WEIRD HORIZON FOR THE WEEK OF 1/8/2021

366 Weird Movies may earn commissions from purchases made through product links.

Our weekly look at what’s weird in theaters, on hot-off-the-presses DVDs and Blu-rays (and hot off the server VODs), and on more distant horizons…

Trailers of new release movies are generally available at the official site links.

NEW ON HOME VIDEO:

“30 Coins” (2020): A disgraced exorcist investigates weird happenings—like a cow that gives birth to a human child—in a remote Spanish town. An eight-episode limited series from none other than Spanish madman . Streaming exclusively on HBO. “30 Coins” HBO page.

Ingagi (1930): A real curiosity: an implicitly-racist mondo-style documentary hoax from the silent film era, including notorious staged bit about a mythical African tribe who worships (and sacrifices women to) a gorilla. Inagagi was a legendary oddity that had never before been released on home video; Kino, in collaboration with Something Weird, restores the film and puts it out on Blu-ray. Buy Ingagi.

“Three Films by Luis Buñuel”: The three films in questions are all canonically weird entries you should be interested in: The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972), The Phantom of Liberty (1974), and That Obscure Object of Desire (1977). All films are newly remastered, although all the bonus content (other than the booklet) looks recycled from past individual releases. From the Criterion Collection, on Blu-ray only. Buy “Three Films by Luis Buñuel”.

ONLINE EVENTS (Thursday, Nov. 8, Zoom):

“Seminar: Blue Velvet”: This free online seminar consists of two parts: a pre-recorded lecture on ‘s psychosexual thriller Blue Velvet (1986) from film critic Beatrice Loayza, followed by a live Q&A with her via Zoom at 8 PM ET on Nov 8. You are left on your own to find and watch the movie. Sponsored by Coolidge Corner Theater in Boston. Register for free online Blue Velvet seminar.

CANONICALLY WEIRD (AND OTHER) REPERTORY SCREENINGS:

Once again, due to Covid closures there is nothing to report in this section. (There was a single notable screening, but it was scheduled too early on Friday for us to promote it this week.) Perhaps next week things will improve, but we would expect it will take weeks or months to approach anything near normal.

WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE:

Please join us tomorrow, Jan 9, at 10:15 PM ET on Netflix for our screening of and chat regarding Errementari: The Blacksmith and the Devil (2017). Who knows what this movie is about? We’ll find out together. As always, the link will appear here, on our Facebook page, and our Twitter page about 15 minutes before showtime.

In reviews, next week we’ll spend some time vainly trying to whittle down the reader-suggestion queue as Giles Edwards tackles ‘s politically incorrect animated race comedy Coonskin (1974), while covers 1994’s Tammy and the T-Rex (now available in the R-rated gore cut!) Onward and weirdward!

What are you looking forward to? If you have any weird movie leads that we have overlooked, feel free to leave them in the COMMENTS section.

WEIRD HORIZON FOR THE WEEK OF 1/1/2021

366 Weird Movies may earn commissions from purchases made through product links.

Our weekly look at what’s weird in theaters, on hot-off-the-presses DVDs and Blu-rays (and hot off the server VODs), and on more distant horizons…

Trailers of new release movies are generally available at the official site links.

It’s off-season for the movies. The industry tends to go into hibernation after the holidays, awakening to start a new season with the Sundance Festival. Things seem even bleaker than usual with so many theaters shuttered right now. But keep checking in, things will improve.

IN DEVELOPMENT (FILMING):

Incroyable mais vrais [Incredible but True] (est 2021): Little is known about ‘s 10th feature film except that it reunites him with lead , it is currently filming, and it is listed as a comedy despite a tagline stating it’s about a couple whose real estate agent warns them about something in the basement of the dream home they are buying. It’s impossible to imagine Dupieux making a non-weird film, so we’ll be on the lookout for this one. Cineuropa has an article in English referencing the project.

NEW ON HOME VIDEO:

The One You Feed (2020): A nameless man finds himself being cared for in a nameless country by a nameless man and woman. Ambiguous and homoerotic. DVD, Blu-ray or VOD. Buy The One You Feed.

CANONICALLY WEIRD (AND OTHER) REPERTORY SCREENINGS:

There are no live weird movie screenings in the USA or Canada this week. The post-holidays period is always slow, however, so we look for this section to slowly recover through 2021 and be back to full strength a year from now.

FREE MOVIES ON TUBI.TV:

Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010): Read the Canonically Weird review! What the hell is going on at the Arboria Institute, and why are they playing all that Tangerine Dream-style music? Listed as “leaving soon.” Watch Beyond the Black Rainbow free on Tubi.tv.

WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE: New movie releases may have slowed down, but that doesn’t mean we here at 366 Weird Movies will! Next week Giles Edwards feels The Hunger (1983) for a / vampire snack. And there is no need to be coy about the fact that The Wolf House, our Weirdest Movie of 2020, will be joining the Apocrypha; next week, we’ll make it official with a write-up.

And Happy 2021 to you! May this year clear the very low hurdle that is being an improvement over 2020. Onward and weirdward!

What are you looking forward to? If you have any weird movie leads that we have overlooked, feel free to leave them in the COMMENTS section.

JANUARY 9 NETFLIX PARTY POLL

Here’s the poll to vote in January’s Netflix Weird Watch Party, which will start on Jan. 9 at 10:15 PM ET. If you plan on virtually attending, please vote for the movie we’ll be watching below. We’ll screen the movie that get the most votes; your host, Gregory J. Smalley, will personally break any ties. Note that unlike our other polls, you can only vote once. Poll closes at midnight ET on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2020. You may vote for multiple movies, but not for every movie (because that would be pointless).

Now vote!

JANUARY WEIRD NETFLIX PARTY NOMINATIONS THREAD

We’re currently sticking to our plan of one Netflix and one Amazon Prime watch party per month. It’s Netflix’s turn.

We’re open to suggestions for different starting times, dates, or methods of propagating the watch link.

Our next Netflix Party will be scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 9 at 10:15 PM. We’ll take nominations for movies to screen in the comments on this post up until next Sunday (Jan. 3), then put up a voting poll.

The Canonically Weird movies on Netflix that we haven’t yet screened yet are A Clockwork Orange (1971),Kung Fu Hustle (2004),  Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion (1997), Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010), A Serious Man (2009), and Swiss Army Man (2016). Feel free to nominate any of these, or ignore them in favor of other selections. Since we’ve rolled over into a new year, we could technically decide to watch something we’ve seen before (if it’s still on the platform). For reference, the movies we’ve already screened are The Platform, April and the Extraordinary World, The Bad Batch, Skins [Pieles], Under the Skin, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Enemy, A Ghost Story, Escape from the ‘Liberty’ Cinema, Between Worlds, Buster’s Mal Heart, The Aerial [La Antena], The Endless, The Wicker Man (1973),  Murder Party (2007), I Lost My Body (2019), I’m Thinking of Ending Things (2020), We Have Always Lived in the Castle (2018), Cadaver (2020), and Being John Malkovich (1999).

Here’s a list of stuff arriving and leaving Netflix in January.

To participate, you’ll need a U.S. Netflix account, a Chrome-based browser, and the Netflix Party (now TeleParty) extension.

Make your nominations in the comments below.

WEIRD PRIME DECEMBER WATCH PARTY, “THE BABY OF MACON,” STARTS IN 15 MINUTES

This month’s Amazon Prime Watch Party—The Baby of Mâcon (1993)—starts in just over fifteen minutes.

You’ll need to be an Amazon Prime member in the US to participate.

There will be no pausing or rewinding except for technical reasons.

We are offering no technical support, so help each other out if needed.
