronofsky will introduce, with comments from the cinematographer, composer, and star Sean Gullette. See the Pi re-release home page for a theater near you. If it’s not playing near you, we’ll be screening the film on Discord (sans special commentary) at 9:30 PM ET the same evening.

Unicorn Wars (2022): The second feature film from (Birdboy) is an expansion of his short “Unicorn Blood,” about a bloody fantasy war between unicorns and religious fanatic teddy bears. We’ve been anticipating this for years and it’s finally here, in select theaters (or on VOD). Unicorn Wars official site.

After that, Pod 366 will return on Friday (St. Patrick’s Day!) for another round of weird movie updates (and possibly a surprise guest).
