We will schedule our December Weird Watch Party for Saturday, December 10 at 10:15 PM (unless someone requests an afternoon screening or alternate date instead, in which case, majority decides).
We’re not sure how we’ll approach Watch Parties in 2023. We may continue them as is, we may make them more casual, or we may try a completely different approach.
We can confidently stream movies from subscription sites Netflix (through the Teleparty app), Amazon Prime, or Hulu (we assume) for our watch parties. We can also stream Tubi content via Discord. Our first Discord experiment was mixed; the interface was far from optimal, but it did work.
If you’d like to attend our watch party, then the important thing is to RSVP in the comments, where you can make a screening suggestion, or just say you plan to be there. When making your nomination, simply comment with “I think we should watch Weird Movie on Netflix” or “How about Weird Movie 2: Electric Boogaloo on Prime?” You can also pitch in as to whether you prefer the afternoon or evening time slot, or a different day.
When the party is set to begin we’ll announce it in three places:

There There: Experimental film starring seven characters who are never seen together in the same shot. Andrew Bujalski (Computer Chess) appears inspired by the pandemic, Zoom calls and Tik-Toks; critical response was muted. There There official site.

Flaming Ears (1991): A crazy Austrian underground lesbian film from the early 90s set in the distant post-apocalyptic future (2700, to be exact). No idea why Kino Lorber suddenly decided to dust off (and restore) this would-be cult film that didn’t make much of a splash on its original release, but we’re glad they did: it is supremely weird (as the trailer will attest). Playing in LA and NYC this week, with future dates in Seattle and San Francisco. Flaming Ears official site.

This week we added a new theater to the repertory cinema list, Seattle’s The Beacon. We’re not sure how long this venue has been open but we just noticed it, and it’s masthead still reads “a new movie theater in Columbia City.” Their taste looks excellent, as they’re showing Weekend on Friday (today!); Roar on Saturday (11/19); The Cook the Thief His Wife & Her Lover on Wednesday (11/23); and they’re even screening Fantasy Mission Force (a movie we’ve never seen on a rep theater marquee before) a week from today (11/25). Let’s hope they’re a huge success!
Join us tomorrow (November 19) at 10:15 PM for a Weird Watch Party of Modus Operandi (2009). This will be our first attempt to stream a movie via Discord, so be sure you have an account. (You do not necessarily need to download the Discord app—you should be fine using the browser option.) There may be technical hiccups. Next week’s short Thanksgiving week will include Giles Edwards on the psychedelic rock musical Vide Noir (2022, based on Lord Huron’s 2018 album of the same name), while Gregory J. Earth Girls Are Easy (1988): Read Giles Edwards’ review. Would you believe that this very 80s Valley-Girl-meets-aliens comedy had never been issued on Blu-ray until just now? Yes, you would? Well, here it is anyway. Buy Earth Girls Are Easy.
Incredible but True [Incroyable mais Vrais] (2022): Read Giles Edwards’ festival review. A couple buys a house that allows them to time-travel 12 hours into the future… but this is a Quentin Dupieux comedy, so of course there’s a lot more to it than that. On Blu-ray, simultaneously debuting on VOD. Buy Incredible but True.
She Will (2021): Recovery from surgery, an aging film star (Alice Krige) visits a remote town in Scotland where the soil is thought to have healing powers thanks to the witches who were burned there centuries before. “Dario Argento presents” Charlotte Colbert’s directorial debut, which critics have described as quietly unsettling. Now on DVD or Blu-ray, or streaming on AMC+ or Shudder. Buy She Will.
Vide Noir (2022): Vernon’s search for his missing fiancée leads him to take a novel psychedelic drug in a neon-lit city. This release caught us by surprise, but fans of the band Lord Huron, whose 2018 album this movie is based on, have been eagerly awaiting it . VOD only. Buy or rent Vide Noir.

Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths: An award-winning director returns to his native Mexico, sparking a series of dreamlike reveries, etc. Alejandro González Iñárritu‘s obligatory 8 1/2 movie largely disappointed critics; he trimmed it down from 174 to a mere 152 minutes to make it easier to take. In theaters until December 16, when it heads to Netflix. Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths at Netflix.
Daisies (1966): Read the Canonically Weird entry! It’s finally here! The Criterion Collection 4K restoration of the anarchic Czech New Wave classic includes commentaries, talking heads interviews, and two rare short films from Vera Chytilová. Buy Daisies.
“Sharknado: The Complete Collection”: Read our review of Sharknado. Suckers for punishment will want to buy the entire six film output of Asylum’s Sharknado factory. Most people forgot about the briefly viral series the day after the first one premiered on the Syfy channel. Buy “Sharknado: The Complete Collection.”
Starship Troopers (1997): Read the reader-recommendation. Paul Verhoeven’s satire-ish sci-fi action film still divides viewers over whether its knowing camp, or just an entertainingly bad movie. Sony releases it in a 4K restoration on UHD in a collectible steelbook edition with hours of recycled extras plus a new 25th anniversary cast reunion. Buy Starship Troopers.

Terry Gilliam takes on the twisty-time-travel genre as Bruce Willis travels to the 90s to prevent a worldwide pandemic that ruins the future, and is immediately institutionalized.
