WEIRD HORIZON FOR THE WEEK OF 3/4/2022

366 Weird Movies may earn commissions from purchases made through product links.

Our weekly look at what’s weird in theaters, on hot-off-the-presses DVDs and Blu-rays (and hot off the server VODs), and on more distant horizons…

Trailers of new release movies are generally available at the official site links.

IN THEATERS (LIMITED RELEASE):

Mother Schmuckers (2021): Two dumb and dumber brothers have 24 hours to retrieve their mother’s dog or face eviction. This grossout absurdist comedy from Belgium (in the tradition) is scheduled for a limited theatrical release this week and VOD next week. Review coming soon. No official site located. Trailer below is NSFW (scatology and brief nudity).

IN DEVELOPMENT:

Ash (2022?): Trippy musician Flying Lotus’ second directorial effort will be a sci-fi horror set on a distant planet. “I really want to show the world something they’ve never seen before,” says Lotus. It’s part of a multi-picture deal between Lotus’ company Brainfeeder (Kuso), XYZ Films (Mandy), and France’s Logical Pictures. We can’t guarantee this will be weird, but it’s hard to imagine Flying Lotus signing up for something conventional. Deadline broke the news.

CANONICALLY WEIRD (AND OTHER) REPERTORY SCREENINGS:

This section will no longer be updated regularly. Instead, we direct you to our new “Repertory Cinemas Near You” page. We will continue to mention exceptional events in this space from time to time, however.

FREE ONLINE WEIRD MOVIES ON TUBI:

The Apple (1980): Don’t miss your chance to meet an actual, actual, actual vampire in this campy disco-era musical misfire. Now listed as “leaving soon”. Watch The Apple on Tubi.

WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE:

We’re still seeking input on our next Weird Watch Party (join the convo here), though if nothing changes over the weekend we’ll schedule Keep an Eye Out for Saturday, March 12.

In ongoing polls, our latest Apocrypha Promotion poll closes on March 9, and you can still vote in the 2021 Weirdcademy Awards through most of March.

Next week, Giles Edwards will tell you what the schmuck is up with Mother Schmuckers (above). Then, Shane Wilson dips into the long-neglected reader-suggested review queue to check out the groovy 1965 satire The 10th Victim. Coincidentally, Gregory J. Smalley will also look at a 1965 suggestion, ‘s first color feature, Juliet of the Spirits. Onward and weirdward!

What are you looking forward to? If you have any weird movie leads that we have overlooked, feel free to leave them in the COMMENTS section.

  1. Last Exit: Space. May be of interest to Herzog fans. Directed by Rudolph Herzog (Werners son) and narrated by Werner.

Will it still have that usual Herzog vibe given he’s not directing? At the very least you get to hear the Herzog voice narrating. A couple of lines in the trailer show some promise that it’ll have the Herzog outlook to some degree (had me smiling).
