WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE

Looking at the overall progress of the List, we just realized that there are now less than 150 titles remaining to add until we reach the magic 366. We’ll use up another slot this week. What will it be? ‘s Heart of Glass (the story about a glassblowing village, in which all the actors performed under hypnosis)? Could it be the Hollywood horror satire Starry Eyes, about a struggling actress willing to do anything, Satanic or not, for her big break? Or maybe the Monkees big psychedelic “FU” to their tweenage fanbase, Head? While you pondering those choices, we’ll also remind you that Alfred Eaker will be finishing up his survey of ‘ oeuvre, discussing the Prince of Puke’s move towards near-respectability beginning with Polyester. Whatever you do, just read every word of every article next week! We’re begging you!

Moving on to our weekly survey of weird search terms used to locate the site, we are happy to report that this week was a good deal stranger than previous weeks. Perhaps autumn is driving more people indoors, and turning the young’s fancy towards weirdness. We even encountered search terms that are weird due to their extreme mundanity: “girl opens jar easily in 90’s movie.” The suspense must have been mind-blowing!Less mundane are searches for “alien vagina swallows guy” and the someone looking for info on the rare “robots impregnating women in films” subgenre. On the incomprehensible side of the search term scale we find “beachwalkingdriven by wind sailortheo jansenism.” (No idea how that searcher ended up on our site, or on any site, for that matter). That’s a pretty powerful candidate, but we instead chose “film where midget takes chicken leg out of fat girls mouth” as our official Weirdest Search Term of the Week. There’s just something classically weird about the image it conjures up.

  1. Aaah, I remember Heart of Glass! (Eh, sort of, I watched it kind of hammered). It’s certainly a worthy piece of weirdness, though it’ll be nice to have your review jog my memory on it. Looking forward to that one.

  2. I’ll simply endorse a few titles that stood out to me in the waiting queue: “Endgame” (2000) definitely, filmed Samuel Beckett which also has two amazing performances from Michael Gambon and David Thewlis behind it. “It’s such a beautiful day” , yes, we definitely need some more from animator Don Hertzfelt in the list – I think “World of Tomorrow” would make a better candidate though. “The Enigma of Kasper Hauser” despite it’s strange protagonist, may be too couched in the everyday but is one of the best films I’ve seen from Werner Herzog. If “The End of Evangelion” doesn’t make the list there’s no justice in the world, it features teenagers becoming Gods, the end of the world and the beginning of a new one, not to mention images of the Kabalistic tree of life superimposed over the action. Brother’s Quay collection, yes, but more specifically “Streets of Crocodiles”, good Lord, why isn’t SOC in the list already? “Only God Forgives” maybe, but definitely not “Fear X”, it may have sent Refn bankrupt but it’s not nearly weird enough. “The Secret Life of Tom Thumb” most definitely, also just a great stop motion animation.

    1. “World of Tomorrow” is an interesting suggestion. I’d like to see it anthologized somewhere, because right now they are asking people to pay full feature price to rent a 17-minute short on Vimeo, which is the only legitimate way to see it. Shorts are held to a higher standard for making the List, since they have to compete with features that can easily be five times longer.
