Discussed in this episode:
The Beast in Space (1980): Hard-to-believe softcore sci-fi sequel-in- name-only to Walerian Borowczyk‘s Canonically Weird The Beast [La Bête] (1975). Makes you wonder about other potential unmade exploitation sequels to surrealist films: Suspiria in Space, Dr. Phibes on Spring Break, Eraserhead in da Hood? Buy The Beast in Space.
The Bliss of Mrs. Blossom (1968): A bar magnate’s wife keeps a lover trapped in her attic. A mildly psychedelic, modest-but-wacky sex comedy from the Swinging Sixties starring Shirley MacLaine, with a bit part by John Cleese. On DVD, Blu-ray, or VOD from KL Studio Classics. Buy (or rent) The Bliss of Mrs. Blossom.
B’Twixt Now and Sunrise (The Authentic Cut) (2011/2022): Read El Rob Hubbard’s review of the original Twixt. It seems Francis Ford Coppola paused work on Megalopolis for a bit to recut his 2011 horror flop; it will be interesting to see how this effects the final product. Blu-ray only (at the moment). Buy B’Twixt Now and Sunrise (The Authentic Cut).
From Beyond (1986): Read Gregory J. Smalley’s review. The 80s Lovecraftian horror about creatures coming into our world from Beyond makes it onto a Vinegar Syndrome 4K UHD (and standard Blu-ray); hopefully you can finally see those subtle pink hues Stuart Gordon intended. Buy From Beyond.
Sex Is Crazy (1981): Surreal sex comedy about a stage show in which aliens make women give birth to 600 babies an hour; real aliens see the production and get ideas… Described as one of Jess Franco‘s wildest and weirdest movies (someone even suggest he approaches Buñuel here). Blu-ray only from Severin. Buy Sex Is Crazy.
WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE:
If you haven’t done so already, this is your last week to vote in the 2023 Weirdcademy Awards (features here, shorts here). Polls close at noon Eastern Time on March 11.
In next week’s print reviews, Shane Wilson descends into the reader-suggested reader queue and finds The Cement Garden (1993) and jumps straight into the fourth (really?) installment of Jason Trost‘s dystopian dance comedy, FP 4EVZ (2023).
Also, we will be hosting more Weird Watch Parties this week! You can see the schedule in the sidebar, but we’ll reiterate here:
Monday, Mar 6 at 10:00 PM ET (it’s short): Forbidden Zone (1982) (colorized) on Tubi via Discord (free)
Tuesday, Mar 7 (time TBA, but tentatively 8 PM): Why Don’t You Play in Hell? (2013) on Tubi via Discord (free)
Onward and weirdward!
This is a great episode; I appreciated the extensive Lovecraft coverage – I’m a fan, but I haven’t seen From Beyond and now I want to.
I’ll also add that I appreciate this site for evaluating movies solely on their weird cred, and their own merits (or lack thereof). It’s refreshing to see reviews where “weird” is not used as a derogatory term.
A24 is rereleasing Darren Arnofsky’s Pi into theaters
Yes they are! Around 3/14 for some reason.
And if you still do the “set your dvr” thing TCM is airing The 5000 Fingers of Dr T tomorrow
