We received enough requests to help people remember the names of movies based on brief memories that we decided to start a page dedicated to the concept.
As a heads up, I find that the badmovies.org “What Was That Film” board can be the best place to ask these sorts of questions, particularly if the film your looking for is in the horror or science fiction genres. It may be a good idea to ask there as well.
In March 2012, we cleared out the “solved” movies to save space on the page (explaining the gaps in the numbering).
The latest request comes from a reader named “alan.” I reprint his question here as “Movie 1″. Barry Jones sounds confident that this is Robin Hardy‘s The Fantasist.
MOVIE 1
I saw a movie once, definitely a Psychological Thriller, something from the early eighties (or late seventies) which was about some girl who ends up with a guy who is a murderer. She bluffs her way out of a certain death. A scene follows that is really something else! She has sex with him (almost explicit scene, but more intensely erotic). At the end of the film she kicks the fellow overboard (leaving a leg prothesis behind). Sounds weird?? Well, I know!
There is also an unsolved movie from a prior post, from “John,” that I’ll include here in case in rings a bell for someone:
MOVIE 2
Starts in Heaven. God is going to destroy the world. Instead He sends an angel down. Angel takes the form of a dog then water then wind … ‘Angel’ helps a young film maker. Helps him make a film but it is not a commercial success. Final scene is the film is projected onto a sheet in the Notre Dame in Paris.
I have been searching for three years for the answer!
The latest mystery movie. Not much to go on.
MOVIE 4
Strange, supernatural things happen to a family in a tower block. Near the end of the movie in a plaza sitting in a circle are a group of people trying to decide who to curse next. She’s absolutely confident that it’s East Asian.
One from Zelenc. Morgan seems pretty sure this is Jodorowsky’s The Rainbow Thief:
MOVIE 5
…a surreal movie when in I think first or one of the first scenes a baron or something invites his parents to dinner and dogs eat with them at a table… dogs are served caviar and guests bones, than guests became angry and leave i think… couldn’t find this one, it’s a comedy…
This is going to be a hard one because Mike M. only remembers one scene, and there’s nothing outrageous about it.
MOVIE 9
I saw this around thirty-something years ago, age 6-7, and not sure if it was on TV or maybe at the drive-in.
Only one scene stuck with me: a young boy about 7-10 in bathing trunks, running around the pool of a hotel, no guests around. Two to five men in black suits and sunglasses are after the boy, not running but walking and not saying anything. The boy goes into the pool, the men follow after, grab the boy, and push him under until he’s drowned. They then calmly leave the scene.
From Jo. Ubermolch suggests In the Mouth of Madness (1994). Maybe.
MOVIE 10
There was a man & Woman driving, looking to get to their destination, but kept ending up back in the same town. They couldn’t seem to get out of it.At one point the woman got out of the car & got attacked by a tree. They went to get help from the Police, then the police tried to kill them. They were also running down a Alley & there was a time portal.
From The Awful Dr. Orloff. I originally marked this Solved! with the suggestion The Wild East [Dikiy vostok], but the Dr. has returned to say he still has his doubts, so I restored the description in case anyone has any further thoughts.
MOVIE 11
saw this film many years ago at the Edinburgh Film Festival. At the time you could get a cheap season ticket that let you into any film showing before the main evening screenings, which meant that people like me could at no extra cost risk watching a couple of hours of almost certain rubbish in a near-empty cinema when all the sensible movie connoisseurs were having lunch.
I’ve repeatedly tried to convince people that I saw this film, but nobody believes me. Basically it’s an Eastern European remake of “The Magnificent Seven”, subtitled of course, with all the beleaguered villagers played by dwarves and midgets. They live in a vaguely post-apocalyptic village obviously built in a quarry. When the bandit problem ensues, the heroic midget goes off to hire a bunch of heroes, and somehow ends up with a strange bunch of historically mismatched tough guys (yes, I know this is exactly what happens at the end of “Time Bandits” – I presume the idea was stolen from there), including a totally anachronistic Japanese in full samurai armour – a subtle nod to Kurosawa!
Anyway, the action veers erratically between the various source movies and “Mad Max” before the heroes are temporarily thrown off-balance by the arrival of a considerable number of unexplained fully-costumed Nazis in half-tracks (presumably the local WWII reenactment society came cheap), but luckily the day is ultimately saved when the heroic dwarf suddenly descends into “Star Wars” territory and in some mystic fashion is granted a magic dagger (obviously purchased via the small-ads in a heavy metal mag) and thus the bad guy is slain and everything’s tickety-boo. Or whatever.
As you can see, I remember more about this movie than most of your inquirers do; it’s just that it sank so totally without trace (not without reason) that nobody else does. I promise you I’m not making it up – has anybody else in the world actually seen it?
From Casey. Sunbear suggests Casey might be thinking of Eyes Wide Shut, but I’m not sure that’s a good fit overall.
MOVIE 14
I watched a movie a few years ago, and can’t for the life of me remember what it’s called. I actually don’t remember a lot about it, but I’m pretty sure it was considered a horror movie. Honestly, when I first remembered it today, I thought it was The Serpent And The Rainbow because that movie feels very similar to it, I think. The guy(s?) goes into this house (I keep wanting to say it was a weird whorehouse, but my memory might be serving me wrong there) and through all these rooms and in all of them are different visually bizarre things. Lots of them sexual. Something about someone maybe having bird feathers? It was really trippy and I think there were parts in it that had to do with voodoo. I think there was some off-kilter sex scenes in it, too, but I could be mistaken. It was made in, I think, the 70′s or 80′s. I’m pretty sure I rented it from a video store. It reminded me a lot of David Lynch and Stuart Gordon’s movies. Any idea?
From Jennifer. Dementia/Daughter of Horror (1955) seems a likely match.
MOVIE 15
I’ve been looking for this movie for years. If I remember correctly, I saw it on PBS in 1993 during the time of the OJ chase, I think I kept switching between the two. For some reason I think it’s a late 80′s or early 90′s film. It’s in black and white, except for some red blood at the beginning. I think someone was murdered in a office. It also had no dialogue, except for an apartment scene where the TV was going. It had a very powerful music soundtrack, very tense. I thought I recognized the composer’s name in the credits, but don’t remember the name. There was a woman wandering around an abandon town or maybe she was being stalked or something. I think at the end she went into a big warehouse-type building and there was something up in the rafters or by some upper windows. I’d really appreciate any ideas.
From Len. L. Rob suggests Louie Malle’s Black Moon (1975); a few things match (teenage girl protagonist), but others don’t (no female lawyer or bathroom electrocution). Mofo Rising seems confident that it’s Vagabond (1985), and the description does seem to match. We’ll leave this up for a while for Len to confirm.
MOVIE 18
I am trying to locate the name of a French film I watched on videotape sometime in the late 1980s/early 90.It was a violent and depressing film that appeared to have been shot in the late 1960s-early 1970s. It was in black and white, I think. The protagonist was a teenage girl trying to escape (something). She hitchhikes around France looking for a place to fit in and people to hustle. She encounters a middle-aged successful woman (a lawyer, maybe?) who seems to harbor affections for her. In a shocking scene, the women is accidentally electrocuted in her bathroom. Later the girl ends up on an almost medieval farm run by a very young couple; the farm is centered on sheep raising.
I can’t remember what happens in the end, though, which is one of the reasons I want to find it again. Overall the movie is quite bleak and hyper-real (a la cinema verite), with no elements of pleasantness or comfort; nevertheless, it remains embedded in my psyche.
From Elise. I have no suggestions; I probably would have been one of the one’s telling her it was The Triplets of Belleville. If she saw a commercial for it, it had to be something that was in fairly wide release.
MOVIE 20
I was a teenager at the time I remember the commercial. It was like this animated movie with this weird song that sounds similar (from what I remember) to Roisin Murphy’s “Ramalama Bang Bang.”
I think I remember overgrown people and like spiraling and tunneling. It was creepy and weird and I always wanted to see it, but I never had the opportunity to. People have told me it was probably The Triplets of Belleville, but I don’t think it was. I’ve seen that movie, and it didn’t remind me of the commercial.
I do remember people singing and they have big heads or maybe the angles are funny.. I don’t know how to describe it. I think I was between 13 and 16 at the time, so the movie had to have come out sometime between 2000 and 2003. Maybe even as late as uhmm… 2005, but I pretty sure it came out before I turned 18.
With nothing but a title and a vague genre to go on, I suggest this one: Phoenix [AKA Ashes and Flames] (1995).
MOVIE 21
I’m looking for a move called like something “The Pheonix” or “Pheonix” … but it definitely has the word Pheonix in the title. It’s kind of a violent/horror/psychological thriller … my uncle said it was kind of weird but who knows at what point (he rarely watches weird stuff…).
From “Tony” via email:
MOVIE 25
This was a movie that I saw in a small movie theater in Brooklyn,New York back around 1972 through 1976. It was the second movie of a double bill about Witchcraft / Devil Worship.
I don’t remember if it was American of Foreign (probably British) and don’t remember if there were any major Movie Stars in it. I only remember the basic premise of the movie and how it ended.
This is what I remember of the movie:…. It was about a man who was into Witchcraft or some sore of Devil Worship. He had a son who you never saw throughout the entire movie (until the very end). You only see his eyes through a slit in the door in the course of the movie. The son is locked away in a room in the basement and the man feeds him by sliding his food under the door. During the course of the film, the son begs his father to let him out of the room. Towards the end of the movie, the father is either stabbed or shot in the stomach and he stumbles down the basement steps and he finally unlocks the door where his son is, and you finally see what the son looks like. He has the body of a human, but the head of a goat like in Witchcraft / Satanism.
I know it is not “The Dunwich Horror”, “The Brotherhood of Satan”, The Antichrist”, “The Beast In The Celler” or “The Devil Rides Out” since I have all these movies on DVD already. I also know it is not “The Ghoul” starring Peter Cushing because I have this movie on VHS.
Other Titles People Guessed, But is not the Movie: “Asylum Of Satan”; “Blood On Satan’s Claw”; “The Witching”; “Judgment Day (Mexican)”…..
***A friend also suggested that this movie could have been made earlier that when I saw it in the movie theater and released under a different Title. And then when I saw it in the 1970′s the title was already changed which was done on many occasions especially with Hammer Films…..
Asked by Tasha on another post. I have no suggestion. The description of the actress reminds me of Barbara Steele, but I don’t think she was in any films as a child.
MOVIE 27
I am trying to figure out the name of this movie I watched as a little girl on “Sammy Terry”. The little girl was possessed and she had long black hair and some of the darkest eyes. You would be so frightened by her stare. The part I will never forget is when her mother was laying in the bed and she heard a noise. She rose from the bed looking around the room and didn’t see anything. Then all of a sudden you see this face arise at the end of the bed and the mother screams for her life. Can someone please help me remember the name of the movie?
Posted in another thread by “Saxerio.” Not much to go on here.
MOVIE 28
Someone remember an old movie where the scene was a couple sleeping, and a green trunk appears and starts sucking through woman pants??? I’ve trying so hard to find it, it’s from the 80′s or 70′s.
From James. It obviously sounds a lot like Ringu (1998) or The Ring (2002) but the timeframe is wrong.
MOVIE 29
I have been trying to remember the name of this movie (could even be an episode or segment of a movie) for years and years. I saw it as a kid on MonsterVision and it think it was around 1994 when I saw it, but the film had a late 80′s, early 90′s feel. Some things might be a bit jumbled, but what I can remember is this: VHS video displays strangely appear in movie rental stores and the movie boxes are all black with nothing on them. I think the display itself is just mirrored with no words or images at all (although that might be inaccurate). So, people are oddly compelled to rent this movie even though they have no idea what it is. When they watch the movie, they see themselves getting killed while watching the movie and then they get killed in exactly the same way as they just saw, as if the movie was a vision of their immediate future. Anyway, two people figure this out and try to stop it and I think in the end it turns out to be some kind of messed up experiment (though that could very well be inaccurate).
From vicman. I have no ideas; can anyone help him out?
MOVIE 30
I saw this movie in the 80′s: it was about this family (husband, wife and daughter), somehow the end up in an island where they found a man who lives there alone with his son. This boy was educated with the bible and without any human contact but the father. The boy is kind of a “Jesus”, he can perform “miracles” and other things….
From Morgan. I have no suggestions right now, anyone else?
MOVIE 33
The only time I remember seeing this was on a TV in a video rental store. I had no idea if was a biker film or what, but two scenes stick out. One is where a biker makes love to a woman on his motorcycle while pieces begin to fall apart one by one. The other takes place next to a gas station with old glass gas pumps. Someone either fires a shot at one or causes a pressure build up which sends the pump blasting up from the ground like a rocket. The final areal shot shows the pump whizzing past the camera. Anyone?
Brent needs help with this one, and I have no suggestions. Does the description below ring any bells? Because of the “dinner party” scenariotoastedavalanche suggests The Exterminating Angel, but I’m not sure it’s a great match with the rest of the details Brent provided.
MOVIE 34
It was on the Independent film channel some time ago, I forgot what age I was but it was definitely in the late 90′s like 1996-98. From what I remember it didn’t have much or any dialogue and it took place in two major settings: the first being that of an apartment complex or cheap hotel in which several individuals were staying, and the second setting was that of this dream “dinner party” where each of the individuals (who i assume did not know each other previously to the dream) would appear at this table, the film would have each sequence end with something happening (im not sure all of what happens) and then re-enter this dream dinner from a different characters view point (and i think some of the elements were reoccurring and something would change each time a new characters view would be taken on) I specifically remember in great detail one of the strange happenings that near the end (I think) all the guests are becoming rather distraught and i think out of nowhere someone sitting next to someone takes a stake knife and stabs it threw their neighbors hand and at that moment several hands bang on the windows in the background and shortly after the final character is woken, then the ending scene is all or most of the individuals exiting their rooms walking to this car ( i think the car is smoking) and in the cars trunk is either a dead body or a deer carcass.
“Zander Seven” is looking for the name of a direct-to-DVD erotic vampire movie/musical from the early 2000s. I’m afraid I don’t have a clue, anyone?
MOVIE 34
…[a] straight to dvd, erotic vampire movie in the vein of Zalman King….. It had a really cool Industrial Metal Techno soundtrack that played during the movie….when the songs would start playing, the artist and song titles would pop up during various scenes in the movie….it was like watching a music video during the movie. I remember watching it in the Fall of 2004….rented it with girlfriend at the time…..very cheesy vampire erotica in the vein of Zalman King, but I recall the Industrial music being decent.
Sterling asks about an erotic thriller involving perfume and possible lesbianism. I don’t have a clue; anybody?
MOVIE 36
The movie is from the 90′s I believe. It’s a psychodrama/erotic thriller/ suspense type. Anyway, it’s about a woman who owns/operates a cosmetic or perfume company. After deliveries of the perfume to women she is then killed (I think with the bottle itself being sharp or something) and I think doused in the fragrance. Cops/detectives think it may be the delivery guy but in the end it appears it was this woman’s assistant or something like that. A woman kind of lesbian’ish air it seemed. She wanted to frame this woman or destroy the company for some reason. Cops tried following the delivery patterns and who was to get it next. I think California based setting.
From “Miradoniz.” Mofo Rising/Rob convincingly suggests this is the adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut’s Harrison Bergeron produced by Showtime in 1995.
MOVIE 37
I’ve seen this film as a child, I was very impressed by it and I don’t know its name!
It’s about a world where people wore some headbands to inhibit the functions of their brains; they were stupid but happy, intelligence was illegal. A boy, the day before he was supposed to get a lobotomy because he was too intelligent, is taken to a prostitute to experience “pleasure” and she … plays chess with him! The police comes, I’m not sure what happens next. At some point someone takes control over the city’s radio station and plays Beethoven and other not so stupid and forbidden works, talks about art etc. He is “defeated” but then commits suicide at a live TV show! After his death (who is considered very “cool” by a lot of teenagers) children would gather in their rooms and secretly would get their headbands down thus continuing what that man was trying to do for them.
From “Yaki.” the description isn’t an exact match but it has a lot of similarities with MirrorMask.
MOVIE 38
Sorry for my bad Engish.
I watched this film a long time ago. Probalby when I was 4-7 years old. And the movie is completely surreal. I’m not sure does the name of the film have word ”mask” or ”diary” (by the way, it’s not movie where Jim Carry is) or a horror movie. I will describe the parts I remember the most. There is some emo chick in the movie that haves a disease and her mother (I think she is in the weels) and she lives in the skyscaper. She haves some white mask. I think she enters her dreamworld and walks in some weird city. There are some weird toothpick men that are grey faceless with no arms and the girl was on the floor. They were all connected together. They can talk and they pick up the girl and left her somewhere infront of some big weird brown door. She enters the building and she finds some creepy witch woman who gives her some tea. Creepy woman had some animal and the chick tried to pet it but the animal was angry on her and the pet ran away. After that, there was some weird man with a part of rectangle and sirqle (the mask was black and white) and with sirqle eyes and mouth like bracket. (White eye was on the black side and black eye was on the white side). He was wearing a white dress with long sleeves and he had thongs (on the feet).
He leed the chick somewhere. Then the chick visited some crystal room and there was some woman there and she was telling a story about whire queen how she was sleeping or something. She told her that she must find a key. Then some huge sand people (one was man and another was a woman) were holding hands together. The sand giant gave a box witch has a key in it. They were flying. The sand woman couldn’t hold the hand anymore with the sand man and she feel on the floor and she was destroyed. Emo chick was walking next to mirror and she saw herself with someone in her room. They were kissing together. The emo chick was mad and started knock on the mirror. In the end, weird man leeds her to the door where is her mask (witch is probably white.). The chick opens the door and she was about to put mask on her face but her negative side took her mask and she put the mask on her face, then she woke up. She watched from the skyscaper the sunset with someone.
A real toughie from B Donnybrook.
MOVIE 39
I was hoping somebody might know of two very obscure films that I watched at a film festival in Toronto maybe twenty years ago. It was done by a DaDa artist that also was famous for produced interesting collage artwork. There were two black and white short films-the first was nothing more than the image of a stone angel statue with music. The second film was also very experimental, with repeated, cut-up images of a heroine from a silent film that looked to be from the 1920′s…indeed..very obscure….
Gary is looking for the names of three short films he thinks he saw on the A&E Network. These should be challenging; hopefully someone else caught them and can help him.
MOVIE(S) 44
I am looking for three very surreal short films that really made a heavy footprint on my mind. As I recall, I saw them on A&E several decades ago.
The first featured a writer living below someone who constantly threw buckets of water out the window above. He had a deadline but couldn’t write because of the distraction. Finally he got past his writer’s block and could write, till she died and the water stopped. Then, he couldn’t write. He ended up paying someone to be upstairs throwing water out the window.
The second featured a family and culture where everyone was very hostile and carried guns. The whole family threatened to shoot each other constantly. Finally, I think the teen son killed both mom and dad.
The third featured a young man walking along a dirt road beside an open meadow. He stepped in a hole and was stuck. Every time it looked like he would be saved, something bad happens. Something chews on his leg as he sinks further into this small hole, ending (dead) with one foot sticking up. A bum comes along and takes the tape out of the man’s Walkman and puts his own in. He then measures the shoe on the remaining foot and takes it off for himself. The foot vanished down the hole. More details available.
We did so well with his first mystery movie that Stewart has another challenge for us. I have no clue; anybody?
MOVIE 45
I was a sucker for all that Erik Von Daniken “ancient aliens seeding Earth” stuff when I was 9 or ten years old. One night (probably 1973-1975-ish) the BBC screened a film/ trailer/ pilot where an American West Coast journalist character seeks out ancient sites and followed clues which eventually lead him to a cave out in the desert somewhere. I think it ended with him finding silver discs with strange carvings on them.
I keenly watched out for the follow up series as my years drifted into my teens. The series never materialised on this side of the pond as far as I know and I havent a clue what the film/ pilot/ series was called.
I almost forgot to update this one, asked by Tess. All I can think of is that the song “I’m a Little Teapot” was used in two Stephen King adaptations—Rose Red and Storm of the Century—but I don’t think either of them match the rest of your memories. Can anyone help Tess?
MOVIE 46
I last saw it when I was just a child. I remember the world was split or divided into a world of darkness and a world of light. The darkness world had landmines in the sky and it was always stormy and they looked like vikings. The day side of the world looked normal and the people still rode around in horse pulled carts. I remember the wife being killed to the song “I’m a little teapot” by one of the darkside people who invaded over the border of the two worlds.
I can’t help him, but maybe you can. John wants to know:
MOVIE 47
I’m trying to find a movie I saw in a movie theatre in Berkeley, CA around 1994-1996. It was animated, I don’t think it was a short (maybe an hour long?), maybe European, perhaps mostly silent, artsy/surreal. The main thing I remember is that there were insects that would crawl out from the furniture or something, then disappear again. The insects didn’t have obvious to do with the plot, just a weird, gratuitous, almost subliminal detail.
Parasvati asks about:
MOVIE 47
I can’t find the title of a Japanese horror movie that affected me intensely, which I couldn’t even watch the entirety of– it scared me too much. And now of course, I’m obsessed with it. It has a person walking around in a building of some sort, they look up and see something in the wooden rafters– the camera zooms in very fast to freeze on a horrible-looking ghost up in the rafters. I’m sorry, that’s all I can remember.
Huzefa needs help with an arm-wrestling for women movie:
MOVIE 48
I don’t remember anything except one scene, where three guys and two females are in a remote place (jungle maybe) and its night so one guy takes one women ‘behind the bushes’ now two guys and one gal is left and as one of them tries to take the gal with her the other invites him for an arm wrestling match indicating the winner takes the woman for the night.. as the match commences the earlier man and women from behind the bushes come back to see the match.. finally there is no result but the two players of the match take the two woman and the guy who earlier got the women stays back wondering… !!
Despite the fact that we couldn’t help him the first time Gary is back with another mystery movie, this one with Bruce Dern. We’ve had two independent suggestions for Family Plot (1976). Gary says he doesn’t believe that’s the movie he’s thinking of but admits that he might have crossed two plots.
MOVIE 49
This featured Bruce Dern. It seems as if he played a psychic or clairvoyant who was working with the police to solve a murder that he, himself may have committed. I remember him on a child’s swing set. I also remember a dead woman upside down in the passenger side of the floor of a Volkswagen Beetle. As I recall, the movie was “folded in half” in that it started at both the beginning and the end, and kept jumping back and forth till it ended in the middle, then everything made sense.
From kostas.
MOVIE 50
SOLVED! 4 Rooms (1995)
And also from kostas. He says it’s not Novo (2002).
MOVIE 51
Someone has the same day again and again (AND NO ITS NOT Groundhog Day!) The film ends on a park and was a kind of soft…porno!
A mystery from blue. It’s a short from the 1960s or earlier and I think it’s going to pose quite a challenge.
MOVIE 52
Hi, I’ve wondered for years what the heck it was that I saw-any suggestions appreciated!
It was back in the mid to late 1960′s, when I was between 7 & 10 years old. I think it may have been part of a short film festival that was a special event at the Pacific National Exhibition (a local summer fair) that my Grandmother always took me to. I’m sure it wasn’t a full length movie. It was a dark, grim story which I believe may have been about a little girl wearing old-fashioned clothes and a doll. I think it was in black and white and possibly silent as well. (?) The scene I remember the most is the doll being lost or abandoned at the bottom of a cliff at the edge of the sea. I think it may have been thrown over the cliff by the girl, landing on the beach. I seem to have a memory of it falling through the air as well as it being on the beach. The scene was filmed looking down from the top of the cliff where there was an ornate iron railing right along the edge. I know it isn’t a lot to go on, but the image of the dark sheer cliffs and the small white doll on the black beach has stayed with me for most of my life. It would be great to solve the mystery…
Another mystery from Gary. Shoot… I thought I had this one for a moment but then I realized the date is way off. Ping! stars “Incredible Hulk” Lou Ferrigno as a dogcatcher—but it wasn’t made until 2000. Can anyone think of a similar movie from the 70s era?
MOVIE 53
This was probably in the 70′s, too. It’s about a boy and his dog. The dog gets picked up by a cruel and very muscle-bound dog catcher. The kid spends the movie trying to get his dog back (which he does and the bad guy gets his in the end). I don’t remember much else but that the dog catcher was huge like a body builder. I showed this as an ARMY projectionist decades ago. Anyone remember this movie?
From “Alex.”
MOVIE 54
I’m looking for a 60s or 70s underground dark bohemian movie….I remember the cover (that I saw on Allmovie looking for another movie) had 2 characters, one man and one woman, dressed up like for a funeral or something (black and white I believe). The title was short….like maybe 2 or 3 words and if my memory is right, the title had the word “crow” or “raven” or the name of a bird in it (not 100% sure though). But for the rest, I’m sure.
Kayra needs help finding a silent film with a bald winged man. It could be The Bat (1926) or The Bat Whispers (1930) but I don’t remember any tinting in those.
MOVIE 55
I remember seeing a film, an early silent chaplin-esque one, with a bald winged man/creature in it. the chaplinish guy was trying to run away from it, then the mist on floor would become red and we’d see him losing his arm. later, his whole lower body. does anyone remember something like that?
If you have weird movie memories of your own that you can’t place, mention them in the comments and we’ll see if someone here can help.

I’m thinking #2 is likely Videodrome (plot synopsis). #1 Sounds like it could be a Twilight Zone episode.
Help from badmovies.org (see the thread here):
Suggestions for #1: Either a Twilight Zone/Outer Limits TV episode, or Frank Capra’s Lost Horizon (1937). I would guess Alex is remembering Lost Horizon; if not, it’s something based on the same concept.
For #2: Three different people suggested this may be Remote Control (1988), but I still think it could be Videodrome.
Thankyou heaps for that mate, it is Lost Horizon and Remote Control! Very weird and cool movies at the same time, kept in my memory for years! Thankyou heaps!
The film is The Fantasist, directed by Robin Hardy (of Wicker Man fame)
Film is definitely The Fantasist, if Alan is reading this, here’s the big scene: the killer forces the Irish heroine to strip and to pose in a re-enactment of a famous painting (Francois Boucher’s portrait of Louise O’Murphy), lying face down, naked. He then proceeds to use her bare buttocks as a makeshift drum set, beating out his own bizzare drum solo on her body. While this film is not exactly a lost classic, it definitely deserves better exposure – though frequently cheesy and amateurish, it has a strange atmospheric undercurrent not unlike Hardy’s other more famous offering. For anyone interested here is an excellent review:

Seek it out if you can.
Sorry, Alan, I haven’t a clue. Does this description ring a bell for anyone else?
#2 is definitely NOT Videodrome…
LRob, you’re correct, of course… the #2 I was talking about turned out to be Remote Control. The problem is that I removed that description once the movie was solved (and titled another descripTion “Movie 2″), but forgot about the comment; I’ll have to figure out a better way to organize this page!
I once saw a movie when i was in Berlin staying at a hostel. it started with a married couple and their black maid who was stealing from the. Within the first 10 minutes however, the maid & the wife managed to suffocate the husband when trying to subdue him by having the rather large maid sit on his face. They flee and end up in a shanty style town supposedly also for those on the run, ruled by a rather gruesome queen. There is graphic sex & nudity throughout. For the life of me I can’t remember what it was called. I’m fairly sure its a foreign film, but the sound was muted and it may be that the subtitles were simply mistimed with the characters dialogue. Damn strange film! I’ve been trying to find it for over 2 years now with no luck
Pretty sure you’re thinking of Desperate Living. See the link and clip above.
Can anyone help with this one please?
My missus has been going on about this film for months now and it doesn’t ring any bells with me, which is odd as she’s sure we watched it together.
Strange, supernatural things happen to a family in a tower block. Near the end of the movie in a plaza sitting in a circle are a group of people trying to decide who to curse next. She’s absolutely confident that it’s East Asian.
I’m pretty sure that I’m going to kick myself when I find out what it is.
Hi.
Ineed your help, cos i cant find the movie i am searching for……Its a surreal movie when in I think first or one of the first scenes a baron or something invites his parrents to dinner and dogs eat with them at table….dogs are served caviar and guests bones, than guests became angry and leave i think………couldnt find this one it a comedy…thanks for help in advance
I don’t have a clue. Anyone?
holy god there are not a lot of films that include guests getting bones and dogs getting caviar by a table…..now I really dont know where to find it, hope we will find out in near future from someone. Thanks anyway for your time
Got another one:
I saw this long ago, so I can’t remember if it was and old b-horror film, or just a veeery crappy film. Someone’s hand gets cut off, but the hand is alive and goes around cutting off everyone’s hands (I remember something like a hospital scene, with a nurse). I also remember a scene in which lots of hands stood on a tree, between the branches…
I’ts not very specific, but any ideas?
Another possibility: Demonoid: Messenger of Death (1981), with Samantha Eggar. Any of these ring a bell?
There was a second vote for Quicksilver Highway from badmovies.org—that’s two independent sources suggesting it may be your movie, so I would check it out.
If michael cane was in it, it was “The Hand”.
Good try Justin, but it was solved. It’s Quicksilver Highway (see Alvaro’s comment below).
Two possibilities: if it is a much older film, it could be The Beast With Five Fingers. Or, you may simply be thinking of The Hand from 1981 directed by Oliver Stone (seriously) and starring Michael Caine. Both are about severed hands that go on killing sprees. Hopefully this helps Alvero.
Alvaro (got your name right this time) – another possibilty…a Stephen King/Clive Barker collaboration anthology from the early 90′s called “Quicksilver Highway”. Barker’s contribution is called “The Body Politic”. Matt Frewer is in it and much of the havoc the severed hand causes takes place in a hospital. If none of these seem right, I give.
Well guys thanks a lot, I’m pretty sure now it’s the Highway Quicksilver story, because i do remember it being some sort of short film, so it probably was an anthology. I saw a scene on the trailer that actually brings some memories so i’m almost convinced, I’ll have to watch it soon. Thanks for your help, I remember watching that film when I was like 10 really late at night and I was terrified haha.
This is slightly off-topic, because I know what the movie’s called, and it’s been recommended to me at several removes as impeccably weird. The trouble is, I can’t find a copy, or any reliable information at all – even the imdb tells me nothing except the credits.
It’s called “Blood Sword Of The 99th Virgin” (is that the best title ever or what?), it’s Japanese, and allegedly it’s incredibly similar to “The Wicker Man”, only even more bizarre. Also, it was made 14 years earlier.
Can anybody tell me a bit more? It’s always annoying to go to a lot of trouble to track down a really obscure film, only to discover that there’s an excellent reason why it’s obscure. I know the film does exist, but has anybody actually seen it?
I can’t add much. It’s Japanese, from 1959, and not on DVD. Here’s a short positive review (in German) by someone who saw it at a film festival. Google turns up virtually no results.
I have a movie I can’t remember the name of. It was about a dr a surgeon I believe who’s hands had minds of their own and they wanted to be set free. So they ended up convincing the dr to chop off one, the “leader” remains attached to the dr. Soon people were chopping off their hands and you see all these hands running around, writing on the walls in blood “we must be free we must be free”. The dr soon figures in order to stop this he must kill himself and of course the “leader”.
The movie ended with a woman sitting at a vanity. The camera zooms in on her nose…yup you guessed it.
I am sooo note making this up. I saw it on cable one day and thought it was the weirdest thing I’d ever seen!!
If I could find out the name that would be awesome.
This sounds very similar to the previous killer hand movie. Can you rule out Quicksilver Highway (see previous responses)?
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You did it!! You did it!!!!! That’s the movie!! I didn’t know it was like a trilogy thing. I only caught the one about the hands. Now I am going to go find it and download.
Your brain should be on ebay ;)
Thank you!!!!
Don’t buy my brain on EBay, buy Eric G’s. he’s the one who recommended Quicksilver Highway.
I’ll put it on the block for $0.01, so start bidding! I just truly find it, um, weird that 2 people were trying to find out about “Quicksilver Highway” of all things. I remember seeing it on cable way back when but completely forgetting about it until these posts came up. I went through a Clive Barker phase in my late teens so of course I had to see everything he was involved in. Most of all of his film adaptations are horrible and this was no exception. Maybe this is a sign that there should be a severed hand week here at 366 central.
lol ok Eric I’ll start the bidding ;) I am sorry I asked about the same movie I should have read more carefully the previous posts.
To be honest I only saw the story about the hands and that was like 2 yrs ago and I just sat there with my mouth hanging open. I could not believe what I was seeing. I told my co workers and they thought I’d lost my mind! lol It was silly but it did leave, as you can see, a lasting impression.
I’ve downloaded it so I want to see the other stories and see if they are just a nutty and wacky lol
Thanks guys
S.
i saw this movie like 12 years ago on cable. its a witch movie. but its about a girl who knows shes a wtich or discovers that she is. and her mom or her grandmother is also a witch. she likes this guy at school and he cheats on her or something. then the girl starts using the magic for evil and hurting people at school. from what i remember it reminded me of an early mid 80′s early 90′s at most, version of the craft before it got all hollywood and goth. the major scene that stands out is one where the girl and her mother/grandmother are fighting in the kitchen but only yelling and whispering weird spells at each other until sh*t starts happening. i also remember it being like PG13 . like Ride with the Devil. it was good without really showing or doing anyhting
Not everything matches your description but I think Midnight Offerings (IDMB), a 1981 made-for-TV movie starring Melissa Sue Anderson (from “Little House on the Prairie”) and Marion Ross (from “Happy Days”) is a possibility. If anyone else wants to jump in with a suggestion please do.
im pretty sure thats it. i dont know where im sure i got the mother/grandmother washed in with the older more experienced witch. ill have to watch it again. thanks!
im pretty sure thats it. im sure i got the mother/grandmother washed in with the older more experienced witch. ill have to watch it again. thanks!
Happy to help!
Okay, here’s another.
I was strangely fascinated by the scene & it’s been gnawing away at the back of my mind for ages. Any ideas?
I’m afraid that’s going to be a hard one, Mike, but we’ll see if your description rings any bells for anyone.
My Partner see a movie where there was a man & Woman driving, looking to get to their destination, but kept ending up back in the same town. They couldn’t seem to get out of it.At one point the woman got out of the car & got attacked by a tree. They went to get help from the Police, then the police tried to kill them. They were also running down a Alley & there was a time portal.Any ideas?
No guess from me, Jo. Readers?
Well, here’s a tricky one for you!
I saw this film many years ago at the Edinburgh Film Festival.
I haven’t seen it, but a movie called The Wild East [Dikiy Vostok] (1993) matches most of those strange particulars. It’s from Kazakhstan (which could be mistaken for Eastern Europe), it’s a remake of The Seven Samurai, and it features a cast of dwarfs. Could there possibly be a second movie this weird? [UPDATE: See this brief synopsis at The New York Times: it mentions the Mad Max similarity. I'm convinced this has to be your movie.]
The good Dr. hasn’t responded but The Wild East fits his description so perfectly I’m calling this “solved” unless he tells me otherwise.
I have asked many people about this and so far nobody could give me an answer, i am hoping someone here might help.
The story was of a man who was sort of living inside the walls of a woman’s apartment, maybe has wasn’t living inside the walls but i am pretty sure that he had access to her apartment trough the walls. He was pretty much able to freely move around on the inside of the unusually thick walls, observe her and even enter the apartment, using some sort of trap door, when she wasn’t there. I don’t know how but she ended up discovering that he is there observing her, all the sudden he is chasing to kill her, there are walls crashing and there was a scene where something very heavy falls on his hand and chops of his fingers, almost like some sort of guillotine.
Considering that i was very young when I saw this, I was very much disturbed and freaked out by the idea of someone living inside the walls so I can not clearly remember the movie (I might have exaggerated the whole thing) but i am sure about that “fingers chopping/slashing” moment because I still have it in my head some 15 years later. This has been bugging me for a while because, since the time, i have started to pretty much enjoy and appreciate all sort of weird movies and I would love to find and see that one again and just compare the impressions from now and then.
I would say it was an early 90′s movie but again not sure about that.
If anybody has any ideas I would love to hear them. Thanx
Anika: Two possibilities to consider and reject: the first is Bad Ronald (1974), which fits the basic plot but not your time period. The second is Hider in the House (1989), which is closer to your suspected date. I don’t personally know if the finger chopping scene occurs in either of them.
Nope, that is not it. I went trough both and i am sure that it is not what I am looking for.
Anyway, thank you for trying.
Anika,
I’m fairly certain the movie you are thinking of is called Through the Eyes of a Killer (1992) with Richard Dean Anderson (of MacGyver fame). A creepy little TV movie and I recall the trapdoors and specifically a Guillotine room where MacGyver’s hand gets it.
You are right, that is it!
So he was, after all, living inside the walls?!? It will be hard to take it seriously since Richard Dean Andersen is “the bad guy” plus young Marg Helgenberger ( MacGyver and CSI have sort of marked them) but I just have to see it. That guillotine part was haunting me for quite some time as a kid, I desperately want to compare it with the way i have it in my memory. Might be a bit hard to find because it’s a TV movie and it never came out on DVD but at least now I know what I’m looking for.
Thank you very much Eric
Anika,
You’re welcome. I usually never forget any movie I’ve ever seen, even awful TV movies (my mom watched a lot of Lifetime movies when I was growing up)! Along the same lines/theme as this one is a Japanese film called Watcher in the Attic that you might like. Very creepy and weird, but actually very good. Also, 366′s suggestion of Bad Ronald is a TV movie with a good reputation that I’ve always wanted to see. But, again, TV movies usually don’t get a proper DVD release so they are difficult to track down and see. Anyway, glad I could help!
Actually Bad Ronald was not hard to track down, I haven’t gotten around to seeing it just yet but hopefully i will get to it soon. I put Watcher in the Attic first for the time being because usually Japanese films can be quite creepy.
I am also on the look for something about H.H. Holmes but not a real life based story telling because they have it pretty much covered with books and news papers articles, maybe something inspired by or loosely based on the Murder Castle. Just not the classic murder/crime story more like a weird imaginative fiction. I realise it is not a specific movie that i am looking for, just a general plot idea, but I thought I might ask just in case you got any suggestions.
Did the movie ever come out that had a trailer in 2010 about girls in either an orphanage or an asylum? They end up in a video game like setting, or possibly a dream like setting, battling for their lives. Anyone know what this was and/or was it ever released?
Are you sure u didn’t see the trailers for “never let me go” and “tron” during the same set of previews? :P
tangent: I normally hate seeing keira knightly’s messed up face, especially on a very large screen, but i really liked “never let me go”… she didn’t ruin it :)
I’m fairly certain you’re talking about Zack Snyder’s “Suckerpunch“, which will premiere on March 25, 2011.
“tron legacy” *
Any idea?
Maybe Fellini’s Satyricon? There is an excellent and scene through a strange whorehousey kind of place. Very bizarre and sexual haha.
Not a horror film though
Hi, I’ve been looking for this movie for years.
A suggestion: Dementia (1955). Some things fit: black and white, no dialogue, woman wandering around the streets, music by George Antheil (whose name is prominently mentioned in the credits). I don’t know if there was a scene with red blood, and of course the supposed date is way off.
This one was submitted via email:
“I want to know the name of a particular movie that I saw a few years ago. I remember there was a old naked man and it showed a bee flying in (or out) of his penis. It was a very good quality film and I want to say it was like a series of short dreams. There was no talking. It was all very strange and weird. I think there was a scene with a man at a gas station or it was either in a space shuttle. I also want to say that the director made like a trilogy of these types of movies like you know like (Title) I, (Title) II, and (Title) III. I’ve tried Google 4chan, IMDB, and your website, but with no luck. But it was definitely a weird movie.”
Has to be Cremaster 2.
yay, cremaster! i hope someday to read a 366 review of at least part of the cycle, haha. sooooo weird and awesome. it is funny that someone could see cremaster and forget what they were watching since it is such a pain in the butt to get ahold of.
Wow this is great. i need help figuring out what movie this is, its been killing for over a decade- it’s an older film (80′s or earlier) about a vietnam vet that is discharged for some reason (or maybe re assigned) and somehow ends up being the head of some insane asylum. There’s a lot of weird stuff that happens, but all i can remember is him talking to some guy in a space suit. At the end he and his co-worker friend go to a bar where they are harassed by a mixed-sex, bi-sexual biker gang. They make the two guys degrade themselves and then it becomes obvious they are going to get raped. Some guy is trying to force a fellatio on the friend and the main character goes crazy and rages on everyone, kills them all brutally including the women. Last scene is someone in the backseat of a car and opens a letter that holds some some significance. Help?
The Ninth Configuration?
Yes! Thank you!
I am trying to locate the name of a French film I watched on videotape sometime in the late 1980s/early 90s
It was a violent and depressing film that appeared to have been shot in the late 1960s-early 1970s.
Thanks for this chance to track it down!
Sorry, nothing comes to mind. Anyone else want to chime in?
This is “Vagabond” a 1985 film directed by Agnes Varda and now currently in the Criterion collection. Not my favorite film, but I’ve never been a big fan of cinema verite.
The film ends as it begins, with the hitchhiker found dead at the side of a road.
I am looking for a movie I watched when I was very young in the 80′s. My uncle would tape movies off of HBO and let my parents barrow them and I would sneek a peek when nobody was home. The scene that I remember the most is a bunch of young college kids playing strip spin the bottle around a campfire and they are all getting naked. Then I think one of the hotter girls pics up the bottle and slams it down pointing at one of the shy girls who is not naked yet and say something like “come on your turn are you chicken”. I seem to think they got to the island by a helicopter and can’t remember too much more. I think it was a made for HBO movie. Would love to find out what it is so I could see how much of my memory is correct after 20 some years.
I haven’t seen it but I suggest your movie might be Out of Control (1985).
I think that is definitely it! From what I can get off of IMDB. But I can not find anything about it anywhere else. Keep getting Bruce and Lloyd and other things. Will try my best to hunt it down thanks for the help. How on earth did you figure it out on such a vague description of one scene??!!
I got mad IMDB search skillz. I’ll give away my secrets to help others help themselves: I used the search string http://www.imdb.com/search/title?keywords=spin-the-bottle&release_date=1980,1989 to look for titles with the keyword “spin the bottle” made between 1980 and 1989. There were only three candidates and Out of Control leapt out. IMDB’s Advanced Search feature is useful, but it’s sort of hidden: you can find it here: http://www.imdb.com/search/title.
So glad I found this site. Now I hope someone can help me find the movie I’m talking about.
If someone could PLEEEASE help me find this animated movie.
I would appreciate it. :)
I’m looking for a move called like something “The Pheonix” or “Pheonix” … but it definitely has the word Pheonix in the title. It’s kind of a violent/horror/psychological thriller … my uncle said it was kind of weird but who knows at what point (he rarely watch weird stuff…).
I know Im pretty vague but I’ll keep looking for myself xD
Please help me find this movie! :D
Here’s a list of all movies on the IMDB with “Phoenix” in the title: http://www.imdb.com/find?s=tt&q=phoenix.
The weirdest sounding one I looked at was this one: Phoenix (1995). It’s pretty obscure, though.
Good luck!
HELP! I’m after a movie I watched in the early 80s (81-84) on VHS here in NZ, I was very little at the time, my parents rented this weird arse film, just from the scenes I can vaguely remember, it was set in some dystopian city or township and this family lived in this apartment building or highrise and in the city were this neanderthal type mutants/people roaming around. One other scene I remember is rebirth scene in a room with a giant egg and a character that played an essential role in the film hatched from it.
It was very arty and foreign looking, I would’ve been about 6 or 7 at the time, very dreamlike film, appreciate the feedback.
A longshot guess: Memories of a Survivor (1981, UK).
(Soz my typo’s shocking)
For #14 it sounds like it could be eyes wide shut
Thanks 366weirdmovies, this has been a real mystery to solve for quite sometime. ‘Memoirs of a survivor’ is the one I have been trying to track down, sounds like a strange film,
Great website by the way, love it.
danlo215
Great, glad to help! And thank you for confirming that this was your movie so we can call it solved!
Another one I would like to know the name of, I’ve been searching high and low on the net, is a coming of age movie from the early 80s or late 70s, and it’s not weird but you seem so well informed and helpful in the film realm so I just have to ask, Key scenes: Boy gets bullied at school, so one evening he decides to pull a prank on the bully and his pals he hides his arm behind his back and places a mannequins arm in his jacket sleeve calls the bully an idiot or something, bully hits him with a baseball bat on the fake arm, boy moves back and slowly drops the arm from his sleeve, bully freaks out, he cracks up laughing and takes off. Help?! what is this movie, and no it’s not ‘My Bodyguard’ (Mum and dad took me to that movie on the big screen apparently I cried my eyes out when the head honcho bully was getting a hiding from Bodyguard at the end.)
Appreciate feedback, this movie was on after school in the 80′s.
Ta, danlo215.
Boy could I use your movie knowledge here!
I have been searching for the name of this strange movie for a long time now. I believe it was a made for TV movie (it was on around 9 pm when I was a kid in the 70′s) and is about a boy named Eddie (a dark haired boy with black Buddy Holly-type glasses) and his mother, who is out to lunch. She keeps him locked underneath the stairs in this wierd, secret room. She feeds him in there and he is never allowed out. After awhile the mother disappears (moves out? dies?) and a new family moves into the house. Eddie peaks out through his secret room and notices one of the family’s teenage daughters, who he thinks is cute.
This is all I know of the movie because it was my bedtime, so I missed the rest. I’ve always looked for it years later in reruns and never found it. I think it was named Bad Eddie or something like that, but I can’t find it anywhere. Anyone have any ideas?
I’ve got a good feeling you’re just remembering the main character’s name wrong and the movie you’re looking for is Bad Ronald (1974). It was a made-for-TV movie, the time frame is correct, the main character has dark hair and glasses, and the plot is a match. I haven’t actually seen it, but I almost feel like I have, since I’ve seen this particular movie asked about in “what was that movie?” forums over and over. It made an impression on lots of people who saw it when it aired, but no one remembered the name.
Hi!
I saw a movie once on tv. It was a weird freaky movie and one of the main characters was a judge who took his face off!
I think it was a couple or friends who were lost or their car broke down. They ended up in a car cemetry/ outdoor space with scrap metal and stuff. It was run by really weird guys/brothers. I think they were disformed.
I also remember they had to go to a house where the judge lived. He sat in this typical judge stool. Don’t remember what he said.
The house had trap doors and slides and holes in the walls.
The woman was watching trough a hole and saw the judge taking his face off.
There was also a scene where a trapdoor turned into a slide and ended up in a room full of bones.
It was a long time ago in the nineties…
Hope you can help me. Movie freaked me out when I was a kid :)
I think the movie you’re looking for is ‘nothing but trouble’
“Tony” sent an email looking for a witchcraft movie circa 1972-1976. Please look at the description of “Movie 25″ above and help him out if you have a clue (I don’t).
For Movie #18 – might it be Louis Malle’s BLACK MOON?
Movie #24 seems to be “Nothing But Trouble” a very, very, very bad movie Starring Chevy Chase, Demi Moore, Dan Ackroyd, John Candy, John Candy in drag, and The Digital Underground
