APRIL AMAZON PRIME WATCH PARTY NOMINATIONS THREAD

Our next Weird Watch Party on Amazon Prime is scheduled for Apr. 24 at 10:15 PM.

As always, we’ll be looking for nominations from people who plan to attend. After we get the minimum five nominations and likely attendees, we’ll put up a poll. Management will break any ties. We’re open to suggestions for different starting times, dates, or methods of propagating the watch link.

Amazon Prime’s catalog of movies is larger (and less exclusive) than Netflix’s. Ed Dykhuizen’s availability spreadsheet is a good resource to check for Canonically Weird movies (look for ones marked “free w/ Prime” in the “Amazon” column). Or, do your own research and come up with a title from Amazon. Eligible movies will have a “watch party” button on their Amazon page. You must be a Prime subscriber; you don’t have to download an extension or additional software.

When the party is set to begin we’ll announce it in three places:

  • On this site (if you’ve signed up for regular email alerts via the sidebar you’ll also get a notice that way)
  • On our Facebook page
  • On Twitter

Make your nominations in the comments below.

  1. I propose…

Voyage of the Rock Aliens (1984, USA)

Directed by James Fargo (The Enforcer, Every Which Way But Loose).

Starring Pia Zadora (Butterfly, The Lonely Lady, Santa Claus Conquers the Martians), Craig Sheffer (A River Runs Through It, Some Kind of Wonderful, Night Breed), and Tom Nolan (School Spirit, Fast Times at Ridgemont High)

    A sci-fi musical comedy.

Devo-knockoff aliens take their guitar-shaped spaceship to Earth looking for the source of rock & roll and meet “Beach Party”-knockoffs Dee Dee, a singer at Speelburgh High School, and her asshole boyfriend, Frankie, leader of rockabilly band The Pack. When Frankie won’t let Dee Dee sing with his band, the alphabetically-named aliens form a band of their own so their leader, ABCD (Absid), can steal her heart. They better watch out because the town sheriff don’t take kindly to strangers and is hot on their trail. Who will win the battle-of-the-bands? Who will win Dee Dee’s affections? Will the tentacled lake monster catch any of the locals? Will the escaped chainsaw killer find love? Will Frankie’s sad pet cougar help him learn “The Nature of the Beast”? And what’s up with that post-apocalyptic music video featuring Jermaine Jackson (The Jackson Five, brother of Michael Jackson) at the start of the film?

Also featuring Rhema (a one-time Christian band from Arizona turned blatant Devo ripoff), Ruth Gordon (Harold and Maude, Rosemary’s Baby), Michael Berryman (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, The Hills Have Eyes), and the voice of Peter Cullen (voice of The Transformers’ Optimus Prime).

  2. Roger Egbert says of the movie I nominated

“ “Teeth” sinks its incisors into a cross-cultural myth known as vagina dentata. Or, as Juno might call it, “Vaggie D.” Depending on who you ask (not that you should bring it up in polite intercourse), it is said to represent the male fear of castration and of feminine sexuality in general. It also symbolizes the woman’s anxieties about penetration, and/or her desire to devour her mate, who is attempting to fulfill his own bio-mythological destiny by returning upstream to spawn in the womb from whence he originated. (Or, as the movie puts it, “the dark crucible that hatched him.”)”

He titled his review When vaginas attack!

Is what Roger Ebert said still relevant?
I’m old and I still look up what he says about older movies.

    1. Sure, Ebert is always relevant. He’s a kind of taste touchstone. I also reviewed Teeth:

      Teeth
isn’t a triumph, but nor is it a disaster—which is a real problem for critics when trying to discuss a movie that offers so many opportunities for dentition related puns. You can’t imagine how many reviewers were secretly hoping this movie would be a disaster so that they could be the first to quip “Teeth bites” or “the rotten Teeth should be yanked.” – https://366weirdmovies.com/capsule-teeth-2007/

I wouldn’t object to seeing it again.
