2015 MARCH MAD MOVIE MADNESS: LIST CANDIDATE TOURNAMENT, ROUND 3

Went to sleep last night and 16-seed Southland Tales was on the ropes. Woke up this morning, and it had stormed back to defeat heavy favorite A Field in England. This tournament is weird.

At any rate, we’re headed into round 3 of our List Candidate tournament; the prize for the winner is a spot on the final list of the 366 Best Weird Movies of All Time. We’re now into the Sweet Sick-steen, with the contestants competing for advancement into the Ill-ete Eight. (Aren’t we cute?) Go ahead and vote for your favorites below.

This round ends Thursday, Mar. 26 at 11:59 U.S. Eastern Standard Time.

  1. Hmm, I can see how some early voters may have watched only one of the movies in a match, so early voting may be biased towards the more well known movie while last minute voters who have taken the time to see both can then in some cases reverse this bias. This could explain for instance the last minute reversal in Aegri Somnia vs. World on a Wire and perhaps The Hourglass Sanatorium vs. Singapore Sling, but can it explain the last minute success of Southland Tales? Is A Field in England really more well known than Southland Tales (Under the Skin is of course)?

  2. I honestly believe that someone must be cheating in these reader polls. It seems that there’s always a bunch of last minute votes for many of the rarely seen (and much lower quality) films. Just look at some of the films that won the last poll!

These votes always seem to come last minute and often topple heavy favourites which were winning by a large margin the night before.

    1. I have my suspicions that there may be something to what you say, Steven. But, there is actually no way to “cheat” in the poll. It’s merely a popularity contest, and we’ve only included movies that already have a strong argument to make the List. If fans of a particular movie care enough to organize a campaign to “cheat,” then more power to them—I respect their passion. The last minute thing is very strange, however. But then again it means someone cares enough to pay attention to the deadlines…

  3. Well, if someone wants to campaign, it does make sense to do it last minute. Because if you don’t then some supporter of the other entry in the match may do the same thing in return, while as long as it seems like their favourite is winning they probably won’t.

  4. You can cheat if “one vote per day” is considered a rule, which I assumed it was. The poll only remembers cookies. A person could use incognito windows to easily vote several times in a row. I’m sure this has been happening.
