Need your dose of surrealism for the week? This week’s short has masquerades, a diminished piano soundtrack, black lipstick, and, as promised, smoke. Extraordinary from start to finish, “Smoke” is seven minutes well spent.
A grocery bag, voiced by Werner Herzog, searches desperately for his “maker” after being thrown away. While grieving his loss, he begins to contemplate his meaning in life. This short was already mentioned as being an extra on the DVD of My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done, but we wanted to be sure you don’t overlook it.
Diego Maclean directs this striking animation for Billy Collins’ poem “The Art of Drowning”. The poem contemplates, or rather criticizes, the theory of one’s whole life manifesting itself the very second before one dies.
