IN THEATERS (LIMITED RELEASE):

Bob Spit – We Do Not Like People (2021): A hybrid stop-motion-animated  fiction-documentary about cartoonist Angelli, who reflects on his career while inside his brain his most famous character, the punk Bob Spit, fights tiny Elton Johns, and his own creator, in a post-apocalyptic landscape. Reportedly there is little context given to the Spit character, who’s well known in Brazil, making it arguably a weirder experience for North Americans. Playing in LA only, as far as we can tell. The Scary of Sixty-First (2021): A lesbian couple finds a great deal on a NYC apartment, but fall into a conspiratorial rabbit hole when they discover the property was previously owned by Jeffery Epstein. Reviews are mixed, and even its weirdness is somewhat in question, but there’s no doubt it’s a bold premise. Opening at the Quad in Manhattan this week, expanding (and hitting VOD) next week. NEW ON HOME VIDEO:

“Cartoon Saloon’s Irish Folklore Trilogy”: A three-disc Blu-ray set containing the fantastic (but sub-weird) Celtic fantasy The Secret of Kells (2009), plus the similarly styled followups The Song of the Sea (2014) and Wolfwalkers (2020). A fine gift set for animation fans with good taste. Note that Wolfwalkers is currently not available outside of this box. Buy “Cartoon Saloon’s Irish Folklore Trilogy”.

Damnation (1988): A barfly pines for a married singer. Fans of Eastern European hopelessness may want to snatch up the new Blu-ray of Bela Tarr‘s black and white art-house feature. Buy Damnation.

Donnie Darko (2001): Read the Canonical entry! Another Arrow re-release of the constantly re-released teenage time travel cult classic. This “Standard Special Edition” is a 2 disc UHD Blu-ray, but we don’t know how it differs from the 2-disc “Limited Edition” that dropped in April 2021. Buy Donnie Darko.

Dune (1984): Read Eric Gabbard’s review. Arrow released David Lynch‘s least favorite movie in “limited edition” Blu-rays in August and October; now comes a “special edition” 4K UHD Blu-ray. Buy Dune.

Playdurizm (2020): A teenager wakes up in a surreal new reality where he shares a flat with his celebrity crush and his girlfriend. A homoerotic psychological thriller that reportedly owes a debt to Videodrome (1983). On DVD, Blu-ray or VOD. Buy Playdurizm.

“Sylvia Kristel 1970s Collection”: Four softcore features starring the original Emmanulle: Julia (1974), Pastorale 1943 (1978), Mysteries (1978), and the movie of interest to us,  Alain Robbe-Grillet‘s Playing with Fire (1975), an arty dirty movie from Last Year in Marienbad‘s writer in which Sylvia finds herself inside a dreamlike brothel of perversions. Sorry to Bother You (2018): Read the Canonical entry! We just noticed this absurdist satire about an African American telemarketer selling out to climb the corporate ladder is on Tubi, and now it’s “leaving soon.” Give yourself an early Xmas present and catch it while you still can! In reviews next week, Giles Edwards will go deep underground for a look at a dystopian microbudget Hungarian indie, Cybersatan Apocalypse Nightmares. Gregory J. Smalley will stick to the reader-suggested review queue as we go after one of the last Fellini movies we’ve yet to take on, 1983’s And the Ship Sails On. And we’ll have a little bit of fun with polling: we’re going to put our first twenty Apocryphally Weird movies up against the twenty lowest rated Canonically Weird movie from our final reader poll. The original 366 will still be the original 366—but we’ll follow the European football model and engage in a little unofficial promotion and relegation. Just for fun, as the year goes on, we’ll continue to test the popularity of the newer entries against the old stalwarts. Onward and weirdward!
