Suggest a Weird Movie!

Please do not ask “what was that movie?” questions on this page. We set up an entire site here to answer those questions. This page is for suggesting movies to be reviewed.

Know a weird movie? Something strange that glued you to the screen with awe, amazement or reverence, while your more mundane minded friends left the room (or theater) in boredom, confusion or disgust? A movie whose omission from a list of the 366 weirdest movies of all time would offend you on a personal level? Something even I haven’t heard of or considered? There are potentially thousands of forgotten films, critically dismissed films, foreign or independent films that never got a proper release, or misplaced oddities hiding out there that may deserve a place at the table. One man can’t be expected to track them all down. Here is the place to mention those treasured curios that no one else seems to have even heard of. Nominate a movie in the suggestion box and I’ll move it up on my review queue, or at the very least, explain why I’m not going to review it.

NOTICE: The “Suggest of Weird Movie!” feature has become a victim of its own success.  At the time of this update, we have about 250 reader suggestions (!) in queue. (More than that since I last updated the page)! Since we can only do 1 or maybe 2 reviews a week, be aware there may be a huge delay—currently, possibly over a year!—between the time you make a suggestion and the point at which it’s actually reviewed.  I considered shutting down the suggestion box as of 2011, but I decided to let you keep your suggestions coming (if nothing else, it tells us what types of movies readers are interested in seeing reviews of). Just be aware that when you make a suggestion, it may not receive the promptest of attention. The best you can really hope for at this point is to bring something to our attention that we might have overlooked. (Also note that although we prioritize the earliest nominations later suggestions may get reviewed before earlier ones if they receive a re-release on DVD or Blu-ray, or interest us for our own inscrutable reasons).

If you can’t wait for one of our staff to review your movie, why not review it yourself and submit it to us via the contact form?  We can’t swear we’ll publish every submission we receive, but we want reader participation and we are fairly liberal.

All serious suggestions will receive a response, as well as all most non-serious ones.

  1. Here’s the review queue of reader suggestions that have yet to be reviewed, in alphabetical order. You can always see this list ordered according to intended order of publication in the weekly “What’s in the Pipeline” column (published on Sundays).

Be aware that, given the number of titles here, there will be a (long and ever-growing ) delay between suggesting a title and its eventual review.

    1. May I suggest Jan Svankmajer’s “Surviving Life (Theory And Practice” to the list. Besides the very explicit incestual tones throughout the film, I think the dream sequences of chicken headed naked women warrants this a place on the list.
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auUXVqRaqVM
There’s the English trailer, after viewing it I’m sure you’ll consider it for the list. I believe the entire thing has been uploaded to youtube by the Art channel, so viewing it should be easy enough!

  2. in movie 101 i think that it is the city of angels or somerhikg like that with nic. cage not sure though

  3. The Cook, The Thief, His wife, and her Lover. The director started as a painter, movie has an obsession with both the disgusting and lavish.

  4. I just saw the Lithuanian film Vanishing Waves. Some very good moments of dream-like weirdness.

  5. A friend of mines asked me thus and I’m stumped. Don’t know when or what year she viewed it but got me interested.
What is the movie where the wife always forgets what her husband looks like so he always looks like a stranger to her? She uses the color of his tie to recognize him.

  6. Cinema Sewer has just release a movie called RETARD-O-TRON III, a “demented but fun hell-ride through that bad neighborhood of video, TV, porn, home videos, cinema, and found footage.” I’m the creator for that movie. If you’d like a copy, let me know. There’s a teaser/trailer on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpikWf6vo9M

It definitely fits your criteria at the top of this page!

  7. check out cat soup (2001), directed by Tatsuo Sato. I’m not a big fan of animation but this was a pretty crazy movie and one of the few animated movies I’ve seen that is really justified in being animated.

  8. Yes, I think so — it’s… a special kind of movie. Drop me an email if you’d like to give the screener a shot.

  9. I would définitly add the movie “Arizona dream” from Emir kusturicha. Althought “black cat white cat” is an excellent movie, it has not the weirdnessess (?) I think you are looking for.

  10. how about Fear X? most people i know didn’t like it. i completely disagree. i tried searching for it, but could not find that it had been reviewed.

  11. I remember this wired movie from I was little and its probably from 1998-2003 maybe and it’s about a zombie-vampire movie. It’s about these college students who go to this house in the summer time and one of the guys rip off a special necklace from a dead body in the cemetery of the yard in front of then and it awakens all of the zombies and they have to fight back HELP! ASAP

  12. As best as I can remember, I saw this movie in or around 1984-ish. I believe it was on HBO around the same time as Body Double. The plot concerned digitally scanning and copying the 3D images of actors to use as computer animated actors in movies. A newscaster discovers that some of the actors have been murdered, and nobody knows about it because their virtual images are still “acting” on TV. The newscaster is intended to become the next victim, and the murderer shows him his own virtual image before he tries to kill him too. The final scene takes place in a studio (probably the news studio) where the murderer attempts the kill the newscaster. What is the name of this movie?

  13. Motyka: Oops, I missed that suggestion. Yes, We Are the Strange would be an appropriate review.

Randy Richards: You meant to ask that on the What Was That Weird Movie? page.

hanul: Sure, we can try out Confessions.

Tamori: Ah, Monday. It was suggested very early on (page 2 of this thread) but I could not find a subtitled Region 1 release of the movie and so I passed on reviewing it, promising to remember it later. But, I forgot about it until now. I will put it in the queue with a “depending on availability” note so I won’t lose track of it again.

  14. The Slit aka United Trash:

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118045/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

A gay UN general (Udo Kier) is sent to a mission in Africa, where his wife gives birth to a black baby with sperm-squirting slit in his forehead who is hailed as a new messiah. Also including an ex-nazi scientist who builds V2 rockets fueled by humans, a perverted priest who wants to destroy Vatican, sex, gore, etc.

Directed by controversial German artist Christoph Schlingensief, I suspect that any of his other films could be on the list too.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christoph_Schlingensief

  15. sebastian: I will pass on Heritage of Cain because there is no English translation on that upload (and I prefer not to watch movies on YouTube if I can find a better way to see them). I will instead provisionally place Vigasiosexploitation in the queue (hoping there are English subtitles). We linked to the free download of it several years ago and it appears it is still available from your site for free.

JT: The Slit/United Trash sounds like a good review candidtae, although I fear there may be trouble finding that one with an English translation as well. At any rate we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.

  16. Am I really the first one to propose THX 1138 ???
Sure, there are way weirder movies on the market, but still, it has its few headscratching moments…

    1. Dwarf Oscar, I believe you are… although some people like to propose 10 or 20 movies at a time and I only pick one for the queue, so someone could have mentioned it 20 pages ago. Anyway, I’ll add THX 1138.

  17. Tasher Desh (The Land of Cards) released this year. It’s a trippy version of Rabindrath Tagore’s namesake play. The trailer looks good, with people in military uniform dining together, blabbering and sometimes firing their guns without reason. Looks very Beckett-like, with themes of dystopia, absurdity of human actions etc. Would love to watch it soon 🙂

  18. I was watching Paranorman with my family the other day and remembered faintly, a movie where there were zombies, and like a normal zombie flick the townspeople didnt like them, ya da ya da ya da…Anyway, I remember at the end a little girl walks up to a zombie, asks “grandpa”? (or grandma) and the zombie picks her up and everybody realizes theyre nice and stuff and everybody’s happy. Any ideas? I am giving myself a headache.

  19. Ok, I believe I saw this movie in the late 80s/early 90s. It was about a teenage girl who woke up in the future by colliding with another girl. She discovers her family had died in a fire many years before. Her new friend has to teach her how to live in modern society, for instance how to use toilet paper and eat pizza. In the end, she returns to her time. Does anyone know what this movie is called???

  20. As a punishment for reviewing “Retard-O-Tron III” because its director told you to, even though you think it’s a nasty, cynical, evil movie which doesn’t deserve the publicity you just gave it without even being bribed (unless a free copy of a film you’ll never watch again and wish you hadn’t watched at all counts as a bribe), I’m going to nominate “Captan Eager and the Mark of Voth” for you to sit through and then write an essay on, whether you want to or not.

It’s weird all right, but it’s also incredibly tedious, largely incomprehensible, and will almost certainly bore you to tears for an hour and half, since it seems to have that effect on most viewers. Still, at least it doesn’t try to raise laughs by sniggering at found footage of real mentally disabled people, and nobody vomits on anybody else’s face. So there’s that.

    1. You are incorrigible, Otto. I’m going to pass on that film because I know you don’t really mean this recommendation (thanks for tipping me off on that rather than trying to trick me). Your general rhetorical point that we should be more selective about we agree to review has merit, though, and it’s under advisement.

  21. WHAT WAS THAT 1990S AMERICAN KIDS MOVIE (this is all i remember) about a teenage boy in late teens or early twenties that gets kicked out or runs away from his trailer home from his dirty looking mum and maybe step dad?! He then meets this old man then the old guy who uses a metal detector to find some thing that reminded me of christopher lloyde from back to the future. They get in a car and then end up having a car crash and the airbags explodes. The young guy then goes to this casino place and falls in love with this red head who’s boyfriend/partner is in the mafia or a gang of some sort so he gets in trouble with them and then all I remember is the young guy going down the escalator of the casino and then looking back at the red headed woman who he can’t be with but THEN im pretty sure she goes running after him!
sorry thats all i remember I hope someone can help me!!!! is been bugging me for years

  22. I am looking for the title of a movie about the legend of the sea witch.

This movie might have been released in the eighties (maybe). This film is a B rated T&A movie. Basically the sea witch had become very powerful by killing any MAN who opposed her. This was done by seducing them and while in the throes of sex while she was on top she would dismember them. Then she was defeated and sent to an underwater prison of a sort. Hundreds of years later a young woman was interested in the legend and had found the underwater prison/temple. As she sinks into a darkened area it looks like a bed. She is tethered there by silken scarves to the four posts then you see under a silky sheet the sea witch (which is an eel- I think) slide into her. After she becomes the new sea witch she walks out of the water nude.

Anyway I had described the movie to a friend and he wants to know the title-which I have no clue. If anyone has seen it please let me know, thanks!

    1. After looking at the certified and queued listings I also have these to offer;

      Bug
      Devil’s Rejects
Hostel/ Hostel 2 (I feel is better) These may not be weird enough just gruesome.

  23. “The Spirit”: though I wouldn’t call that piece of cinema a good movie, I have to admit – it’s certainly unusual. Frank Miller decided to adapt Will Eisner classic comic as a bizarre mix of noir, slapstick, supernatural mumbo-jumbo, and, well, borderline-misogyny. The effect, although flawed, is undoubtably weird and deserves a place on the List.

  24. Hi sunspotbaby,

I think I am going to pass on those suggestions. There are several movies called Bug; if you mean this one, we already considered it (somewhat weird movie, and good, but not strong enough to make the List). I don’t think The Devil’s Rejects is quite weird enough (we rejected House of 1000 Corpses, which is quite a bit weirder—though sometimes I wonder if I wasn’t too quick to dismiss it). Finally, I have the sense that you’re right that the Hostel movies are more gruesome than weird.

On the other hand, I can take a flyer on Motyka’s The Spirit, which is something I thought looked weird (though likely bad as well).

  25. Hey can you help me find a movie…
Well its about this guy who is fighting with his wife then stands up from the table & goes to the room & gets a shotgun & shoots her in the head & shoots his 2 sons but when he see’s his daughter he doesn’t shoot her .
So there escaping from the police. At the end the little girl gets run over by a car. But everything was a vision it was all in his head .
Hope that’s enough info I’ve tried everything but I just cant find
Can you Pleas Help Me ?
I really wanna what that movie is called ..

  26. cookie monster, you’ll get a better response if you try asking that question in the What Was That Weird Movie? thread.

Jason (see above, right below the queue itself) suggests Jan Svankmajer’s Surviving Life: Theory and Practice. No problem; we’ve really just been waiting for its Region 1 debut to review it. But I’ll add it to the queue to show we haven’t forgotten about it.

  27. Galaxy of Terror (1981)
aka Mindwarp: An Infinity of Terror

    Why this movie?
    1) death of Taaffe O’Connell’s curvy character by giant maggot-rape
    2) Richie Cunningham’s little sister (Erin Gray) sliced and diced
    3) cult favorite Sid Haig’s mute warrior attacked by his own weapons
    4) Grace Zabriskie of the silver-blaze-through-her-tresses
    5) “blue” director Zalman King
    6) EDWARD ALBERT!

    AND: IMDb review excerpt:
It’s a fun diversion for fans of these types of films and can be recommended for many reasons. You get to see Robert Englund before he donned the glove, Ray Walston after he was everybody’s favorite Martian and Erin Moran after her years as Joanie. You also get to see some early effects work by James Cameron.

This is sci fi/horror in the same vein as “Event Horizon”, just very low-budget. How cheap? The walls of the spaceship were made out of McDonald’s takeout cartons!

  28. I hope none of these are repeats:
The Adventures of Prince Achmed aka Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed (1926)

Demon Planet aka Planet of Blood (1965)
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059792/?ref_=fn_tt_tt_4
This is notable for providing a lot of inspiration for “Alien”~beyond “It! The Terror from Beyond Space”. A signal draws two spaceships to a fog-shrouded planet. Especially of note is the crashed gargantuan craft with the remains of a far-earlier “space jockey”.

The Trip (1967) ~ This one likely has been suggested. Just in case…

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0481797/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

  30. Please tell me if I need to wait to suggest more later. I truly won’t mind. And, I hope I’m suggesting a good share that weren’t mentioned before.

Incubus (1966) ~ cast speaks Esperanto
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059311/?ref_=fn_al_tt_4
TRIVIA: Just one year after this film came out, as its prints were being destroyed, William Shatner was cast in “Star Trek”, cinematographer Conrad L. Hall got his first Academy Award nomination, actor Milos Milos murdered the estranged wife of Mickey Rooney then killed himself, and actress Ann Atmar committed suicide. According to Shatner, a hippie-type fellow who approached the cast and crew responded to the hostility from some of them with a curse!

    Blood Freak (1972)
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0132888/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
    From IMDb review:
    The finest example of the pro-Christian / anti-drug / gore / turkey-headed-monster sub genre

    Poor Pretty Eddie (1975)
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070556/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
From IMDb review: Flush with heterodox characters and nightmarish imagery, … a mind-bending, jaw-dropping, head-scratching freak-on-wheels which is equal parts effective and defective. 6.5/10…file under “uncategorizable”.

Sonny Boy (1989) ~ Pssssst! David Carradine in drag

  31. I’ve read through the main list and the candidates and was relieved to see only a few repeats that are on my lists. That gives me courage to continue suggestions as I review my film journals.

Journey to the Seventh Planet (1962)
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056127/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
This is farther out than “Queen of Outer Space” (1958)!

Did I miss this on the lists? It certainly should be suggested. I did mention it in connection with “Roman”.

  32. @MystMoonstruck – you do realize, don’t you, that this site basically depends on one guy eventually getting around to watching every movie ever suggested by anyone if he has to agree that it’s “weird” and then writing an essay about it, whether he likes it or not? I’m not sure about the exact rules – most of them are unwritten – but there seems to be a sort of Dice Man thing going on here. My point is that you have just nominated 47 films in 2 days and apparently you aren’t finished yet! You’re basically asking the poor bloke to write a book for you!

With all due respect, might I suggest that it’s not remotely realistic to nominate this number of films to this site all at once? Quality, not quantity! And if you’re truly passionate about weird movies – you certainly seem to have seen a great many of them – perhaps you might consider becoming a contributor? Your reviews won’t count as official list entries, but they’ll appear as “capsules”, and after you’ve had more than one of them accepted, you’ll be on that list of contributors over there on the right, which is undoubtedly a great honor. You’ll be drawing attention to the films you love without contributing to somebody else’s already massive in-tray. It’s a thought. How about it?

    1. No, I honestly did not know that just one person does this! I figured it definitely was a group effort because it’s so beautifully designed and arranged. I wouldn’t have gone overboard otherwise. Also, I didn’t know there was a rule that only one could be suggested. I tried to do a lot of reading but didn’t see that rule. I’m definitely not a rulebreaker~not intentionally.

I’m very sorry that I got carried away. I’m relieved that I received two responses so that I know to call a halt to titles. Thank you for being nice about it.

Actually, these weren’t selected at random and ARE quality; I have watched them numerous times, several as many as 75-100 times. So, I didn’t just toss them together without serious thought. I AM a fan of these films. I guess I didn’t realize that they might be unviewed. It did surprise me to see, on the suggestion list above, so many mainstream movies that I wouldn’t think of as strange though many of them certainly fit in the category.

So, I’ll see if I can try writing a review, as I’ve never done that before. It’s going to be tricky to select just one!

Again, thank you for your time.

    2. You are right that not just one person does this, in terms of writing and providing content. As owner/editor, I do, however, personally approve every movie that goes on the List, although another person may write it up.

  33. Wait, Blind Beast is not in the queue? I second that recommendation then. More Japanese New Wave is never a bad thing (I think Branded to Kill is the only Japanese New Wave film to be reviewed so far?) and there should be a region 1 release for Blind Beast, I think.

That is a lot of recommendations you posted by the way 🙂 A few of them are already on the list (e.g. I recognize Dogtooth and Performance) and I’m sure a few more are in the queue (e.g. The Fountain I think is there) but I think most of them are new recommendations.

  34. Great (and meaty) list, Myst. The ones we have already covered are Performance and Dogtooth (both made the List); The Apple (a list candidate); The Baby, The Iron Rose, Poor Pretty Eddie, May, and The Big Bang (we passed these over).

The rule is that we only take one suggestion from a person per post, so I will put your very first suggestion, Galaxy of Terror, in the queue, while hinting that several other movies from those lists are also on our radar. You can come back later after someone else has posted and suggest another, but one official suggestion at a time will be considered to add to the review queue.

Since Dreamer seconded Blind Beast I’ll add that as well. (Yes, a bit surprised that one hadn’t been suggested yet myself).

As Otto points out there’s no way I’m watching all those movies on top of the ones already in queue, but even if I can’t get around to everything the suggestion box does give me information on what people are interested in seeing covered, and sometimes I learn about movies I hadn’t heard of before. So people are encouraged to submit whatever they want, so long as they don’t think we’ll be getting to it next week (or month, or year—though you never know, as we often do these movies out-of-order for various reasons).

But writing your own reader review is a great suggestion—I wish more people would take advantage of that feature!

    1. I’m sorry for inundating you with movie titles. I will wait a very long time before suggesting other films. I suppose I miscalculate what people have seen, as I was worrying about some of these being too mainstream. I thought most of these films had been seen since I recognize all of the movies named at the site though some I’ve only read about but hope to see.

You will do yourself a favor if you delay watching “Youth Without Youth”, as it’s an oddball film but not all that entertaining.

I must admit that, although I’ve been a film buff practically all of my life, I’ve never written a movie review. I have only made casual commentaries at Q&A places. I could try writing one, but I’m afraid my ramblings might look downright silly next to some of the writers at this site.

Again, I’m sorry my enthusiasm got away from me. There are so many great (sometimes crazy) movies that came to mind.

Oops! I almost referenced a couple of them!

Thank you for your patience with me. I might be getting to be an lady, but my love of the cinema remains boundless.

    2. Uh oh! That should be OLD lady, as I’ve passed the six-decade mark.

I’ll start a list for future suggestions, if I’m still alive by the time you get through your suggestion list, which definitely has many goodies!
