This week we feature an excerpt from Nina Paley‘s latest film Seder-masochism, which is still in development. The tenth plague of Exodus has been depicted many times, but not quite like this. “The Duke of Uke and His Novelty Orchestra” supply the musical accompaniment.
Maybe I’m alone on this, but I find this extremely moving. I very much wish that I could be at the work in progress screening.
What an amazing short! I loved EVERYTHING about this: the animation style, the hieroglyphic figures, the colors, the pacing, the music, the Death’s Head narrator/vocalist, the whimsical combined with the sober acknowledgement of death. The returning of all of our parts to the earth, indeed, returns us to our origins, no one escapes this fate, and the cycle goes ever on. Strangely comforting and wonderfully mysterious – I look forward to more from Nina Paley!
