WEIRD HORIZON FOR THE WEEK OF 5/6/2022

366 Weird Movies may earn commissions from purchases made through product links.

Our weekly look at what’s weird in theaters, on hot-off-the-presses DVDs and Blu-rays (and hot off the server VODs), and on more distant horizons…

Trailers of new release movies are generally available at the official site links.

IN THEATERS (LIMITED RELEASE):

Lux Aeterna: and are two actresses in a witch trial movie, and everything goes wrong in a psychedelic way typical of director . Epileptics beware the trippy stroboscopic effects! Only 50 minutes long, and in very limited U.S. distribution. Lux Aeterna official site (in French).

BOOKS:

“Liarmouth: A Feel-Bad Romance”: writes his first novel at 76, and it’s a callback to his early days, like a Trash Trilogy sequel in prose. It’s the story of suitcase thief Marsha Sprinkle, and apparently there are talking genitals in it, among other demented scenes. Reviews have been generally positive, though coming with a warning that it’s not for those with weak stomachs.  Buy “Liarmouth: A Feel-Bad Romance.”

CANONICALLY WEIRD (AND OTHER) REPERTORY SCREENINGS:

This section will no longer be updated regularly. Instead, we direct you to our new “Repertory Cinemas Near You” page. We will continue to mention exceptional events in this space from time to time, however. Like this one:

FREE ONLINE WEIRD MOVIES:

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010): Read the Canonical entry! Watch nerdy gamer bassist Scott defeat would-be girlfriend Ramona’s seven evil exes in this modern cult film, now free on Tubi. Watch Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010) free on Tubi.

WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE:

Join us late tomorrow—10:15 PM on the U.S. east coast—for Damon Packard‘s sure-to-be-weird take on an action thriller, Fatal Pulse (2018).  No subscription required, but a free Kast.tv account is necessary to stream and chat. As always, the link to join will drop here, on Facebook, and on Twitter around 10 PM.

In reviews next week, Shane Wilson examines The Other Side of the Wind, the posthumous reconstruction of an unfinished Orson Welles project completed in 2013. Then, Gregory J. Smalley enters The Warped Forest (2011), ‘s seldom-seen spiritual sequel to Funky Forest: The First Contact (2005). Onward and weirdward!

What are you looking forward to? If you have any weird movie leads that we have overlooked, feel free to leave them in the COMMENTS section.

WEIRD HORIZON FOR THE WEEK OF 4/30/2022

366 Weird Movies may earn commissions from purchases made through product links.

Our weekly look at what’s weird in theaters, on hot-off-the-presses DVDs and Blu-rays (and hot off the server VODs), and on more distant horizons…

Trailers of new release movies are generally available at the official site links.

IN THEATERS (LIMITED RELEASE):

Hatching: A Finnish girl finds a giant egg and raises the hatchling as her pet and surrogate daughter. IFC Midnight picked it up after a successful Sundance debut, where one reviewer dubbed it “wild and weird.” Hatching official site.

IN DEVELOPMENT (completed):

Topelt Turbo (2022): Two kick-ass twin female cops go looking for a nuclear-powered turbo engine. In Estonian cinemas this summer; hard to guess when this might make it’s way to English-speaking audiences, but we’ll be keeping an eye out. Topelt Turbo official Facebook page.

NEW ON HOME VIDEO:

12 Monkeys (1995): Read the Canonically Weird entry! Universal just re-released their Twelve Monkeys Blu-ray in March; apparently, the left the rights to release the Ultra HD 4K Blu-ray to licensee Arrow, which debuts it this week. Buy 12 Monkeys [4K UHD].

Dementia (1955): Read the Canonically Weird entry! The 1950s public domain surrealist noir (or noirishly surreal) oddity gets a Blu-ray (and DVD) release from Cohen Media, “digitally remastered” and including the Daughter of Horror cut. It replaces the out-of-print and expensive DVD from Kino as pick of the crop. Buy Dementia.

The Long Walk (2019): A ghost enables a man to time-travel back to the moment of his mother’s death. Minimalist magical realism from Laos, being marketed as horror/sci-fi in some quarters. On DVD, Blu-ray or VOD. Buy or rent The Long Walk.

Moon Manor (2022): Read our review. An aging bohemian stages his own “fun-eral” in this psychedelic right-to-die manifesto. It’s very popular with its target audience. Buy Moon Manor.

“Wonder Egg Priority: The Complete Season” (2021): A girl finds a mysterious “wonder egg” that causes her and others to enter a dream world where they must defeat monsters. Cultural differences make it occasionally hard to identify Japanese anime series as “weird,” but this one caught our eye somehow—and one reviewer did call it “the weirdest yet most fascinating anime of the year.” There are complaints about the ending petering out with frustrating unanswered questions, but still—maybe it would pair well with Hatching, above. Buy “Wonder Egg Priority: The Complete Season.”

WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE:

Screening nominations are still open for our next Weird Watch Party, scheduled for Saturday, May 7 at 10:15 PM ET. (If nothing changes over the weekend, we’ll be watching Fatal Pulse, ‘s typically odd 2018 take on the action thriller genre.)

In reviews next week, Giles Edwards will log the reader-suggested Saint Bernard (2013), the weird-as-hell conductor in Wonderland feature that ran at our last weird watch party. Then Gregory J. Smalley will take on another reader-suggestion, ‘s sexually explicit 2004 feminist whatsit Anatomy of Hell. Onward and weirdward!

What are you looking forward to? If you have any weird movie leads that we have overlooked, feel free to leave them in the COMMENTS section.

PLANNING MAY 7’S WEIRD WATCH PARTY

We’re ready to take suggestions and votes in the comments for our next Weird Watch party, tentatively scheduled for Saturday, May 7 at 10:15 PM ET.

If you’d like to attend our watch party, then the important thing is to RSVP in the comments, where you can make a screening suggestion, or just say you plan to be there.

Nominations are open for movies on any of the three platforms we’ve used—Netflix, Prime or Tubi/Kast. When making your nomination, simply comment with “I think we should watch Weird Movie on Netflix” or “I propose Strange Movie on Tubi” or “How about Weird Movie 2: Electric Boogaloo on Prime?”

When the party is set to begin we’ll announce it in three places:

  • On this site (if you’ve signed up for regular email alerts via the sidebar you’ll also get a notice that way)
  • On our Facebook page
  • On Twitter

Make your nominations and/or RSVP in the comments below.
