Suggest a Weird Movie!

Please do not ask “what was that movie?” questions on this page. We set up an entire site here to answer those questions. This page is for suggesting movies to be reviewed.

Know a weird movie? Something strange that glued you to the screen with awe, amazement or reverence, while your more mundane minded friends left the room (or theater) in boredom, confusion or disgust? A movie whose omission from a list of the 366 weirdest movies of all time would offend you on a personal level? Something even I haven’t heard of or considered? There are potentially thousands of forgotten films, critically dismissed films, foreign or independent films that never got a proper release, or misplaced oddities hiding out there that may deserve a place at the table. One man can’t be expected to track them all down. Here is the place to mention those treasured curios that no one else seems to have even heard of. Nominate a movie in the suggestion box and I’ll move it up on my review queue, or at the very least, explain why I’m not going to review it.

NOTICE: The “Suggest of Weird Movie!” feature has become a victim of its own success.  At the time of this update, we have about 250 reader suggestions (!) in queue. (More than that since I last updated the page)! Since we can only do 1 or maybe 2 reviews a week, be aware there may be a huge delay—currently, possibly over a year!—between the time you make a suggestion and the point at which it’s actually reviewed.  I considered shutting down the suggestion box as of 2011, but I decided to let you keep your suggestions coming (if nothing else, it tells us what types of movies readers are interested in seeing reviews of). Just be aware that when you make a suggestion, it may not receive the promptest of attention. The best you can really hope for at this point is to bring something to our attention that we might have overlooked. (Also note that although we prioritize the earliest nominations later suggestions may get reviewed before earlier ones if they receive a re-release on DVD or Blu-ray, or interest us for our own inscrutable reasons).

If you can’t wait for one of our staff to review your movie, why not review it yourself and submit it to us via the contact form?  We can’t swear we’ll publish every submission we receive, but we want reader participation and we are fairly liberal.

All serious suggestions will receive a response, as well as all most non-serious ones.

  1. Here’s the review queue of reader suggestions that have yet to be reviewed, in alphabetical order. You can always see this list ordered according to (very rough) intended order of publication in the weekly “What’s in the Pipeline” column (published on Sundays). Of course, at this point the list is so long that it is likely we will have to leave the task of reviewing the items at the end of the list to our children, but whatever.

Also, at the time of this writing the List will soon be completed, meaning that most of these suggestions will sadly never be reviewed or considered. You may consider them all as reader-suggested honorable mentions.

  2. I know it may have been looked past since it is popular, but Hereditary is incredibly artsy and surreal. I went into it expecting a creepy horror film and it actually is one of the most bizarre movies I have seen. It’s loaded with symbolism and ambiguity, and I highly suggest it.

  3. Yeah, and I really liked The Witch too; however, Hereditary completely caught me off guard. I was thoroughly pleased with the surreal approach.

  4. Yeah, and I really liked The Witch too; however, Hereditary completely caught me off guard. I was thoroughly pleased with the artsy approach.

  5. Birdy (1984 I think). Directed by Alan Parker, staring Nic Cage and Matthew Modine. Childhood friends both serve in Vietnam. Upon return, Nic tries to help his friend return to the real world. Matthew’s problem? He thinks he is a bird. No shit. Is that weird enough? Btw, excellent soundtrack by Peter Gabriel.

  6. “Первые на луне” (First on the Moon) is a 2005 Russian mockumentary that posits that Stalin had a secret space program that may or may not have achieved the first lunar landing in 1938. I saw this film at the Seattle International Film Festival many years ago, and it’s stuck with me ever since. It uses the “found footage” technique — in this case Soviet intelligence agency surveillance footage. It has both light- hearted elements of humor, and very grim elements of Stalinism, too. Quite an original and definitely strange film.

  7. I know the chances of this actually getting covered are slim-to-none, but I have to put forth “The Treasure Planet” (original title “Планетата на съкровищата”); a 1982 gem featuring some of the strangest animation Eastern Europe has to offer.

  8. Bread and Circus (2003)

“”Bread and Circus” is quite an interesting little splatter film. It’s gory like “Bad Taste” and sick like “Pink Flamingos”. In the beginning we see a vagina in the ground, which is mother earth. The vagina gives birth to a man (slime and umbilical chord included) The man is forced to be given a normality test by a monk. In the future people who try to be individuals, get hunted down by the government. Some people live in the woods as cannibals. The film is pretty disgusting, but also creative and surreal. Take note, there’s gratuitous frontal male nudity, extreme splatter violence, excrement, and even a guy who gets a beer bottle stuck up his ass. Some of the Scandinavian humor is hard to figure out at times, but the film was still a lot of fun. If you enjoy Troma, John Waters, Pete Jackson and even Peter Greenaway; you’ll probably love this film.”

  9. What about Eating Raoul, from 1982, directed by Paul Bartel and starring Bartel and Mary Woronov? It’s a low budget black comedy about a couple who kill swingers for their money.

  10. I would like to suggest The Mask from 1961, not the goofy Jim Carey one. I saw it with the Nashville Belcourt theatre’s 12 hours of terror and could not believe how surreal it was, especially for it’s time. The movie is half-3D; when the surreal sequences commence, you are required to put on your glasses to enhance the film. It blows away modern crap weird films like Martyrs, Swiss Army Man, and Antichrist. Honestly could not suggest this film enough!

    1. Symbol would probably make it, but I assume availability is hurting its chances.

  11. Yaji and Kita: The Midnight Pilgrims is one of the most fantastically bizarre and indescribable movies I’ve ever seen. Two gay men living in feudal Japan hop on a motorcycle and go on a journey to try to get sober, along the way becoming pop stars, sprouting mushrooms from their bodies and traveling to the afterlife, which can only be escaped via a giant’s flatulence. Definitely a good fit for the list.

  12. your weird films list is awesome : bunuel, guy maddin, leos carax’s “holy motors”, they’re all there ! (it evens contains movies by robbe-grillet and svankmajer ! – which seems obvious, for a french “cinephile” (film buff) like me, but i thought it impossible on an american site – is it american ?) –
i don’t find any film by joao cesar monteiro : that is, in my opinion, a major omission – all of his films are weird (and truly poetic) – i’m give a special mention, in that respect, to “recollections of the yellow house” and “god’s wedding”
    – thx for the good work – not only the choice is excellent, but the writing is delightful !

  13. L’Orange: I’ll add Yaji and Kita: The Midnight Pilgrims into the queue (with the usual disclaimer that we’ll probably never be able to get to it…)

karim benslama: Thank you! To answer your question, we are based in the USA, though we have some writers based in Europe and Australia. I can add Recollections of the Yellow House to the queue with the same disclaimer I gave L’Orange.

  14. Not sure if you’re still taking movie suggestions or if this one has already been mentioned — Stroszek. It’s a German movie I saw a long, long time ago and it’s always stuck with me for some reason, especially the ending, which has to do with a frozen turkey and a shotgun (without giving too much away). For the longest time I didn’t know the name of the movie, but finally found it on Wikipedia.

Also, Secret Ceremony with Elizabeth Taylor and Mia Farrow. Saw it for the first time recently and thought it was rather strange…

Love your website as it’s right up my alley! I’ve seen a bunch of these movies and am happy to find a list of other movies to look for and most importantly, I’ve found I’m not the only one who loves weird movies!! Thanks.

    1. Mable:

Are we still taking suggestions? Yes and no. I am taking them, considering them (often readers suggest movies I’ve never heard of), and writing them down. We are not likely to get around to reviewing them, however. We are considering these remaining suggestions more as reader-suggested honorable mentions. We reviewed Stroszek here. I can add Secret Ceremony, however. Also stay tuned soon for a chance to nominate/vote on one last movie…

  15. Not really a suggestion, more of an observation (though since I still think it greatly deserves a slot it might as well be in the queue), but I noticed that Gymkata has not been mentioned within any of the main posts on the sight. This seems unusual considering it has been cited as a weird movie in the About page, alongside other certified films like Blue Velvet, Un Chien Andalou, and Glen or Glenda. I can understand reserving other slots for films that also deserve to be on the list, but considering it has been nearly a decade since that page’s release, it begs some questions:

Is this a simple change in perception over the criteria in being a best weird movie? Is it intentional spacing out between said films in order to avoid predictability? Is it an overlook in part due to the influx of suggested films? Is it a hint towards the coveted 366th slot that will be as important to the list as the first slot?(I think I have a good idea towards what that actually will be, but I’m open to surprises)

    1. I’ll put it in queue. You are asking a deep inside-baseball-weird-movie-picking question here, and I’ll answer honestly. If I had been asked to pick a list of 366 weird movies 10 years ago, Gymkata would have been on that list, along with numerous other films that it turns out have not caught a sniff in the current project. I mentioned it in the “About” page because it was an example of a specific type of film—the “so bad its weird” movie—that I wanted to insist belonged in the genre alongside the works of Bunuel, Lynch, Fellini, Jodorowsky and other usual suspects. You correctly guess that I neglected it because of the overwhelming volume of reader suggestions. With their suggestions, the readers (and later contributors) helped shape the overall aesthetic of the site, and led me in directions I didn’t expect, so that the List became more of a crowdsourced project than just a reflection of one man’s specific, peculiar tastes. In 10 years no one else ever mentioned or suggested Gymkata (or if they did, just as a footnote); so I concluded that it was a film I personally loved, but not one that reflects a wider consensus of what a weird film should be. I would still be willing to argue for its inclusion if it came to that, but Gymkata is not a priority considering that we have plenty of representatives of the “so bad it’s weird” school and so many other movies to still consider. Some worthies will be left off, sadly; I expect to have a long list of honorable mentions. (And yes, I have tried to space out the picks with different types of movies to keep things fresh).

  16. I seem to remember that Bent Hamer’s Kitchen Stories (Salmer Fra Kjøkkenet) is a pretty odd film.
Since my english is not that good I add the premise as written on Imdb:
“In post war Sweden it was discovered that every year, an average housewife walks the equivalent number of miles as the distance between Stockholm and Congo, while preparing her family meals. So the Home Research Institute sent out eighteen observers to a rural district of Norway to map out the kitchen routines of single men. The researchers were on twenty-four-hour call, and sat in special strategically placed chairs in each kitchen. Furthermore, under no circumstances were the researchers to be spoken to, or included in the kitchen activities.”

By the way I love this page, it’s like it was made for a weirdo like me. Keep bringing the weirdness.😊

  17. XTRO (1982) should be considered for the list. None of it makes sense; the director admitted he just wanted to shock and didn’t try to make a real plot. Two words: midget clown.

  18. I would like to suggest Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead, The Toxic Avenger, and Basket Case

  19. BLOOD BEAT (AKA “BLOODBEAT”) (1983) (Fabrice A. Zaphiratos) (USA)

Bat Sh*t bizarre, and quite frankly I found it to be pretty awesome !!!

  20. Hi, I like to suggest the musical Ma-ma from 1976. It’s a French- Romanian-Soviet coproduction based on The Wolf and the Seven Young Goats by the Grimm brothers.
It’s very much a blast, singing almost all the time. It looks strange and sound strange. At times it feels like something is missing between scenes, I seem to remember that some of the editing is a bit off.

    Sincerily yours,
    Hallvard “HAL Monostone” Østby

Many may not agree with me but I find some of these worthy of being in the 366 weird movies (Wild Thing for example) but this is my opinion only. I just wanted to see if maybe at least one of these goes on the list.

  22. I suggested “Arrebato” (by Ivan Zulueta) eight years ago (https://366weirdmovies.com/suggest-a-weird-movie/comment-page-12/#comment-30016) and I was very disappointed when it was moved to the “not yet on region 1 dvd” list. Not to include this movie in the list for this reason would be a mistake; you should travel to Europe to watch the movie if the “legally distributed” condition is mandatory. I have a legal copy on dvd, you are invited :D.

    1. Thanks for the offer. You can see with the hundreds of suggestions that it’s just not possible for us to cover everything, so U.S. availability is a good filter for us to use to restrict the field. Sorry if you don’t think Arrebato gets a fair shake, but it is almost a regional cult film. I won’t swear we’ll never get to it, but I wouldn’t count on it. 23. Has anyone here suggested Moulin Rouge! As a weird musical. I mean, I can’t think of many musicals like Moulin Rouge!

    1. I think Quest for Fire has probably been suggested before in the 50+ pages of suggestions. Unusual movie, I agree, but I don’t think we can prioritize it this late in the game. It’s hard to come up with a contender we haven’t already considered at this point.

  24. I am surprised this has not been suggested yet, but Seijun Suzuki’s 1980 film “Zigeunerweisen”. It is the film he made after his famous 10 year ban from making movies. Here his style is completely unleashed, as he is no longer held back by studio constrains. Ill be honest I really have little of an idea about what occurs as I found it hard to follow. I think it is an easy contender for the list.

  25. I asked a while back, but has Hereditary been added to the queue or are you guys going to pass on it? I haven’t seen it mentioned on any of the pipeline posts.

  26. Did anyone see “Die Farbe” (2010)? It’s a German film, based on a short story by H. P. Lovecraft – The Color out of Space. (IMDB lists many other HPL works too.)
I guess you’ve done “After.Life” (2009), with Liam Neeson and Christina Ricci?

  27. “The Calistra Zipper Story” is a 77 minute feature, a weird exploration of the family of Calistra Zipper, America’s Favorite Taxidermied Girl who appeared along with her father Anthony as a guest on “The Howard Stern Show” back in 2000. Seventeen human and five animal stars filmed in and around Hollywood, California.

    1. The movie is like a psychedelic drug trip where a giant pollution monster takes a shit on Godzilla.
