Suggest a Weird Movie!

Please do not ask “what was that movie?” questions on this page. We set up an entire site here to answer those questions. This page is for suggesting movies to be reviewed.

Know a weird movie? Something strange that glued you to the screen with awe, amazement or reverence, while your more mundane minded friends left the room (or theater) in boredom, confusion or disgust? A movie whose omission from a list of the 366 weirdest movies of all time would offend you on a personal level? Something even I haven’t heard of or considered? There are potentially thousands of forgotten films, critically dismissed films, foreign or independent films that never got a proper release, or misplaced oddities hiding out there that may deserve a place at the table. One man can’t be expected to track them all down. Here is the place to mention those treasured curios that no one else seems to have even heard of. Nominate a movie in the suggestion box and I’ll move it up on my review queue, or at the very least, explain why I’m not going to review it.

NOTICE: The “Suggest of Weird Movie!” feature has become a victim of its own success.  At the time of this update, we have about 250 reader suggestions (!) in queue. (More than that since I last updated the page)! Since we can only do 1 or maybe 2 reviews a week, be aware there may be a huge delay—currently, possibly over a year!—between the time you make a suggestion and the point at which it’s actually reviewed.  I considered shutting down the suggestion box as of 2011, but I decided to let you keep your suggestions coming (if nothing else, it tells us what types of movies readers are interested in seeing reviews of). Just be aware that when you make a suggestion, it may not receive the promptest of attention. The best you can really hope for at this point is to bring something to our attention that we might have overlooked. (Also note that although we prioritize the earliest nominations later suggestions may get reviewed before earlier ones if they receive a re-release on DVD or Blu-ray, or interest us for our own inscrutable reasons).

If you can’t wait for one of our staff to review your movie, why not review it yourself and submit it to us via the contact form?  We can’t swear we’ll publish every submission we receive, but we want reader participation and we are fairly liberal.

All serious suggestions will receive a response, as well as all most non-serious ones.

  4. Hello, I was reluctant to suggest this at first because of the lack of availability, but catching up on the website I thought “eh, why not?”

    Seems to be available only on film festivals, I managed to watch it on Fantaspoa a few months back.

    What it seems to be is about an ongoing war between two robot-like civilizations, but really it is a largely incomprehensible non-linear futuristic surrealist sci-fi 3D animation made by one single guy.

    Frank Perry’s “The Swimmer” which I believe was based on a Cheever short story.
    Or maybe for your “kinda unusual but weird enough” list. lol

  9. The Little Mermaid/Malá Morská Víla (dir. Karel Kachyňa, 1976)

    A rather faithful adaptation of the original Hans Christian Andersen fairytale. Notable for discarding the traditional look for the mermaids, its somber tone and the dreamlike atmosphere for a lot the underwater scenes.

    Abstract film with minimal dialogue and elaborate costuming, mostly remembered for the soundtrack by Magma. Gave me similar vibes to The Colour of Pomegranates

    I’ve read on Germany’s biggest digital news platform that the film looks as if Jean Cocteau filmed Fritz Lang’s Metropolis using modern-day videoclip aesthetics. Plus, Björk provided additional dialogue, and Balenciaga’s muse Renata Litvinova plays one of the leads.

    The first movie musical to be made in Lithuania, Arunas Zebriunas’s 1974 rock opera adapts Kazys Boruta’s folkloric tale of an angel turned impish demon who falls to earth and causes havoc among the mortals. Heavily inspired by Jesus Christ Superstar which was released a few years prior.

    1. That’s a Sundance title we were iffy on, but it’s hard to tell by a short synopsis and sometimes weird stuff sneaks in. It will be released on Amazon Prime later this year, so we’ll try to look at it as a new release when it comes out.

  19. How about Once Upon a Time in Anatolia? Excellent movie, perhaps a bit shy in the weirdness department, but pretty unusual. They don’t make many movies about wind.

  22. The Other Side of the Underneath 1972

    A therapist looks into the mind of a woman diagnosed as schizophrenic and finds, not madness, but tortured sexual guilt created by the taboos of society. members of the Holocaust Theatre Company appear in the film. It is the only British feature film in the 1970s to be solely directed by a woman. The title of the film is taken from a line in the director’s play Vagina Rex and the Gas Oven, which was a huge success at the London Arts Lab in 1969. It is an adaptation of her 1971 play A New Communion for Freaks, Prophets and Witches.

Meatcleaver Massacre: poorly titled disasterpiece that is much, much more than it suggests and depicts, including a grafted-on prologue and epilogue by Christopher Lee from an entirely different film! It follows a college professor who, after several of his disgruntled students murder his family and leave him permanently disabled, invokes a Gaelic demon to enact revenge.

  29. This is isn’t a weird movie, but Channel 366 programming: John from Cincinnati. Whether it’s prime time on the channel or not depends on your definition of ‘weird’, but it does have a messianic idiot savant figure whose arrival to a surfing community causes levitations, resurrections, spontaneous combustion of piercings and heroin to lose its ability to cause withdrawal symptoms.

I will say I was surprised to look and see “Matango” wasn’t already there, I assumed it was.

  42. I’ve been looking for a copy of the film Public Ghost #1 starring Charley Chase for several years now, but have thus far been unsuccessful. Has anyone else seen it? It inlcudes the song “I’m a Spooky,” which is the main reason I’m searching for the thing. Thanks.

  44. Don’t know if this film has ever been suggested but I would say Warren Beatty‘s Dick Tracy (1990) is comic book adaptation that I find incredibly strange. After Warren Beatty won an oscar for Reds, the fact his next directorial effort is this colorfully gonzo film about a comic strip character from the 30’s is crazy. Half of the cast is covered in crazy prosthetics, and it feels like Toontown levels of chaos from Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

    If that’s not weird enough I do think how Warren Beatty has kept the rights to Dick Tracy are much weirder relics. Warren Beatty has the rights to character, and believes that he will get to make a sequel, but every once in a while he will create these tv specials for TCM that will air one time, so he can keep the rights for a period of time. These feel like unintentional adult swim skits that happened to be made by an Oscar winner. It’s a fascinating watch. Links below.

  45. Don’t know if this film has been suggested before but I would say Warren Beatty’s Dick Tracy (1990) is an incredibly strange film. To me, it’s close to style and spirt to Speed Racer (2008), a color assault to the eyes, and half the cast is covered in garish makeup. The fact that this is Warren Beatty next directed effort after winning an Oscar for Reds is wild.

    If that’s not weird enough, I would say check out his Dick Tracy tv specials that were aired only once, that feel more in line with an adult swim short, than a special that aired on TCM. These specials were only made so Beatty can retain the rights, and to me, they are even weirder than the film.

  47. Possible film, Silent Night Deadly Night 4: Initiation. While the first three were dumb slashers, this one adds in misandrists cults, creepy bug stuff, and has absolutely nothing to do with the original. Directed by Society’s own Brian Yuzna.
