WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE

First, an announcement for those who don’t constantly keep tabs on the tabs menu at the top of the page: there’s a new tab we’ve tabbed “Forum.” If you follow that link you’ll find two new message boards: “What Was That Weird Movie?” (which we hope will be a better organized version of the page of the same name) and “General Chat.” These are places where you, the readers at home, can start your own discussion topics and meet up with like minded weirdos. Come and join early adopter Cameron Jorgensen in the General Chat forum, and when we’re as famous as 4chan you’ll be able to say you were there at the beginning. We consider this feature still in “beta,” but we haven’t noticed any bugs or serious problems with it yet (fingers crossed!)

Back to regular business: our review slate for next week begins with the budget-surrealism feature This Is Not a Movie (2011). Then, we’ll set out on the surreal seas with two weird nautical features: Raoul Ruiz’ Three Crowns of the Sailor (1983) (via the reader-suggested review queue) and the Beatles Yellow Submarine (1968). Alfred will return us to solid ground for his continuing Halloween-season coverage of the great Val Lewton with 1944’s Curse of the Cat People.

We’ll start off our survey of the weirdest search terms used to locate the site this week with one that proves that a single letter can make the difference between a pretty reasonable Google query and a startlingly strange one: “pie predicting stock market movie.” (In case you don’t get it, this is what the searcher was looking for). Our runner-up for Weirdest Search Term of the Week is the incomprehensible “the film of the woman remember her bast when take her bath” (Google helpfully suggests the searcher meant to type “the film of the woman remember her breast when take her bath,” which is only slightly more coherent). But the official winner makes even less sense: “1. who wrote the diary? 2. why did robin decide to write a diary? ответы.” “ответы” means “answers” in Russian, but it seems a bit odd that the second question appears to answer the first—and why ask the questions in English if the searcher is a Russian speaker? We may never know the ответы to these questions, which is what makes this our Weirdest Search Term of the Week.

Here’s how the ridiculously-long-and-ever-growing reader-suggested review queue stands: Three Crowns of the Sailor (next week!); The Hour-glass Sanatorium [Saanatorium pod klepsidra]; Liquid Sky (re-review); Society; Final Programme; “Foutaises”; Bloodsucking Freaks; Lost Highway; Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (official review); Dogville; Julien Donkey-boy; Amelie; The 7 Faces of Dr. Lao; 1; Fast, Cheap and Out of Control; Tokyo Gore Police; At Midnight I’ll Take Your Soul; The Trial [Le procès] (1962); MarquisHell Comes to Frogtown; Seom [The Isle]; Allegro Non Troppo; Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus; Lust in the Dust; Celine and Julie Go Boating; “Franz Kafka’s It’s a Wonderful Life;” The Magic Christian; Black Cat, White Cat; The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T; Abnormal: The Sinema of Nick Zedd; Robot Monster; Nightdreams; 3 Women; “To Oblivion”; Rubin & Ed; Teeth; Vera; Weirdsville; Prospero’s Books; Inferno; Garden State; Persona; The Real McCoy; Rat Pfink a Boo Boo; Themroc; Candy (1968); Run Lola Run; Pink Flamingos; Buffalo ’66Northfork; Weekend; The Room; Glen or Glenda?; Night of the Hunter; The Fox FamilyMidnight Skater; Angelus; Cloudy with a Chance of  Meatballs; Twister (1989); Yokai Monsters, Vol. 1: Spook Warfare [AKA Big Monster War]; Britannia Hospital; This Filthy Earth; Conspirators of Pleasure; Piano Tuner of Earthquakes; Clean, Shaven; Bubba Ho-Tep; Sheitan; Innocence; “Chingsao the Clown”; Léolo; 2001: A Space Odyssey; Blue Velvet; ID (2005); Master of the Flying Guillotine; Yesterday Was a Lie; The Ninth Configuration; Love Me If You DareForbidden Zone; The Cell; My Dinner with Andre; The Illustrated ManFando y Lis; Rampo Noir; Head; Christmas on Mars; “Broken Glass”; Videodrome; Air Doll; The Ossuary and Other Tales; Arrebato; Symbol; Wicked City (1992  live action); Picnic at Hanging Rock; The Cars that Ate Paris; The Boxer’s Omen [aka Mo];  Portrait of Jennie; Salo, the 120 Days of  Sodom; The Last Sunset (1961); Orpheus (1950); A Scanner Darkly; Safe; The Atrocity Exhibition; Slacker; Goke, Body Snatcher From Hell; Color of Pomegranates; Horror Express; Noroi; Cutie Honey; The Shape of Things; On the Silver Globe; Monty Python and the Holy Grail; Sgt. 1. I think the missing context for the winner this week is that there is a Russian person taking an English language reading comprehension exam.

  2. At the risk of being a nudge (I think I mentioned this one on a thread that began in August), I’d like to suggest Brian De Palma’s “Phantom of the Paradise.” His rock n’ roll horror/satire/musical blend of “Faust” and “Phantom of the Opera” is funny, haunting, and exceptionally weird, and seems custom-made for midnight showings.
