WEIRD HORIZON FOR THE WEEK OF 2/18/2022

366 Weird Movies may earn commissions from purchases made through product links.

Our weekly look at what’s weird in theaters, on hot-off-the-presses DVDs and Blu-rays (and hot off the server VODs), and on more distant horizons…

Trailers of new release movies are generally available at the official site links.

IN THEATERS (LIMITED RELEASE):

King Knight (2021): A witch goes on a trippy walkabout after secrets from his past are revealed. A New Age satire from In theaters and simultaneously on video-on-demand. No official site located.

Strawberry Mansion (2021): Read our festival review. This Gondryesque dream flick was one of our weird favorites from last year’s Fantasia Fest; it’s in theaters on a limited basis this week, with VOD coming next week. Strawberry Mansion official site.

NEW ON HOME VIDEO:

Mogul Mowgli (2020): On the cusp of a career breakthrough, a Pakistani rapper (Riz Ahmed) is diagnosed with a degenerative disease, and spirals into a series of flashbacks and hallucinations. Strand releases this “surreal drama” from first time director Bassam Tariq on DVD, Blu-ray or VOD. Buy Mogul Mowgli.

Versus (2000): Read our review. This new release of the yazkuza/zombie mashup is a one-disc edition of Arrow’s 2020 doiuble-disc special edition, lacking only the longer “Ultimate” cut of the movie. Buy Versus.

CANONICALLY WEIRD (AND OTHER) REPERTORY SCREENINGS:

This section will no longer be updated regularly. Instead, we direct you to our new “Repertory Cinemas Near You” page. We will continue to mention exceptional events in this space from time to time, however.

WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE:

We’re still looking for RSVPs and suggestions for our Feb. 26 Weird Watch Party—join the discussion here.

We’re also in the middle of a round of Apocrypha Promotion voting (if you haven’t cast a ballot yet) and of determining the winners of the 2021 Weirdcademy Awards (if you haven’t cast your daily ballot yet). It’s a very interactive period of the 366 season!

Next week, Rafael Moreira returns with a second look at ‘s erotic drama A Snake of June (2002), while Shane Wilson survives the post-apocalytpic flop Slipstream (1989) and Gregory J. Smalley catches The Stendahl Syndrome (1996). And we’re expecting to throw a surprise interview in there, too—but it’s not recorded yet, so you’ll have to wait and see. Onward and weirdward!

What are you looking forward to? If you have any weird movie leads that we have overlooked, feel free to leave them in the COMMENTS section.
