WEIRD HORIZON FOR THE WEEK OF 9/13/2013

Our weekly look at what’s weird in theaters, on hot-off-the-presses DVDs, and on more distant horizons…

Trailers of new release movies are generally available on the official site links.

IN DEVELOPMENT:

Twin Peaks: The Owls Are Not What They Seem (est. 2014): Cameron Cloutier, a Twin Peaks fan, is hoping to make a new, 30 minute short film based in the fictional TV universe as a present for ‘s 68th birthday. The story would involve what happens to Dale Cooper years after the events of the final televised episode. The project is being crowdfunded through Indiegogo; based on what’s been raised so far, we’re not so sure he’s going to make it, but we hope he does. Maybe Lynch himself will kick in the final deficit.  Twin Peaks: The Owls Are Not What They Seem at Indiegogo.

NEW ON DVD:

An American Hippie in Israel (1972): See description in Blu-ray below.

Frankenhooker (1990): A man feeds prostitutes super-crack that makes them explode, then uses their parts to stitch together a new body for his decapitated girlfriend. Twenty-three years later, Synapse finally gives ‘s tasteless The Brain That Wouldn’t Die tribute the special edition DVD it deserves (although this version has been available on Blu-ray since 2011). Buy Frankenhooker.

“Psychopaths & Maniacs”: Seven sleazy direct-to-video movies, including the “surreal” Season in Hell: Evil Farmhouse Torture. Other titles include The Photographer: Inside the Mind of a Psycho, Naked Trip: On the Run from the Mafia, The Brisbee Cannibal Club, Scarlet Fry’s Junkfood Horror Fest, Fetish Dolls Die Laughing, and Zombie Lovers. Even with shipping, this bargain-bin set should still come out under $2 per movie. Buy “Psychopaths & Maniacs”.

Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993): See description in Blu-ray below.

War Witch (2012): Read our capsule review. Not so weird, but a harrowing and worthwhile magical drama about child soldiers in Africa. Buy War Witch.

NEW ON BLU-RAY:

An American Hippie in Israel (1972): A Vietnam vet founds a nudist utopia on a deserted island while being hunted by mimes with machine guns. Grindhouse Releasing calls it a “one of cult cinema’s legendary lost classics” and “the most psychedelic movie ever made.” For now, at least, the DVD is not sold seperately and it can be bought in a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack only. Buy An American Hippie In Israel [Blu-ray/DVD Combo].

Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993): Read our review. We’re unsure how this “20th Anniversary Edition” differs from Disney’s “Collector’s Edition” Blu-ray from a few years ago, unless it’s just the fact that this is a DVD/Blu-ray combo pack. Also available in a Triple Pack that adds a 3D Blu-ray for the few who can play that format. Buy Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas [Blu-ray / DVD combo Pack].

What are you looking forward to? If you have any weird movie leads that I have overlooked, feel free to leave them in the COMMENTS section.

  1. Hope that Twin Peaks guy knows what he’s doing. I’m no expert, but I dare say striking the tone of another director with genuine accuracy is tricky.
