WEIRD HORIZON FOR THE WEEK OF 12/24/2021

366 Weird Movies may earn commissions from purchases made through product links.

Our weekly look at what’s weird in theaters, on hot-off-the-presses DVDs and Blu-rays (and hot off the server VODs), and on more distant horizons…

Trailers of new release movies are generally available at the official site links.

IN THEATERS (LIMITED RELEASE):

Memoria (2021): Read Gregory J. Smalley’s Apocrypha Candidate review. hears odd noises as she travels from town to town. Opening at the IFC Center in NYC on the 26th, but the rest of the schedule has not been posted yet: we expect it will be up on theatrical distributor Neon’s official site by the time you read this, or soon thereafter.

IN DEVELOPMENT (post-production):

The Northman (2022): Robert Eggers‘ upcoming Viking feature can best be described as “Conan” meets “Hamlet.” Unfortunately, we get the feeling it’s not going to be half as weird as his previous film.  In his interview with IGN he does say “Is it still a Robert Eggers movie and is there some weird shit? Absolutely,” but that’s a caveat in the context of a conversation about this being his most mainstream film. We’ll still check it out. Read the entire interview and catch the trailer.

CANONICALLY WEIRD (AND OTHER) REPERTORY SCREENINGS:

This section will no longer be updated regularly. Instead, we direct you to our new “Repertory Cinemas Near You” page. We will continue to mention exceptional events in this space from time to time, however.

FREE ONLINE WEIRD MOVIES ON YOUTUBE:

Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny (1972): Read the Canonical entry. No, we’re not promoting Seasonal Affective Depressive Disorder with this offering of the crappy Christmas movie about Santa telling the kids about a bad high school production of “Thumbelina” while his  sled is stuck in the sand Florida. This is the Rifftrax version, with jokes to carry you through the madness. Watch Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny (Rifftrax version) free on YouTube.

WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE: We’re still trying to decide whether to host a weird watch party on New Years’ Day or postpone it until January 8th; add your thoughts here (if we get two more votes for January 1, we’ll go ahead).

Next week, we’ll have the results of our first Apocrypha Promotion poll (you still have until the 27th to get your votes in), and we’ll set up tiebreakers if needed, or move on to the next round of challenges if not. It’s also time for our year-end top 10 lists, both the weirdest and the version where we let conventional movies compete. And we aren’t promising anything, but there may be a review (or even two) from the reader-suggested review queue thrown in there as well. Merry Christmas (or pagan holiday of your choice), and onward and weirdward!

What are you looking forward to? If you have any weird movie leads that we have overlooked, feel free to leave them in the COMMENTS section.
