With time running out in the Weirdcademy Awards race (deadline to vote is one week from today, though you can vote once every 24 hours), it will probably take an organized campaign to shift any of the winners (except for the short film category, which remains up for grabs with “Fortunes” holding a slim 3 vote margin over two competitors). In the main races, Strange Frame leads Upstream Color 93-67 for Weirdest Picture; Spring Breakers‘ James Franco holds a 36-20 edge over Antiviral‘s Caleb Landry Jones for Weirdest Actor; and Claudia Black’s fans have been rabid, voting the Australian’s Strange Frame voiceover to a massive 113-26 lead over Upstream Color‘s Amy Seimetz in the Weirdest Actress contest. In the Weirdest Scene race, Spring Breakers‘ rendition of Brittney Spears’ “Everytime” leads “F is for Fart“‘s flatulent apocalypse by a count of 27-14. Make your vote heard here (short films are here) while there’s still time.
Oscar season may be upon us, but next week we’ll be reviewing some not-ready-for-the-Academy-Awards players. The best of these is the heavy metal concert film/music video mashup Metallica: Through the Never, which actually fared well with critics while flopping at the box office. The same couldn’t be said about our next two reviews (well, the flopping at the box office part could be): 1984’s seven-director fiasco Dunegonmaster (which was actually retitled from Ragewar to try to capitalize on the then-hot Dungeons & Dragons phenomenon) and Jess Franco‘s all-messed-up erotic horror A Virgin Among the Living Dead (1973). Alfred joins in the anti-Academy spirit with Flaming Star, the 1930 Western that cast Elvis Presley as a tormented half-breed.
Not a great week in weird search terms, but we’ll report what we can. First up is the search for “www.366weirdmovies.calm”—an amusing misspelling, but we tried not to get too excited about it. Next up is “moon camera sheep capsule,” which we mention not because it’s that strange of a search on its face, but rather because we got 72 hits for it (or nearly identical variations), representing (Google says) a 2,200% increase from previous month’s searches for those terms. (We finally determined what all those people were actually lookng for, but since many of you like to figure these weird search terms out on your own, we’ll leave it to you). For our official Weirdest Search Term of the Week, we’ll select “what is the movie called where 2 guys are sitting around and eat one of their penises?,” which is actually a pretty garden-variety query around these parts, but what are you going to do? The Googlers out there seem to be getting more and more sane and sensible every day. It’s sickening.
