Suggest a Weird Movie!

Please do not ask “what was that movie?” questions on this page. We set up an entire site here to answer those questions. This page is for suggesting movies to be reviewed.

Know a weird movie? Something strange that glued you to the screen with awe, amazement or reverence, while your more mundane minded friends left the room (or theater) in boredom, confusion or disgust? A movie whose omission from a list of the 366 weirdest movies of all time would offend you on a personal level? Something even I haven’t heard of or considered? There are potentially thousands of forgotten films, critically dismissed films, foreign or independent films that never got a proper release, or misplaced oddities hiding out there that may deserve a place at the table. One man can’t be expected to track them all down. Here is the place to mention those treasured curios that no one else seems to have even heard of. Nominate a movie in the suggestion box and I’ll move it up on my review queue, or at the very least, explain why I’m not going to review it.

NOTICE: The “Suggest of Weird Movie!” feature has become a victim of its own success.  At the time of this update, we have about 250 reader suggestions (!) in queue. (More than that since I last updated the page)! Since we can only do 1 or maybe 2 reviews a week, be aware there may be a huge delay—currently, possibly over a year!—between the time you make a suggestion and the point at which it’s actually reviewed.  I considered shutting down the suggestion box as of 2011, but I decided to let you keep your suggestions coming (if nothing else, it tells us what types of movies readers are interested in seeing reviews of). Just be aware that when you make a suggestion, it may not receive the promptest of attention. The best you can really hope for at this point is to bring something to our attention that we might have overlooked. (Also note that although we prioritize the earliest nominations later suggestions may get reviewed before earlier ones if they receive a re-release on DVD or Blu-ray, or interest us for our own inscrutable reasons).

If you can’t wait for one of our staff to review your movie, why not review it yourself and submit it to us via the contact form?  We can’t swear we’ll publish every submission we receive, but we want reader participation and we are fairly liberal.

All serious suggestions will receive a response, as well as all most non-serious ones.

    1. Un Chien Andalou absolutely needs to be on this list. It’s a 16 minute film by Salvador Dali about a woman’s eye being slit and juxtaposed, and followed by a series of strange and unrelated events. Known as one of the greatest surrealist films of all time.

    3. “My Son, My Son What Have Ye Done” Is a strong contender for Herzog’s weirdest and most playful film.
      I’d also recommend “Flooding With Love for the Kid” Which is a one man adaptation of the novel First Blood. He acts out every scene, plays every character.

  5. Has anyone mentioned the Cement Garden? It was my first weird movie. It has weird movie mainstay Charlottle Gainsbourg.

    Also maybe its too self aware to qualify but Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.

  6. I just updated the queue and it’s already out of date! No, feraltorte, i don’t believe anyone has mentioned The Cement Garden before, so I can add it. Beyond the Valley of the Dolls would be appropriate to consider, too, but come back later with that suggestion! (Self-awareness is not a problem).

  9. I am not sure if it’s even worth-mentioning as I didn’t even bother to see it but my friends who were excited to see “The Astronaut’s Wife” (1999) way back all told me it was good enough to make it to the top list of worst movies ever.

    1. Hmm… the queue is pretty large right now as it is without putting in borderline suggestions. Rosie, I challenge you to actually watch The Astronaut’s Wife and then come back and tell us whether its worth a recommendation or not!

    1. Visions of Suffering, Nails, and Philosophy of a Knife. Philosophy of a Knife I have previously suggested. Iskanov is easily the weirdest director of our times- and I say that as a huge fan of Lynch, Gilliam, Bunuel, Miike, and Jorodowsky.

  18. I would like to suggest In the Mouth of Madness. Probably the best of John Carpenter’s 90s films, and the weirdest in his catalogue.

  19. Good idea, Kevin. Carpenter is (or at least was) an offbeat and interesting director, but on the margins of what we’d consider “weird.” His weirdest film should definitely get some consideration.

  23. Hi Pixel! Week End and La Double vie de Véronique are in the queue above (as Weekend and The Double Life of Veronique). The Exterminating Angel is not (I’m as surprised by that as you are). I am going to skip over your suggestions of Container and Possible Worlds (neither of which are available on Region 1 DVD at the moment) and add Exterminating Angel. Thanks!

  24. Just saw Bob Fosse’s “All that Jazz”, and it’s quite an extravagant masterpiece. It’s pretty weird at times, but i actually don’t know if that is a weirdness inherent to the genre of musicals, or if that film is truly one of a kind. Maybe you’ve got an opinion on that ? Worth a review anyway 🙂

    jef t-scale: we already reviewed and certified the very weird The Dark Backward. We’re aware of but holding off on Emperor Tomato Ketchup pending a possible Region 1 release, but Hanger is readily available, so I’ll put that one into the queue.

  34. I’d like to suggest the animation ‘THE RETURN OF JOHN FRUM’ for your short film list

    why it should be on the list:
    a space traveller in an office building crashes down on industrial ruins and takes a a native for a piggy-back ride and then I’m not exactly sure what happens, but it looks absolutely stunning
    apparently it has been created by one single person (a student !!!) alone, but it looks like the finest studio animation possible, and it’s available with a creative commons license, i.e. free to watch.

  39. Dwarf: You saw Cosmopolis? You Europeans have all the fun. There’s no US release date set yet. I was assuming from the synopsis and what I know of the source novel that it was not weird. However, it is from Cronenberg and so we should give it a chance. I’ll try to get it reviewed when it is released here.

    1. I already reviewed it. Lots of people seem to really love The Baby. I liked it well enough but I didn’t find it terribly weird. I can occasionally be convinced to change my mind, though–once a year or so we hold a poll and a movie I’ve dismissed will be given a second chance at making the List. Maybe The Baby will win this year?

  42. Monobloc (Luis Ortega, 2005) – very underrated and enigmatic movie with brilliant cinematography and surreal atmosphere. It moves like an absurd, depressive dream and the characters (all female) feel like echoes of former lives, stuck in some kind of limbo. IMDb link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0362873/

  43. “My Son, My Son What Have Ye Done?” – Perhaps Herzog’s most playful film is also a strong contender for his weirdest, and Lynch produced it which can be felt throughout. I’d also recommend “Flooding With Love for the Kid” – A one man crew, no budget adaptation of the novel First Blood. Everything is done by one young man, he acts every character, directs… everything.

  44. NGBoo: It looks like it will be hard to track down a copy of Monobloc, but since it will be at the end of the queue maybe it will be released somewhere by the time we finally get to it.

    benben: We’ve already reviewed both those. My Son is weird indeed, but I didn’t find it well done (especially by Herzog standards). I liked Flooding much better, actually. We didn’t put it on the List, but Zachary Oberzan’s amazing performance did nab him a “Weirdest Actor” award in our 2010 Weirdcademy Awards!

  45. Tom Waits bizzare concert film with bits of him acting shoved in called “Big Time”. From performing on stage and telling odd stories to standing on a roof with an umbrella on fire this is a odd film, Tom Waits “Big Time”

    Also music videos by the rap band “Die Antwoord” should go into suggestions. Videos like “Evil Boy” and “I Fink U Freeky”

This is actually a short film but I think it fits here nicely, Slow Bob in the Lower Dimensions. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Izb6rKX28bM It’s about a man who in his normal stop-motion animated life is tormented by his conjoined sisters. But when five lizards send him to a world of photographs, it’s up to him to rescue them all from the scissorbirds.

    1. Jake: Big Time may be the weirdest concert movie ever made. It’s a good suggestion, My only reservation is that I love Tom Waits’ music so much it may bias me in favor of the movie where a non-fan might dismiss it. I’ll put it in the queue, though.

      Algus: “Slow Bob” is by Henry Selick, by the way, and was produced by MTV (as a pilot for a possible series). It was on an old collection of shorts and bumpers called “I Want My MTV” that was available on VHS. That compilation might be worth reviewing.

  47. Has anyone seen “Vakvagany”? It’s the weirdest Documentary I think I’ve ever seen. Very interesting, pretty disturbing (or at least unsettling) and wholly weird. I would like to officially suggest it as a candidate for review here. It features interviews with Stan Brakhage which is a good indicator of what type of weird it is.
