IN THEATERS (LIMITED RELEASE):

A Night of Knowing Nothing (2022): A documentary by an Indian film student describing a uiversity strike, presented as a series of letters to her absent lover; consistently described by those who’ve seen it as “dreamlike.” Debuting at New York’s Museum of Modern Art this week, expanding to limited venues thereafter. IN DEVELOPMENT (pre-production):

Kafka (202?): A rare biopic we can get down for: Franz Kafka. It will be told through a series of vignettes including ” scenes from the future he envisioned.” Veteran Agnieszka Holland (The Secret Garden) will direct. More at Variety.

IN DEVELOPMENT (post-production):

Men (2022): A24 debuts its latest teaser-trailer to some buzz. We can tell almost nothing about the story—it’s got a vague, emotionally-wounded heroine haunted by mysterious events in the woods synopsis—but we do know Alex Garland (Annihilation) directs Jessie Buckley (I’m Thinking of Ending Things). That doesn’t mean it’s going to be weird, but it should be another quality A42 thinking horror—they rarely whiff. Men official site.

NEW ON HOME VIDEO:

Hiruko the Goblin (1991): A goblin from Hell beheads students as part of a fiendish invasion plan. Shinya Tsukamoto‘s second full-length feature was one of the loose titles Arrow did not acquire for their box set; Mondo Macrabo steps in to rectify the omission with this Blu-ray. “Santo: El Enmascarado De Plata”: 8 Blu-ray set of movies starring the Mexican masked wrestler-cum-superhero Santo fighting (usually supernatural) foes; weird movie fans should be at least aware of the existence of this odd and extremely-specific subgenre. These discs are mastered from export versions, so they are all dubbed in English, and Santo and The Treasure of Dracula is missing nude scenes. Buy “Santo: El Enmascarado de Plata”.

FREE ONLINE WEIRD MOVIES ON TUBI.TV:

Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010): Read the Canonical entry! Panos Cosmatos‘s psychedelic debut is a movie we swear is perpetually on Tubi’s “leaving soon” list; maybe this time they mean it? Watch Beyond the Black Rainbow free on Tubi.tv.

WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE:

Lots of stuff going on the site right now. First off, for the first time ever we did not get the minimum requested number of RSVPs for our Weird Watch Party. We will still go ahead and schedule it (hell, if we canceled we’d probably just spend that same time watching a weird movie alone), but if the turnout to the actual screening is low, we’ll think about scrapping the feature—or maybe get into discussion about a time change. That said, tune in tomorrow night, Saturday Feb. 11, for our Valentine’s Day warm-up, Marco Ferreri‘s The Flesh (1991), at 10:15 PM ET, on Tubi (so no subscription required) via Kast.tv (free account required). As always, the link to join will drop here, on Facebook, and on Twitter around 10 PM.

Also, you can vote for this year’s Weirdcademy Awards once per day up until March 27. Big (though not prohibitive) favorites are already emerging in a couple of categories (Weirdest Picture and Weirdest Actress), but other races remain tight.

Speaking of the Weirdcademy Awards, we added a new page of “More Site-Specific Weird Stuff.” Currently, the only thing here is the full list of all Weirdcademy Awards winners by year going back to the Awards’ debut in 2010, but we do plan on slowly adding new content in there.

And speaking of voting on stuff, the latest round of our Apocrypha Promotion poll is still ongoing throughout this weekend, in case you haven’t voted yet.

And speaking of Apocrypha promotion, next week Shane Wilson complicates that field with a newly-approved candidate. You’ll have to wait to see what it is for sure, but keyword hints include “Eiffel Tower” and “lizard men.” Gregory J. Smalley follows up with a report on William Greaves’ 60s experiment Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One (1968), which may not be quite as strange as its tongue-twisting title, but comes close. Onward and weirdward!
