The Five Devils (2022): A young French girl has family problems and a preternaturally developed sense of smell. Psychological thriller (perhaps?) that is earning occasional critical adjectives like “strange,” “bizarre,” and even “weird” (though more often it’s termed “magical realism”). Flaming Ears (1991): A wacky Austrian underground lesbian film from the early 90s set in the distant post-apocalyptic future (2700, to be exact). On Blu-ray from Kino. We’ve posted it before but here’s that crazy trailer for you once more. Buy Flaming Ears.

INLAND EMPIRE (2006): Read the Canonically Weird review! The Criterion Collection continues its conquest of the David Lynch catalog with the addition of what is indubitably his most surreal and baffling work. Buy INLAND EMPIRE.

Stanleyville (2021): Read Giles Edwards’ festival review. The absurdist comedy about five people invited to compete in a strange series of trials for a chance to win a habañero-orange compact SUV gets a Blu-ray (and VOD) release from Oscilloscope Laboratories. Buy Stanleyville.

The World We Knew (2020): There’s a surreal aura in the deserted house six crooks hole up in for the night after a job gone wrong. It debuts in its native UK on DVD this week (although it’s been available streaming in various places, including Amazon Prime’s Freevee, for a few weeks). WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE:

In next week’s written reviews, we’ll take on some underground weirdness as Giles Edwards considers Plan 9 from Aliexpress (2022) (a Tatar movie boasting the tagline, “You won’t understand a single thing) and Gregory J. Smalley braves Nick Gatsby‘s psychedelic microbudget ZAPPER! (2023). By contrast, Shane Wilson‘s re-review of the deranged kiddie flick The Peanut Butter Solution (1985) is positively mainstream. Phenomenon (1985): Read Gregory J. Smalley’s review. Dario Argento‘s nutty movie about telepathic insects (!) gets the 4K treatment (!) from Synapse. Includes three cuts of the film and a ton of extras spread over two (UHD only) discs. Buy Phenomenon [4K UHD].

“The Room” remake: A remake of the accidental comedy The Room, with Bob Odenkirk in the Tommy Wiseau role? Apparently it’s not an early April Fool’s joke. For those who believe that imperfection should not be messed with, the good news is that it’s being done as a benefit for The Foundation for AIDS Research. Slashfilm has the deets.

Zapper! (2023): Criminals try to steal a longboard in a psychedelic universe where bananas fire laser beams. This sophomore microbudget feature is advertised as “a trip by Nick Gatsby” and debuts on Tubi (and some other free services as well.) Zapper! on Tubi.

Next week’s Pod 366 will have a special guest: Tim Lightell, director of Manbaby (now on Tubi). In online reviews, Shane Wilson tackles another one that Came from the Reader-Suggested Queue with the award-winning 30-minute sci-fi short “Analog” (which is available for free viewing). Pete Trbovich was intrigued enough by the description of the 60s sex comedy The Bliss of Mrs. Blossom in Pod 33, Episode 9 to drop off a full-length print review. Next up is a massive treat as El Rob Hubbard drops a thorough investigation of the “House of Psychotic Women” box set. Finally, Gregory J. Smalley gets around to officially addressing reader-favorite Brain Damage (1988).  All of that should get your spring started off on a bountifully weird note.

Beth B retrospective at the Metrograph Theater: Beth B is a no-wave NYC filmmaker whose work is maybe more transgressive and experimental than properly “weird.” Metrograph screens four programs this weekend, pairing a feature and a short, including a Lydia Lunch documentary and some racy stuff. New Yorkers take note. Beth B Retrospective.

The Cassandra Cat [AKA When the Cat Comes] (1963): A sunglasses-wearing cat comes to town, and when it looks at people their color changes to reflect their emotions. This psychedelic Czech New Wave feature has been hard to see in the US for years, and it still is; Second Run’s new Blu-ray is a UK release (it advertises that it’s region free, but buyer beware). Pi (1998) re-release: Read the Canonically Weird entry! On 3/14, A24 is sponsoring a one-night-only cinematic replay of Darren Aronofsky‘s mystical cyberpunk debut film (in IMAX!) Aronofsky will introduce, with comments from the cinematographer, composer, and star Sean Gullette. See the Pi re-release home page for a theater near you. If it’s not playing near you, we’ll be screening the film on Discord (sans special commentary) at 9:30 PM ET the same evening.

Unicorn Wars (2022): The second feature film from Alberto Vázquez (Birdboy) is an expansion of his short “Unicorn Blood,” about a bloody fantasy war between unicorns and religious fanatic teddy bears. We’ve been anticipating this for years and it’s finally here, in select theaters (or on VOD). Unicorn Wars official site.

The Bliss of Mrs. Blossom (1968): A bar magnate’s wife keeps a lover trapped in her attic. B’Twixt Now and Sunrise (The Authentic Cut) (2011/2022): Read El Rob Hubbard’s review of the original Twixt. It seems Francis Ford Coppola paused work on Megalopolis for a bit to recut his 2011 horror flop; it will be interesting to see how this effects the final product. Blu-ray only (at the moment). From Beyond (1986): Read Gregory J. Smalley’s review. The 80s  Lovecraftian horror about creatures coming into our world from Beyond makes it onto a Vinegar Syndrome 4K UHD (and standard Blu-ray); hopefully you can finally see those subtle pink hues Stuart Gordon intended. Buy From Beyond.

Sex Is Crazy (1981): Surreal sex comedy about a stage show in which aliens make women give birth to 600 babies an hour; real aliens see the production and get ideas… Described as one of Jess Franco‘s wildest and weirdest movies (someone even suggest he approaches Buñuel here). Calvaire (2004) re-release: Read Pamela de Graff’s review. This torture horror about a shy singer trapped in a sadistic rural community is an odd choice for restoration and re-release, but here it is. In select rep theaters this week, coming to VOD next week (and likely Blu-ray soon). Calvaire‘s US distributor page.

FP 4EVZ (2023): In this late-arriving sequel to the 2011 original, a gang of post-apocalyptic “game rhythm warriors” fight to save their crumbling society from sobriety. How much 80s nostalgia camp can you stand? Playing a few theaters, but you’ll probably see it on VOD (buy or rent). FP 4EVZ official site.

Give Me Pity! (2022): A singer’s one-woman TV special spirals into a psychedelic nightmare. Listed as “in theaters” this week, which means a few Alamo Drafthouses around the country; VOD seems like a safer bet to catch it down the road. Give Me Pity! official site.

Linoleum (2022): A satellite crashes into an Ohio home and the dad decides to refashion the wreck into his own personal spaceship. An unlikely family-friendly weird movie starring the unlikely “clean comedian” Jim Gaffigan from unlikely distributor Shout! Studios; reports suggest it is indeed a strange film with a heartwarming, mindbending twist. Linoleum official site.

“Silent Avant-Garde”: Truth in advertising! Kino’s Blu-ray is collection of silent avant-garde films, mostly from the 1920s (with a few later examples of the form thrown in). Many of the entries here were previously mentioned in our review of “Masterworks of Avant-Garde Film 1920-1970,” including the cornerstone film here, “Ballet Mécanique.” Buy “Silent Avant-Garde”.
