Pioneer isn’t quite as over-the-top as many of the shorts selected by Sundance, but this is actually a strength. The subtle weirdness is expertly done, which makes the story feel suspenseful and real.

A man with a camera approaches another and gets punched in the face. It gets satisfyingly creepy and disjointed from there.

SATURDAY SHORT: ONCE THERE WAS A KING (2011)
This Saturday we feature a striking stop-motion and CG adaptation of a Polish lullaby. Soothing as the singing is, there’s an eeriness that makes this short a poor choice to play for any child to make them fall asleep.
