PLANNING SEPTEMBER’S NETFLIX PARTY

We’re ready to take suggestions and votes in the comments for our August Netflix Weird Watch party, scheduled for Saturday, September 11 at 10:15 PM ET.

If you’d like to attend our watch party, then the important thing is to RSVP in the comments, where you can make a screening suggestion, or just say you plan to be there. As always, we’re looking for five likely attendees before officially scheduling.

The Canonically Weird movies on Netflix that we haven’t yet screened yet are Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion (1997), Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010). (Netflix is losing catalog titles at an alarming rate, replacing them with “exclusive” content). Feel free to nominate any of these, or ignore them in favor of other selections.

To participate, you’ll need a U.S. Netflix account, a Chrome-based browser, and the TeleParty (formerly “Netflix Party”) extension.

Okay, now join us in discussion in the comments.

  1. The Signal, sci-if thrills from 2014. From IMDb:

“On a road trip, Nic and two friends are drawn to an isolated area by a computer genius. When everything suddenly goes dark, Nic regains consciousness – only to find himself in a waking nightmare.”

It doesn’t have David Bowie’s codpiece though. At least as far as I know…

    1. Having seen “the Man Who Fell to Earth”, that was all David Bowie.

I’m going with “Enter the Florpus” again.

  2. How to choose? I haven’t seen Labyrinth as an adult, but hackers AND aliens? I’m going to have to throw in for The Signal.

  3. Currently 2 votes for either Labyrinth or The Signal, so the next commenter could cast the deciding vote (or could make things even more confusing if they prefer).

On another note, I got an offer from the director of Strange Frame to sit in on a screening of that and answer questions, so I told him if people wanted we would do that for the second September party instead of an Amazon Prime film. The movie is on Tubi right now but apparently there is a way to host a watch party there as well. Comments on that proposal are welcome, too.

    1. I’d be interested in that.

And I’d watch Florpus, Codpiece, Pilgrims, or the movie I brought up. Open to whatever.

  4. I’ll nominate I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore again. The title alone speaks to me. I would also put a vote in to view Strange Frame, but don’t know that I would want to get rid of the Prime viewing, as they have so many good weird movies.

    1. I guess I’ll throw my weight behind “the Signal” (apologies to Mr Bowie), and say that I’d be happy to join an extra viewing for the “Strangeframe” Guy experience.

  5. “The Signal” seems to be winning, but votes can still come in through the week.

We are going to tentatively schedule a special “Strange Frame” viewing with a live Q&A for the following week (Sep. 18) at the usual time (10:15 PM ET). The film is on Tubi TV so it will require a different software setup. Details in the future.
