Our weekly look at what’s weird in theaters, on hot-off-the-presses DVDs and Blu-rays (and hot off the server VODs), and on more distant horizons…
Trailers of new release movies are generally available at the official site links.
NEW ON HOME VIDEO:
Adaptation. (2002): Read the Canonically Weird entry! A 4K UHD disc of the ultimate meta-narrative twist film. Buy Adaptation.
Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things (1972): Read S. Ryder’s review. Bob Clark‘s microbudget zombie movie, of all things, gets a 4K UHD release (with a standard Blu-ray included) and an entire disc of extra features for its 50th anniversary. Buy Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things.
Mad God (2021): Read the Apocryphally Weird entry! Phil Tippett‘s lifelong passion for depicting a stop-animated Hell gets the elaborate release it deserves, with tons of featurettes and two commentaries (one with special guest Guillermo del Toro). A Blu-ray/DVD combo in steelbook format, but if you want to save a few bucks, you can buy the standalone DVD in standard packaging separately. Buy Mad God.
“Shawscope: Volume 2”: Canonically Weird black magic/martial arts hybrid The Boxer’s Omen [Mo] (1983) highlights Arrow’s second restored Shaw Brothers kung-fu marathon Blu-ray box. Includes 13 other films, a huge number of extras, a big informative booklet, and two CDs of soundtrack music (with no Boxer’s Omen tracks). Pricey, but worth it. Buy “Shawscope: Volume 2.”
(Boxer’s Omen trailer starts about 16:22 and is NSFW)
CANONICALLY WEIRD (AND OTHER) REPERTORY SCREENINGS:
This section will no longer be updated regularly. Instead, we direct you to our new “Repertory Cinemas Near You” page. We will continue to mention exceptional events in this space from time to time, however.
FREE ONLINE WEIRD MOVIES ON YOUTUBE:
Kung Fu Hustle (2004): Read the Canonical entry. Stephen Chow‘s immensely entertaining kung fu comedy extravaganza is now free on YouTube (with the usual intrusive ads), likely for a limited time. Watch Kung Fu Hustle free with ads on YouTube.
WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE:
First up, a quick reminder, for anyone who hasn’t seen it, that the Kindle version of the 2022 Weird Movies Yearbook is out. Expect the physical print version to be finalized by next week.
In other news, tomorrow night at 10:15 PM ET we’ll have our Weird Watch Party of Relaxer (2018) on Amazon Prime (subscription or purchase required). Please join us. Link drops at 10 PM tomorrow.
In reviews next week, Giles Edwards looks at Netflix’s princely Robert Downey (Sr.) biopic Sr.; at a reader’s suggestion, Shane Wilson samples Fruit Chan’s tasty Dumplings (2004); and Gregory J. Smalley takes a deep breath as he prepares to tackle Alejandro González Iñárritu‘s 2.5 hour Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths, which debuts on Netflix next week. Onward and weirdward!
What are you looking forward to? If you have any weird movie leads that we have overlooked, feel free to leave them in the COMMENTS section.
I’m hoping to make it to tonight’s (12/10) watch party, but I may be stuck on the couch later.
