Discussed in this episode:
Megalopolis re-release: Read our Megalopolis “three takes” review. Francis Ford Coppola refuses to give up on Megalopolis despite the movie flopping at the box office, and now hopes to revive it theatrically annually for New Years’ Day. Alamo Drafthouse is willing to play along, this year, at least. Even more interesting, though, is the fact that Coppola wants to make another cut, Megalopolis Unbound, a longer, weirder version (with dream sequences that didn’t make the initial cut). More in this snarky article from The Guardian.
STAFF CONSENSUS TOP WEIRD MOVIES OF 2025:
10 (tie). The Shrouds: “Starting from a typically Cronenbergian premise–straddling the line that separates the just barely plausible from the utterly implausible, but presented as if it were perfectly natural—the august director takes a deep dive into human depravity and loss, accompanied by plentiful hallucinations.“–Gregory J. Smalley
7. Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass: “The meandering pace, repetitions, and lack of clear narrative may be off-putting to some viewers, but the films of the Brothers Quay have always been more about the experience of seeing than storytelling. For fans, this one is definitely a long-anticipated must-see.“–Enar Clarke
6. Mr. K: “As the journey deepens, Mr. K asks a lot of questions but provides no answers. It’s left open-ended enough for the viewer to decide on their own interpretation…“–Enar Clarke
5. Boys Go to Jupiter: “Mid-’90s-style computer-animation visuals in a mid-’00s-style slacker dramedy with a mid-’10s-style soundtrack make Boys Go to Jupiter something of a disorienting experience. Also: a dozen or so odd little aliens, a hyper-intelligent dolphin running a juice concern, and a Spanish-speaking mini-golf dinosaur skeleton.“–Giles Edwards
4. Baby Invasion: “…a ‘romp’ can really only be so disturbing before it leaves romp territory, so perhaps the director did things correctly. Regardless, Baby Invasion is, without a doubt, exactly what Harmony Korine wanted it to be…“–Giles Edwards
3. Universal Language: “Rankin’s icy fantasia is the premier (well, only) fusion of Canadian absurdism and Iranian neorealism.“–Gregory J. Smalley
2. Reflection in a Dead Diamond: “Cattet & Forzani whirl their inspirations in a blender while pushing a cornucopia of sub-genres up to and past the breaking point — including the popular kink, “CMNKWF”. (That’s “Clothed Male, Naked Katana-Wielding Female,” for those not in the loop.)“–Giles Edwards
1. Kill the Jockey: “Even before his traumatic brain injury, Remo is not well in the head, and director Luis Ortega’s narrative reflects that haziness. Once our fractured jockey hits the streets in a borrowed lady’s fur coat (with elegant handbag), all bets are off as Kill the Jockey careens toward its mystical photo-finish.“–Giles Edwards
WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE:
Richard Bailey has a new film out (poetic/apocalyptic horror Howler, now available for rental on Amazon Prime) and will be our guest on next week’s Pod 366. In written content, we handle a number of titles that have been hanging out in our reader-suggested queue as Micheal Diamades takes a bite of the Danish Neo-Nazi character study Adam’s Apples (2005), Enar Clarke covers the ultra-rare art-house/softcore sci-fi porno Spermula (1976), and Shane Wilson gets sucked into the black hole of Deep Dark (2015), while Giles Edwards gives you the lowdown on the aforementioned Howler ahead of our interview with Mr. Bailey. Onward and weirdward!
