Suggest a Weird Movie!

Please do not ask “what was that movie?” questions on this page. We set up an entire site here to answer those questions. This page is for suggesting movies to be reviewed.

Know a weird movie? Something strange that glued you to the screen with awe, amazement or reverence, while your more mundane minded friends left the room (or theater) in boredom, confusion or disgust? A movie whose omission from a list of the 366 weirdest movies of all time would offend you on a personal level? Something even I haven’t heard of or considered? There are potentially thousands of forgotten films, critically dismissed films, foreign or independent films that never got a proper release, or misplaced oddities hiding out there that may deserve a place at the table. One man can’t be expected to track them all down. Here is the place to mention those treasured curios that no one else seems to have even heard of. Nominate a movie in the suggestion box and I’ll move it up on my review queue, or at the very least, explain why I’m not going to review it.

NOTICE: The “Suggest of Weird Movie!” feature has become a victim of its own success.  At the time of this update, we have about 250 reader suggestions (!) in queue. (More than that since I last updated the page)! Since we can only do 1 or maybe 2 reviews a week, be aware there may be a huge delay—currently, possibly over a year!—between the time you make a suggestion and the point at which it’s actually reviewed.  I considered shutting down the suggestion box as of 2011, but I decided to let you keep your suggestions coming (if nothing else, it tells us what types of movies readers are interested in seeing reviews of). Just be aware that when you make a suggestion, it may not receive the promptest of attention. The best you can really hope for at this point is to bring something to our attention that we might have overlooked. (Also note that although we prioritize the earliest nominations later suggestions may get reviewed before earlier ones if they receive a re-release on DVD or Blu-ray, or interest us for our own inscrutable reasons).

If you can’t wait for one of our staff to review your movie, why not review it yourself and submit it to us via the contact form?  We can’t swear we’ll publish every submission we receive, but we want reader participation and we are fairly liberal.

All serious suggestions will receive a response, as well as all most non-serious ones.

  1. Here’s the review queue of reader suggestions that have yet to be reviewed, in alphabetical order. You can always see this list ordered according to intended order of publication in the weekly “What’s in the Pipeline” column (published on Sundays).

Be aware that, given the number of titles here, there will be a (long and ever-growing ) delay between suggesting a title and its eventual review.

  2. “Memoirs of a Survivor” (1981) David Gladwell

Julie Christie has starred in a couple of weird movies; but stranger than “Demon Seed,” stranger than “Don’t Look Now” is the mysterious apocalyptic vision “Memoirs of a Survivor.” Based on a quasi-autobiographical novel by Doris Lessing (who co-wrote the screenplay), this moody dream piece features Christie as a middle aged apartment dweller, living alone during a chaotic time where law and order has broken down. Bands of feral children inhabit the subways, garbage covers the streets and nomadic people scavenge in aimless traveling groups. The woman is given a young teenage girl to take care of and the girl becomes sexually involved with a young man who takes on the responsibility of caring for the homeless children (while having sex with the older ones). Alongside this melancholic tale, there’s another dimension revealed when the woman discovers a victorian family living inside a membranous wall of her apartment. Anchor Bay did release this poetic 1981 film and should still be available. Highly recommended for the weird list.

I also second “In a Glass Cage.” It’s astonishing.

  3. Trying to find someone to tell me the actual name of this movie. I think the movie was from the 70’s. I thought it was called The Bird people but I cant find it. It was filmed in Florida around the Peace River. It was about people who (I think) turned into birds. The only scene I remember was with people crouching near the river and then a shot of at least one of the flying off after turning into a bird. I saw the movie on HBO and the ending credits said thank you to the town of Arcadia, Wauchula, And John Deere …. I remember all of that but not much about the movie at all. English

  4. Catching up with suggestions:

In a Glass Cage is already in the review queue.

purplefig: We’re planning to deal with R100 as a new release when (if?) it gets its Region 1 DVD release. I’ll add it to the end of the queue just in case, though.

Steve: I can add Memoirs of a Survivor to the review queue.

BJ: Wrong place to ask, I suggest you post that question at our sister site, I Remember This Movie.

  5. I remember little of this movie it was long ago when I watched it. Watched it in the early 90s

husband and wife (or a couple) he likes sex parties orgies and takes her to them. He encourages her to take part.

She sees him have sex with other women at the party

    Large orgy scenes quite graphic

he takes her to another sex party orgy and this time encourages her to have sex with other men. She resists but then gives in and allows men at the sex party to f*** her

In the car after the party he is annoyed she had sex and asks if she enjoyed it, she replied she did and he slaps her really hard in the car.

that’s all I can recall can’t find the movie title , please help thanks

  6. Hi.

I would like to recommend the film A Field in England by director Ben Whatley. This work, full of alchemy, magic mushrooms and sorcery, can be defined as an episode of the TV-comedy Blackadder. This time directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky. Highly recommended for this web site.

  7. its with this voodoo statue comes alive when his medalian necklace falls off he comes to life and start killing with his little spear at the end the woman is on the floor holding a knife in her hand with a smerk on her face with sharp teeth waiting for her husband to come home

  8. This movie was late 90’s early 2000’s.A kid plays a game he can’t stop till it’s over.He sees murders in his town through the killer’s eyes. When he wakes up it’s all real. The killer goes after the girlfriend across the street eventully and he finds the killer and wins the game.At the end he gives the game to his teacher he hates knowing he will die if he plays it.What is the name of it?Let me know.

    rod barreau

  9. Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, a 2007 fantasy comedy film written and directed by Zach Helm, starring Dustin Hoffman as the owner of a magical toy store. This might go in the queue (if it’s not there already).

  10. I seen a movie when I was young in the late 80s. All I can remember about it is that it was about a young brunette girl around 5 years old, she wore her hair in pigtails with ribbons and had bangs. Either in the opening or closing credits it shows her playing in the yard I believe chasing a rabbit. The child’s mom was mean and I remember her locking the little girl in a closet or something to punish her. That’s really all I remember about it and I have been searching for years but no one ever knows what I’m talking about. Please help if you can.

  11. I have to suggest the full filmography of the excellently weird/mad Rosto A.D., whose films include Beheaded, Jona/Tomberry, The Monster of Nix, The Three Wreckers, and a number of others. He has a distinctive style where he’ll take live actors, green-screen out their heads, and animate enormous caricature heads in their places.

The Monster of Nix is probably the most accessible (and longest) of his films thus far, and can be found on YouTube. Interestingly enough, all of his films seem to fit together, and if you view them all there seems to be a bizarre but continuous thread connecting them all together.

  12. Very old movie i saw when i was little..it had to do with a little blonde girl (10 or so). And i remember her mom and a man who i dont think was her father sitting at the table and the girl starts swaying back and forth and plates start to spin and things move. I also remember a creepy looking old woman in a subway maybe? And a man in the car with sewing needles stabbed into his eyes. Please help! I remember being terrified of this movie.

  13. Hi, a couple to suggest, Czech film Conspirators of Pleasure, (Czech: Spiklenci slasti) by Jan Švankmajer. I see you’ve got his Alice on the list, and a couple on the candidate list. They don’t come must stranger than this one though. Also although Czech it’s entirely without dialogue so completely accessible.

Secondly, the Chinese film The Midnight After, from director Fruit Chan. About a diverse group on a bus who after traveling through a tunnel discover Hong Kong suddenly completely deserted, the strangeness just escalates from there, from strange gas-masked figures watching them, some sort of contagious disintegrating condition, odd unexplained visions, strange screeching calls to their cell phones, and a random musical interlude.

  14. Cynthia and Shawn: Please ask your questions here, this thread is for suggesting movies for review.

Emojk: I can add Taosim Drunkard (AKA Drunken Wu Tang, AKA “that watermelon monster movie”) to the queue.

AlgusUnderdunk: Same for “The Monster of Nix.”

Dean: Conspirators of Pleasure is already in the queue (see post at top of page), but I can add The Midnight After.

  15. Okay, this is very vague but the movie had a depressing tone. It was animated, or stop motion. The scene that I remember most is the main is riding his bike during a rainstorm, and he lives in an area that could be based off France. There comes a point where he is riding his bike up this really big hill and it captures how sad he is. If I remember correctly, the whole scene was animated but the scenery and character where all being movies by those old wheels that you see in old clocks. Also, if it helps, I think the guy was blond and in a biker’s outfit like those they where in Tour de franc.
I really hope this helps because it is driving me crazy that I can’t find it!

    Thank you!

  16. Read and appreciated the recent review of “Picnic at Hanging Rock”, one of my favorite movies…another very weird Peter Weir movie is “The Last Wave”, which from a cursory search I can’t find mentioned on your site. (If I missed it, forgive me for bringing it up.) While “Picnic” is a beautiful and dreamlike movie, “Wave” is full of Fortean strangeness. The first scene of the movie shows a rain of frogs from the sky in an isolated Outback town, and by the end of the film the protagonist (Richard Chamberlain) is adrift in his own personal Dreamtime and has discovered that the Aboriginals are hiding a very deep and profound secret from the rest of the human race. It’s a neat little jaw dropper, very well made and acted, and if you’re not aware of it, I highly recommend it for your List.

  17. Mouse Soup (1992)

Really odd compilation of kids claymation shorts. It was a part of PBS’s Long Ago and Far Away. There was one episode that involved an elephant whose parents don’t come back after going out on rowing trip and he ends up staying with his grandpa. Some of the freakiest claymation I’ve ever seen in that episode.

  18. michael cavanaugh: look at the site’s font page.

Nick T.: We can look into “Mouse Soup” down the road.

JB: Sorry, I saw Mindwarp not too long ago and although it’s not a bad movie at all, I don’t think it stands a chance of making the List, so I will sadly pass on reviewing it.

  19. “Jesus of Montreal” and “Days of Darkness” Dir:Denys Arcand
Maybe the weirdness in “Days of Darkness” is a bit too subtle to make the list.
Herzog I think has a few weird films, with out dwarves: “Stoszek”, “Encounters at the End of the World” (is it really a documentary? or found footage used by a human actor claiming to be an alien…)
What about “Dr. Strangelove” Ok, it may be considered mainstream, but it’s popularity & brilliance does not in anyway diminish its’ weirdness.
ok, a bit silly, and perhaps getting a bit too middle of the road: “Cold Souls”.
Can it be considered weird enough if it is on Netflix: “Adam’s Apples” (I think if “Elling” made it, so should Adam)

One last thought: “Lucky” (2004) about a necrophiliac drunk looser and Lucky, a sadomasochistic zombie dog. Together they have lots of fun. (Ah, it is already on the suggestion list..my bad)

Thanks for the awesome site, I’ve been recommending it to my weird friends.

  20. First of all, I second “The Mighty Boosh” being on the list. In a similar vein, I recommend the TV show “Noel Fielding’s Luxury Comedy” (Noel Fielding was one of the co-creators of The Mighty Boosh, so the styles are similar). My second recommendation is “Wonder Showzen”, a bizarre and often dark “Sesame Street” parody- also a TV show.
One final though- my friend showed me a extremely trippy movie called “Wave Twisters”. It’s supposed to be the first turntablism-based musical movies ever made, at least according to Wikipedia. The plot is very sparse, but it’s more or less a psychedelic version of Star Wars… with dentists.
Awesome site you guys are running, easily become a favorite of mine!

  21. Two suggestions:

    Six-String Samurai – 1998 – http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118736/ – movie about a rock ‘n’ roll samurai who travels a post-apocalyptic world to Vegas.

Dr. Otto and the Riddle of the Gloom Beam – 1986 – http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090968/ – I’m not even sure how to describe this one! Ernest plays an evil / mad scientist out to destroy the world’s financial system. Oh, and he has a hand growing out of his head.

  22. Bubba Ho-tep!

What’s not to like? Elvis is alive and kicking in an old folks home with a guy who thinks he’s JFK. Then add an Egyptian mummy roaming the halls and killing the residents.

  23. Welcome to the new readers here from “neatorama.”

Marcella: I loved Jesus of Montreal, but didn’t think of it as particularly weird. Stroszek is already in the queue, and we did review Cold Souls back when it came out. Of the ones you mentioned I can add Encounters at the End of the World to the queue.

Katie: We’ll cover TV shows occasionally because they are of interest to readers, but unless it’s an actual movie it’s probably not going to make the List. Wave Twisters, on the other hand, sounds kind of interesting so I can add it.

John P.: Six-String Samurai is alive for the List. I can add Dr. Otto and the Riddle of the Gloom Beam to the queue.

David: Bubba Ho-tep is already in the queue.

Cathy: Freaks is a candidate and you can actually vote for it in the current readers’ choice poll.

Ron: Bloodsucking Freaks (sorry, ruled it out).

Andrew: We’ll look at That Day. At least one of Raoul Ruiz’ movies will eventually make the List.

    Thanks all!

  24. i watch this movie in tv and i cant rember the name
the movie start in school thay Wait for the school clook
for the school’s over and summer vacation come and have
three kids who get out for summer vacation and have a secret fort but thay not have door. where they bury their favorite things and are dealing with a older bully and girls who take their stuff and there is an old man who they sneak into his yard(too take door to the fort house) and he chases them

one more part of the movie the kids chases after ice cream truck that yell ice cream ice cream!! and one more think some kid lost his lucky Chain,or lucky star
    and become a bad luck.

  25. I know you’re already obscenely busy with that list, but I have to suggest Philosophy of a Knife. You’ve already got Andrey Iskanov’s other films on this list, and I’d say this one is his best (not good, mind you, but better than those others).

  26. You should check out Spookies, a movie which I filed under the category of bat-shit insane. Here’s a summary from IMDB:

“Taking a wrong turn, travelers find themselves trapped in a mysterious house. One horror after another threatens them as the sorcerer who lives within needs sacrifices to give eternal life to his beautiful bride”

    1. A young woman is facing her destructive multiple personalities using an experimental new procedure known as “The Siamese Burn.”

  27. Eika Katappa (Werner Schroeter, 1969) – a radical amalgamation of film, opera and theatre, with intentionally asynchronous relation between arias and actors. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064280/

Nocturno 29 (Pere Portabella, 1968) + short No compteu amb els dits (Don’t Count with Your Fingers, 1967), as a companion piece – anti-Franco, non-narrative, genre-defying films with beautiful cinematography. Extremely experimental.

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0148533/

  28. so a tune randomly came into my head and I tried to remember from what movie it was from. I started remembering little scenes from the movie. The first that came to my mind was the beginning where a mom and her son and the son’s monkey are on a boat to a forgien place. The son is scared of the crazy waves and a sea monster that is in the water. His mother starts singing a song to whistle when ever he is scared to keep the fear away.
The next scene I remember is where the son and this princess or pretty young girl are on a hot air ballon. the son’s mom tries to get to her child but can’t.
I also remember a ton of kids with umbrellas walking around singing a song (the song that came to my head in the beginning).
