WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE

Only 7 more movies to Certify Weird! You may attempt to guess the remaining titles in the comments if you wish.

Next week Alfred Eaker plans to look at Dennis Potter’s 1969 teleplay Son of Man, a controversial (at the time) retelling of the Passion. Then, Giles Edwards goes Japanese with Vampire Clay, the eerie story of, well, vampiric clay. G. Smalley brings you Apocalypsis, the psychedelic Christian conspiracy theory thriller you did not see coming, as well as a second look at the 1985 Soviet antiwar nightmare Come and See. Come and see us all next week! The countdown is in full swing.

Now’s the time when we bring you our survey of the weirdest search terms that brought visitors to the site this week, a feature we like to call “Weirdest Search Terms of the Week.” We’ll start off with the return of an old favorite: the ultra-mysterious “friends boring strangers,” which has been showing up on the list for years now (though it hadn’t been spotted for months). Next up, we’ll mention “movie with guy who cant take his glasses off because of eye lasers.” But for our official Weirdest Search Term of the Week, we’ll go with “woman pretends to be pregnant and eats men through vagina movie.” Not sure why she would have to pretend to be pregnant—unless it’s to hide the evidence?

And finally, it’s time for our weekly cut n’ paste disclaimer regarding the reader-suggested review queue below: since we will definitely not be getting to all of these (although we will pick out the occasional title), you can consider this a list of “honorable mentions” for your own perusal and amusement. That out of the way, here’s how the ridiculously-long reader-suggested review queue now stands: Genius Party; The Idiots; “Premium” (depending on availability); Spermula; Killer Condom; Sir Henry at Rawlinson End; Moebius (1996); Adventures of Picasso; Charly: Dias de Sangre (depending on availability); Buddy Boy (1999); Bliss (1985); La cicatrice intérieure; Chronopolis; MetropiaBattle in HeavenBuffet Froid; Dunyayi Kurtaran Adam [AKA Turkish Star Wars]; The Signal; Decasia (2002); Killdozer; Electric Dragon 80,000 V; Strange Circus; Mad Detective; Revolver; Litan (1982) (depending on availability); La Razon de Mi Vida (pending English language DVD release); The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With the Sea; Bernie (1996) (depending on availability); Things (1989); Hair Extensions; Haggard; Svidd neger (depending on availability); RoboGeisha; Executive Koala; Coonskin; Time Masters; Crash (1996); La Cravate; Spirits of the Air, Gremlins of the Clouds (depending on availability); Alphaville; Savages; Big River Man; Little Deaths; L’Ange; La Teta y La Luna; Finisterrae; Vase de Noces; Lucky; La antena; Feherlofia; Versus; Birth of the Overfiend; A Dog Called Pain; Memento Mori; That Deadwood Feeling; Happiness; Porcile [AKA Pigpen]; Hotel (2004); Hardgore; The Last Movie; I Married a Strange Person; Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale; “The Canadian Films of Paul Driessen”; And The Ship Sails On; Mondo Trasho; Space Thang; Drunken Wu Tang [AKA Taoism Drunkard]; Insidious (2010); The Earl Sessions (2011); They Came Back; Prometheus’ Garden, “Harpya”; Bruce Lee vs. Gay Power; Dumplings; Return to Oz; “Star Maidens”; “The Mighty Boosh”; The Element of Crime; Lo; Roller Blade; Dante’s Inferno; Calamari Wrestler; Death Powder (1986); Big Man Japan (official review); Angel in the Flesh: The Confidential Report on Mr. Dennis Duggan aka The King of Super 8 (if it’s released; the director says it might be); Static; “The Big Shave”; Marebito; The Appointment (1981); The Cement Garden; Visions of Suffering; Singapore Sling (re-review); Uzumaki [AKA Spiral] (official re review); Hanger (2009); “Analog”; Daymaker; Monobloc (2005); Big Time; “Slow Bob in the Lower Dimensions”; Vakvagany; Momo (1986); Organ; Dance with the Devil; Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster; “Alicia”; Space Is the Place (official review); Killer Nun; The Nine Lives of Thomas Katz; Ascension; Brick; Creatures of Destiny; Goodbye 20th Century; Boxing Helena; Chappaqua; The Glamorous Life of Sachiko Hanai; Man Facing Southeast; City of Pirates; Pink Narcissus; Teknolust; Dark Side of the Heart; Period Piece; “One Soldier”; Thriller: A Cruel Picture; The Million Dollar Hotel; Diamond Flash; Green Snake; The 10th Victim; Anatomy of Hell; Christ the Movie; Pola X; Phase IV; Welcome to the Dollhouse; Berberian Sound Studio; L’Inferno (1911); Heartbeeps; Bibliotheque Pascal; Marutirtha Hinglaj; A Pure Formality; The Mysterians; Rock n’ Roll High School; Johnny Aquarius; Confessions of a Dangerous Mind; Citizen Dog; Criminal Lovers; The Cat in the Hat; The Sea That Thinks; In Search of the Titanic; Creating Rem Lezar; I Think We’re Alone Now; Edward II (Jarman); Wild Tigers I Have Known; I Never Left the White Room; Faust: Love of the Damned; King Lear (1987); Alien Alibi; La Cabina; Kung Pow: Way of the Fist; Four Rooms; The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari; “Afraid So,”; Bhoner: The MovieThe Passion of Darkly Noon; Riki-Oh: The Story of RikiSomething WeirdGorod Zero; Snow White and Russian RedSphereTout Va Bien; Flaming CreaturesA Woman’s Face (1941); 8 1/2 Women; Nick the Feature Film; Only God Forgives; Nitwit; Homebodies; Celestial Wives Of Meadow MariFiend Without a Face; Fear XWe Are the Strange; Confessions; Monday (depending on availability); Vigasiosexploitation (Vol. 1)The SlitTasher Desh; Womb; The SpiritSurviving Life: Theory and Practice; Galaxy of TerrorPríncipe Azul (depending on availability); Samgeori Geukjang (AKA Midnight Ballad for Ghost Theater); Andy Warhol’s Dracula [AKA Blood for Dracula]; Death PowderAs Filhas do FogoThe Killing RoomFiend (1980); Strangers in Paradise (1984); Vinyan; Suddenly Last Summer; The TwonkyEmperor Tomato Ketchup; FrontierWhere the Dead Go to DieKárate a muerte en Torremolinos (depending on availability); DetentionThe Fifth Season; Junkie (2012); The End of Evangelion (1997); Gandu; Felini’s Casanova; Overdrawn at the Memory Bank; Dead Mountaineer’s Hotel; ExcisionThree… Extremes; Lemora: A Child’s Tale of the SupernaturalA Spell to Ward Off the Darkness; Takeshis’Om Dar-B-DarLive Freaky! 1. I wonder if the final 366th movie will be something you guys have purposely held back on reviewing.

I have to say, with an internet filled with millions of web pages and hundreds and hundreds dedicated to film, this is my favorite film site. You have everyone beat for wonderful reviews, in depth coverage, critical thought and pure pleasurable discovery. I’ve always enjoyed genre films and foreign films; the cultish, the strange and the fringe – but there are dozens of movies this site has exposed me to that I never had even heard of. From your Certified List alone I bought and saw Belladonna of Sadness, Blancanieves; The Cremator; Death Bed: The Bed That Eats; Dementia; Doggiewogiez! Poochiewoochiez!; Eden and After; Funeral Parade of Roses (As a gay person I really appreciated discovering this great film); The Hourglass Sanatorium, I Can See You; L’Inhumaine (My father and I watched this together and we thought it was fantastic) A Page of Madness; Possession; The Saragossa Manuscript; Sans Soleil; Seven Servants (Just got this in the mail 2 weeks ago); The Swimmer (I’m surprised I never knew of this film or the short story) and Zazie dans le Metro (1960).

All these films had something great to offer. I’ve never had a drug addiction, but I have a movie addiction. Think of all the OTHER movies you’ve reviewed and movies I found in the Queue! You guys got me into Guy Maddin, Sergei Parajanov (I’ve enjoyed every film of his I checked out), Alain Robbe-Grillet (bought the UK box set!) Tarkovsky films beyond Solaris, and Andrzej Żuławski.

The RESOURCE you’ve created here has been very informative, extra compelling, always fascinating and VERY special. Thank you so much for your labor of love.

    Michael

  2. I guess that the remaining titles are “Frankenhooker”, “Poultrygeist” and five others based on puns or similar laboured word play. Do I win five pounds?

I would genuinely like to see “Sir Henry At Rawlinson End” in there, as it’s a personal favourite, but I’m not hopeful.

And I heartily agree with Mike Mystagogue, this is a wonderful site that I keep coming back to again and again. You’ve introduced me to some marvellous films, and not only those on the official list. Thank you – long may you run!

All the best from a chilly south of England.

    1. Having seen 330 of the 360 movies currently on the list as well plenty of the candidates and other recommendations, I can say with some confidence this site is an excellent resource for a movie fan.

I haven’t liked all the movies I’ve seen just because I found them here, but I have never been disappointed in the sense that I’ve felt I’ve wasted my time.

  3. Something’s wrong with the site. Sometimes it shows the mobile version instead of the normal version. Is anybody else seeing this, or is it just me?

    1. OK, no worries.

Just a suggestion: look at your caching setup. If the website is set up to serve different content depending on the client, and the cache is not aware of this, then this could cause something exactly like what we’re seeing. Disable the cache and see if that fixes it.
