Our weekly look at what’s weird in theaters, on hot-off-the-presses DVDs and Blu-rays (and hot off the server VODs), and on more distant horizons…
Trailers of new release movies are generally available at the official site links.
It’s off-season for the movies. The industry tends to go into hibernation after the holidays, awakening to start a new season with the Sundance Festival. Things seem even bleaker than usual with so many theaters shuttered right now. But keep checking in, things will improve.
IN DEVELOPMENT (FILMING):
Incroyable mais vrais [Incredible but True] (est 2021): Little is known about Quentin Dupieux‘s 10th feature film except that it reunites him with lead Alain Chabat, it is currently filming, and it is listed as a comedy despite a tagline stating it’s about a couple whose real estate agent warns them about something in the basement of the dream home they are buying. It’s impossible to imagine Dupieux making a non-weird film, so we’ll be on the lookout for this one. Cineuropa has an article in English referencing the project.
NEW ON HOME VIDEO:
The One You Feed (2020): A nameless man finds himself being cared for in a nameless country by a nameless man and woman. Ambiguous and homoerotic. DVD, Blu-ray or VOD. Buy The One You Feed.
CANONICALLY WEIRD (AND OTHER) REPERTORY SCREENINGS:
There are no live weird movie screenings in the USA or Canada this week. The post-holidays period is always slow, however, so we look for this section to slowly recover through 2021 and be back to full strength a year from now.
FREE MOVIES ON TUBI.TV:
Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010): Read the Canonically Weird review! What the hell is going on at the Arboria Institute, and why are they playing all that Tangerine Dream-style music? Listed as “leaving soon.” Watch Beyond the Black Rainbow free on Tubi.tv.
WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE: New movie releases may have slowed down, but that doesn’t mean we here at 366 Weird Movies will! Next week Giles Edwards feels The Hunger (1983) for a Catherine Deneuve/David Bowie vampire snack. And there is no need to be coy about the fact that The Wolf House, our Weirdest Movie of 2020, will be joining the Apocrypha; next week, we’ll make it official with a write-up.
And Happy 2021 to you! May this year clear the very low hurdle that is being an improvement over 2020. Onward and weirdward!
What are you looking forward to? If you have any weird movie leads that we have overlooked, feel free to leave them in the COMMENTS section.
