We were so fearful of Dark Shadows, Tim Burton‘s latest Gothic comedy, that we farmed out the review assignment to poor sucker—I mean, trusted industry professional—James Mannan for comment. Meanwhile, our staff is staying away from Hollywood summer blockbusters and focusing our energy on weird world classics, starting with the 1966 Czech New Wave omnibus film Pearls of the Deep, which includes a couple of surreal segments and a couple of entries by directors whose work should end up represented on the List. We’ll also dig into the reader-suggested review queue for Cemetery Man [AKA Dellamorte Dellamore], the world’s only arthouse surrealist Italian zombie gore movie, and maybe even bring you coverage of some surprise deep-catalog vintage exploitation films.

It wasn’t a banner week for weird search terms—summer blockbuster malaise must be infecting Google—but we always see something strange in our server logs to pass along to you. We’ll start with the quest for info about a “thai movie she as hot boob and was killing his king” (Google suggests this searcher might have meant “thai movie she is hot boob and was killing his king,” which is really not as helpful as the Googlebot thinks). There’s also the mind-boggling request for “www.empty libido in alex movies.com” (turns out that domain name is still available!) It’s not weird enough to win, but we just can’t pass up passing along this search we thought we’d never see: “mullets for preteen girls.” For our Weirdest Search Term of the Week award, we’re going to go with the elegantly simple, but still incomprehensible search for “plasticity her panties.”

Here’s how the ridiculously-long-and-ever-growing reader-suggested review queue stands: Dellamorte Dellamore [AKA Cemetery Man] (next week!); “My Wrongs 8245-8249 and 117″; The Hour-glass Sanatorium [Saanatorium pod klepsidra] (out of print in Region 1, but we’ll keep looking); Liquid Sky (re-review); 3 Dev Adam; Fantastic Planet; “Twin Peaks” (TV series); Society; May; Little Otik; Final Programme; Sweet Movie; The Triplets of Belleville; “Foutaises”; Johnny Suede; The Tale of the Floating World, Un Chien Andalou, Bloodsucking Freaks; Three Crowns of the Sailor; 8 1/2; Dororo; Lost Highway; Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (official review); Dogville; Julien Donkey-boy; Amelie; The Ten; The 7 Faces of Dr. Lao; 1; Fast, Cheap and Out of Control; Tokyo Gore Police; At Midnight I’ll Take Your Soul; The Trial [Le procès] (1962); Marquis; Hell Comes to Frogtown; Seom [The Isle]; Allegro Non Troppo; Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus; Lust in the Dust; Celine and Julie Go Boating; “Franz Kafka’s It’s a Wonderful Life;” The Magic Christian; Black Cat, White Cat; The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T; Abnormal: The Sinema of Nick Zedd; Robot Monster; Nightdreams; 3 Women; “To Oblivion”; Rubin & Ed; Teeth; Vera; Weirdsville; Prospero’s Books; Inferno; Garden State; Persona; The Real McCoy; Rat Pfink a Boo Boo; Themroc; Candy (1968); Run Lola Run; Pink Flamingos; Buffalo ’66; Northfork; Weekend; The Room; Glen or Glenda?; Night of the Hunter; The Fox Family; Midnight Skater; Angelus; Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs; Twister (1989); Yokai Monsters, Vol. 1: Spook Warfare [AKA Big Monster War]; Britannia Hospital; This Filthy Earth; Conspirators of Pleasure; Piano Tuner of Earthquakes; Clean, Shaven; Bubba Ho-Tep; Sheitan; Innocence; “Chingsao the Clown”; Léolo; 2001: A Space Odyssey; Blue Velvet; ID (2005); Master of the Flying Guillotine; Yesterday Was a Lie; The Ninth Configuration; Love Me If You Dare; Forbidden Zone; The Cell; My Dinner with Andre; The Illustrated Man; Fando y Lis; Rampo Noir; Head; Christmas on Mars; “Broken Glass”; Videodrome; Air Doll; The Ossuary and Other Tales; Arrebato; Symbol; Wicked City (1992 live action); Barbarella; Picnic at Hanging Rock; The Cars that Ate Paris; The Boxer’s Omen [aka Mo]; Portrait of Jennie; Salo, the 120 Days of Sodom; The Last Sunset (1961); Orpheus (1950); A Scanner Darkly; Safe; The Atrocity Exhibition; Slacker; Goke, Body Snatcher From Hell; Color of Pomegranates; Horror Express; Noroi; Cutie Honey; The Shape of Things; On the Silver Globe; Monty Python and the Holy Grail; Sgt.
IN THEATERS (LIMITED RELEASE):

American Animal (2011): Jimmy and James, two twenty-something trust-fund babies, live together in relative luxury, but unbalanced Jimmy becomes increasingly deranged when bookish James explains that he’s decided to grow up and get a job. Over and over, reviewers have used the word “bizarre” to describe it. We prematurely announced this was opening back in March, but this time we really mean it—for New Yorkers, at least. American Animal official site.

Beyond the Black Rainbow (2011): Surrealist sci-fi supposedly in the 2001 vein about a mute woman trying to escape from a mysterious enclave. Despite being handicapped by weirdness, Black Rainbow survived the film festival gauntlet to get an actual theatrical release; we are excited! Debuting this week in Los Angeles and New York City, with scattered showings across the central U.S. to follow. Beyond the Black Rainbow official site.

Elena (2011): Read our capsule review. Distributor Zeitgeist describes this dramatic battle over inheritance of a valuable apartment in Moscow is as a “modern twist on the classic noir thriller.” Playing sporadically across the U.S. over the early summer. Elena US distributor site.

IN DEVELOPMENT:

Farewell to Language [Adieu au Langage]: What may possibly be 82-year old Jean-Luc Godard‘s final movie is reportedly in production. It’s about a husband and wife who no longer speak the same language, and therefore must have their dog translate for them. Oh, and it goes without saying that it’s going to be in 3-D. We really hope this will get the bad taste of Film Socialisme out of our mouths before the Old Wave icon retires for good. Story courtesy of Movieline.

NEW ON DVD:

Being John Malkovich (1999): Read the Certified Weird entry! The Criterion Collection has finally begun stalking the List for new release candidates. Look for a deluxe treatment of Skidoo coming next month. Despite not receiving our finders’ fee, we’re thrilled with this choice. Several of the special features were ported over from the Universal release, but new material includes selected scene commentaries by Michel Gondry, a behind-the-scenes mini-doc, and new interviews with director Spike Jonze and the man everyone wants to be, John Malkovich. Buy Being John Malkovich (Criterion Collection).

Here’s what we’ll be screening next week: every film geek’s favorite avant-garde propaganda documentary, The Man With a Movie Camera (1929); the minimalist Western Meek’s Cutoff (2011); Careful (1992), another Freudian/Expressionist stew from Guy Maddin, this one set in a repressed Alpine village plagued by avalanches; and more Busby Berkeley musical misogynist madness courtesy of Gold Diggers of 1933.

As we begin our review of the candidates for our Weirdest Search Term of the Week contest, we wish to highlight a surprisingly persistent fallacy: many searchers out there believe that Google is psychic. How else to explain searches for “weird movies that i like” and “what was this film about?” To get one more preliminary mention out of the way, we’d like to give special recognition to “onlion saxy grail and hores” for being the only search term we’ve ever seen that does not bring up a porn site in the first page of Google results. That’s some impressive mangling of the English language! On to our standard contestants: we really liked “free longpantys” (for some reason we like to imagine “Longpantys” is the pseudonym of some sort of feminist rabble rouser who’s been imprisoned in Iran, but that’s just us). The judges were also impressed with “hustler sad clown and his love nurse,” which might be the title of an abandoned Larry Flynt video project. But nothing caught our attention like “adult diaper rubber pants made in thailand burnout video,” which gave us a startling mental image while warning us about a potential geriatric health catastrophe, thus earning right to be named 366 Weird Movies’ Weirdest Search Term of the Week.

Here’s how the ridiculously-long-and-ever-growing reader-suggested review queue looks at this moment in history: Careful (next week!); “My Wrongs 8245-8249 and 117″; Dellamorte Dellamore [AKA Cemetery Man]; The Hour-glass Sanatorium [Saanatorium pod klepsidra] (out of print in North America, but we’ll keep looking); Liquid Sky (re-review); 3 Dev Adam; Fantastic Planet; “Twin Peaks” (TV series); Society; May; Little Otik; Final Programme; Sweet Movie; The Triplets of Belleville; “Foutaises”; Johnny Suede; The Tale of the Floating World, Un Chien Andalou, Bloodsucking Freaks; Three Crowns of the Sailor; 8 1/2; Dororo; Lost Highway; Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (official review); Dogville; Julien Donkey-boy; Amelie; The Ten; The 7 Faces of Dr.
IN THEATERS (WIDE RELEASE):

Dark Shadows: The accursed vampire Barnabas Collins (from the cult Gothic soap opera “Dark Shadows”) is resurrected in the 1970s and has trouble fitting in to wacky disco culture. No offense intended to the once-great Tim Burton, but lately, every time you make a movie, it causes a little piece of our collective soul to die. Dark Shadows official site.

IN THEATERS (LIMITED RELEASE):

You Are Here (2010): This Canadian festival eye-opener concerns a woman who discovers various artifacts and disconnected clues hinting at some metaphysical mystery; it’s self-described as a “Borgesian fantasy” and a “meta-detective story.” Opening at ReRun Gastropub in NYC, with late summer dates in Toronto and Edmonton to follow. We’ll look for it on DVD. You Are Here official site.

FILM FESTIVALS: CANNES (Cannes, France May 16 – 27)

Unlike past years, Cannes didn’t sneak up on us in 2012. The slate is fairly manageable this year, with Leos Carax’s Holy Motors the only title we’re truly enamored with (it’s the only weirdish movie playing “in competition,” that is to say, eligible for the Palme D’or). The last two Palme D’or winners (The Tree of Life and Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives) went on to even greater honors (they were Certified Weird by 366 Weird Movies); we predict that unlikely trend will end this year (though we certainly hope not). We’ll be keeping an eye on a couple of possibly-weird films screening in the “Un Certain Regard” category and movies playing out-of-competition: check below to see what caught our eye this year.

Antiviral – Here’s a bizarre premise: adventures in an underground trade supplying fans with viruses taken from their favorite celebrities. The debut of Brandon (son of David) Cronenberg. Cronenberg Sr. will also be at Cannes with Cosmopolis, a (non-weird) adaptation of a Don Delilo novel. Antiviral is playing in the Un Certain Regard category (ironically, his father’s film Crash was the impetus for creating this category, which was invented to keep wickedly weird films from winning the big prize).

Beasts of the Southern Wild – A six-year old girl named Hushpuppy contracts a fever, which ushers in the apocalypse and a plague of prehistoric creatures called aurochs. This one debuted at Sundance. Un Certain Regard.

For Love’s Sake [Ai to Makoto] – Judging by the trailer (which is all we have to go on), the latest from extreme provocateur Takashi Miike appears to be a musical comedy based on “West Side Story.” Playing out of competition.

Holy Motors – A mysterious man named Monsieur Oscar drives through Paris one night, cycling through various personas. From too-infrequently seen director Leos Carax, and with an exciting cast mixing fresh faces with weird movie vets: Denis Lavant, Edith Scob, Michel Piccoli, Eva Mendes… Playing in competition.

Meekong Hotel – A surprise entry from “Joe” (Apichatpong Weerasethakul); this movie is still listed as “in production” by IMDB, but is showing up for a “special screening” at 61 minutes. The synopsis is not too much help, but the film “shuffles different realms, fact and fiction” and appears to deal with actors making another movie at the titular hotel.

NEW ON DVD:

Ganja and Hess (1973): Professor Hess (Duane Jones of Night of the Living Dead) is stabbed by an African knife and becomes an immortal bloodsucker. Playwright Bill Gunn was hired to deliver a black horror movie a la Blacula, but instead created a surreal art film that thrilled French critics at Cannes and bombed in 42nd Street theaters. If nothing else, this seldom-seen film is a major curiosity and gets an appropriate remastering from Kino Classics. Buy Ganja & Hess.

Lady of the Dark: Genesis of the Serpent Vampire (2011): A woman (named “Eve Dark”) is bitten by a snake and turns into a vampire. The director is credited on IMBD with 35 titles in just six years of filmmaking, mostly conspiracy documentaries like Alien from Area 51 and The Murder of Mary Magdalene! We think this will be inevitably odd. Buy Lady of the Dark: Genesis of the Serpent Vampire.

Metropolis [Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis] (2001): A detective and his boy sidekick search for a cyborg girl created by a mad scientist in a future world where robot slaves live under a massive city.
Traditionally, at this point each year we anticipate the readers complaint, “why should I pay for one of your damn Yearbooks when I can read the website for free?” and offer our five reasons to dig into your pockets and pony up the dough for one of these swell Yearbooks:

Unlike the digital version, you can take the paper “Yearbook” into the “can” with you.

If you unexpectedly run out of toilet paper in said “can,” the “Yearbook” can do double duty.

This site may not always be here in the current form. (That’s not a hint, it’s a scare tactic).

It’s distinctly within the realm of possibility that this Yearbook will become a collectible worth thousands/hundreds/a few cents over what you paid for it in five years. Collect them all! In the very near future, anything printed in ink on paper will be a valuable antique! (Don’t believe us? We actually saw a used copy of the 2009 Yearbook offered for $75.78. Don’t pay that, by the way, that link is just for illustration and has nothing to do with us).

Each copy sold will contribute a few cents towards paying our hosting/domain registration bills.

This year we can add a reason #6: If you don’t buy a hard copy you’ll never know what’s on the back cover. (Hint: it’s mildly disturbing and involves pasta).

For complicated royalty reasons we’d prefer you buy from the link at the top of the page or by clicking on the cover image, but if you’d feel better you can also order the Yearbook from Amazon.

There may be a Kindle/e-book version to follow, but we promise nothing at this time. We recommend grabbing the analog weirdness while you can.

Next week’s slate of reviews is a little bit up in the air right now (thanks to “real life” scheduling issues), but here’s what we currently expect to feature: we’ll take our first sojourn into the black, black world of Todd Solondz with Palindromes (2004); we’ll gaze at lovely Emily Browning as she sleepwalks her way through 2011′s Sleeping Beauty; we’ll try to wrap our minds around the concept of Everything is Terrible’s Doggiewoggiez! Poochiewoochiez! (2012), which, as the title suggests, is a remake of The Holy Mountain composed from found footage featuring man’s best friend; and we’ll check out Busby Berkeley‘s strange and lovely Dames (1934).

When you’re looking for bizarre search strings to nominate for your Weirdest Search Term of the Week rule, there’s a rule of thumb you can always count on: the hornier the Googler, the weirder the search term. We relied on that old chestnut to locate this week’s crazy candidates, and we were not disappointed. We start with an anonymous searcher’s quest to find “free cuching porn movei.com” (do we even want to know what “cuching” is?) The odd fetish requests continued to roll in with the somewhat understandable search for “shirtless pictures of weirdo’s,” but get stranger with the desire to find “hot girls shuffling videos” (like, shuffling cards?) But we’ll go with “nude porn photo 0f boobs of heroin of hollywood movie underworld” for our Weirdest Search Term of the Week (just take random sub-strings out of that one and you’ll find sub-Weirdest Search Terms of the Week—”boobs of heroin”?) It doesn’t hurt that Google ranks us #1 for that search term—take that, nudeheroinboobunderworldmovie.com!

Here’s how the ridiculously-long-and-ever-growing reader-suggested review queue stands: “My Wrongs 8245-8249 and 117″; Dellamorte Dellamore [AKA Cemetery Man]; The Hour-glass Sanatorium [Saanatorium pod klepsidra] (turns out this is out of print in North America, but we’ll keep looking); Liquid Sky (re-review); 3 Dev Adam; Fantastic Planet; “Twin Peaks” (TV series); Society; May; Little Otik; Final Programme; Careful; Sweet Movie; The Triplets of Belleville; “Foutaises”; Johnny Suede; The Tale of the Floating World, Un Chien Andalou, Bloodsucking Freaks; Three Crowns of the Sailor; 8 1/2; Dororo; Lost Highway; Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (official review); Dogville; Julien Donkey-boy; Amelie; The Ten; The 7 Faces of Dr.
Trailers of new release movies are generally available on the official site links.

IN THEATERS (LIMITED RELEASE):

Meeting Evil: Samuel L. Jackson plays a serial killer who sucks an average white male suburbanite into a “surreal, nightmarish murder spree…” Directed by Chris Fisher… now where have we heard that name before… oh no, that isn’t promising. Meeting Evil official site.

IN DEVELOPMENT:

The Garbage Pail Kids Movie remake: Does this sound like a pitch you would accept if you were a studio head? “Let’s remake a creepy 1987 flop kids movie based on a gross-out novelty card fad that was popular for about three weeks twenty five years ago!” Apparently, if you’re Michael Eisner, you say “yes, please.” Mike, this kind of decision is exactly why you’re the former CEO of Walt Disney. Deadline breaks the story, and not on April 1 (we double checked the date).

Zomboobies! (est. 2013): How to describe this: possibly what would result if Lloyd Kaufman was hired by a Japanese B-movie studio to direct a high concept Lucio-Fulci-meets-Russ-Meyer script? Whatever it is, it already has a website with a NSFW (in this case, “nearly safe for work”) teaser trailer. Zomboobies official site.

NEW ON DVD:

There are no new weird releases on DVD this week. I’m not sure we remember that ever happening before. Nonetheless, the Blu-ray equipped may find something of interest this week (see below).

NEW ON BLU-RAY:

Miramax Triple Feature: eXistenZ (1999)/B. Monkey (1998)/Malevolent (2002): Multi-movie packs are the latest studio gimmick; they can be good deals if you happen to like the movies featured. This particular collection seems fairly random. eXistenZ, David Cronenberg‘s virtual reality thriller, is by far the most interesting title here. B. Monkey (1998) is a neo-noir with Asia Argento as a femme fatale, and the generically-titled Malevolent (2002) is a generic-sounding maverick cop picture with Lou Diamond Phillips. Buy Existenz /B. Monkey /Malevolent [Blu-ray].

“The Tim Burton Collection”: Speaking of multi-movie packs, now this one is a good deal; seven films on Blu-ray for what you expect to pay for two discs, plus a collectible booklet. The set includes all of Burton‘s Warner Brothers output, meaning you get Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, Beetlejuice, Batman, Batman Returns, Mars Attacks!, The Corpse Bride, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This set is (currently?) exclusive to Amazon.com. Buy “The Tim Burton Collection” [Blu-ray].

The Wizard of Gore (1970)/The Gore-Gore Girls (1972): See what we’re saying? They can’t sell just one movie per disc anymore. This Something Weird double feature lives up to the brand name with two of goremeister Herschell Gordon Lewis‘ weirdest efforts, made in an era when he was trying to reinvigorate his violence formula by adding a dose of surrealism. The Wizard of Gore concerns a grand-guignol stage magician whose illusions become reality after the show is over. The Gore-Gore Girls is about a slasher of strippers, is a comedy, and was Lewis’ final movie for 37 years until he made Blood Feast II: All U Can Eat. Buy The Wizard of Gore/The Gore Gore Girls [Blu-ray].

FREE ONLINE MOVIES:

This is Why Everyone Hates You (2011): This thirty-minute long, self-effacing comedy is a DIY 8 1/2, only with bananas crushed between toes, Spaghetti-O spitting, and a leather slave in a cardboard box. It’s also pretty darn funny. We highlighted the trailer (which you can see here) last week, but since nothing on YouTube caught our fancy this week we thought we’d give you another chance to catch it. Watch This is Why Everyone Hates You free.

What are you looking forward to? If you have any weird movie leads that I have overlooked, feel free to leave them in the COMMENTS section.

PLOT: Five college kids find themselves trapped inside an impossibly clichéd horror movie

situation at the titular locale; if they somehow manage to survive the redneck zombies, they will still have to worry about the puppetmaster pulling the strings.

WHY IT WON’T MAKE THE LIST: The Cabin in the Woods is a brilliantly deconstruted, offbeat horror movie exercise, but even with its squiggly plotline it remains a bit too normal and mainstream for us. But if you’re a horror movie fan, Cabin is the can’t miss event of the year.

COMMENTS: You’ve seen it before. That’s the point. Five young archetypes—the virginal girl, her slutty best friend, the jock, the shy regular guy, and the anti-establishment stoner comic relief guy head out to the cabin in the woods for a weekend of fornicating and imbibing heavily while playing “truth or dare.” Instead, they get chopped up into teen sausage by some hungry revenant whose slumber they’ve disturbed. If you’ve been watching horror movies in the last twenty years, you’ve also seen plenty of films where the kids trapped in the cabin are horror movie experts who know the rules of the game (this one, for example); so, when the jock says “we should split up” and the stoner looks at him incredulously and says in disbelief, “really?,” you’ve seen that before, too. That, too, is the point. In the self-aware horror movie subgenre The Cabin in the Woods is unique in that it doesn’t just parody slaughter flick conventions, it honors them at the same time—speculating about why it’s so crucial that the slutty girl takes off her top, why the chaste chick must outlive her, and about why the killings are so formulaic and so… ritualistic. To point out that Cabin is a genuine horror flick and not a simple parody of kill conventions isn’t to say that it isn’t as blackly comic as any horror-comedy to come down the pike in recent times. Every scare flick needs a crusty old gas station owner to act as Harbinger of Doom and give the kids an unheeded warning not to poke around at the old Miller (or wherever) place. Cabin gives us a Harbinger who’s crustier than the stuff that Freddy Krueger picks out of the corners of his eyes in the morning. And while he’s slyly amusing in his over-the-top tobacco-spitting spiel, Cabin brings him back for a hilarious pure-comedy cameo that shows how hard it is for a Harbinger to get out of character even when he’s not obliquely prophesying the death of college kids. I laughed as much at Cabin the Woods as I did at last year’s full-bore gore-comedy outing Tucker and Dale vs. Evil; but, despite its winking jokes and metafictional flirtations, Cabin works because its postmodern conceits are side dishes and not the main course. It serves us a genuine and very rare course of scares, with real stakes for characters who are not as cardboard as they first appear. Cabin also feeds us the freaky images we go to horror movies to see. The monster design is a big draw, even though the creatures are glimpsed fairly briefly. A scene of a slut making out with a stuffed wolf’s head is icily strange and erotic, there’s the ghost of a Japanese schoolgirl flitting about the edge of the plot, and the carnage of the third act is something I can guarantee you haven’t seen on film before. Cabin‘s only caveat is that it’s aimed squarely at those who are already fans of what Joe Bob Briggs used to refer to as “Spam in a cabin” movies; if you’re not familiar with the tropes, this pop-autopsy of the genre might not win you over. But good horror films are rare, and horror films with original concepts are even rarer; when you find a movie that has both, it’s worth the trek into those dark woods to check it out.

Though helmed by co-scriptwriter Drew Goddard, who acquits himself brilliantly in his first time in the director’s chair, Cabin is most notable as part of a huge year for co-writer/co-producer Joss Whedon, who will have two hit films playing in theaters simultaneously when his comic book blockbuster The Avengers debuts next week.

WHAT THE CRITICS SAY:

“…starts in familiar territory, then gets delightfully strange… the most inventive cabin-in-the-woods picture since The Evil Dead and the canniest genre deconstruction since Scream.”–Christopher Orr, The Atlantic (contemporaneous)

Next week we venture out to the cinemas to check out a little thing called Cabin in the Woods; we’ll finish off our coverage of Redemption’s 5 film Jean Rollin sexy-vampire drop with 1975′s Lips of Blood; we’ll go off on The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension (1984); and Alfred‘s series on Busby Berkeley continues with Footlight Parade (1933).

The volume of weird search terms used to locate the site continues to drop alarmingly; we’re somewhat concerned about a possible outbreak of sanity on the Internet. Still, when looking for our Weirdest Search Term of the Week we work with what we’re given, and we do still occasionally encounter inscrutable searches like “aflam man and woman nu canival.” There was also a weird Donnie Darko mini-trend this week. First, someone was looking to “rent a donny darko head,” which we suppose is understandable. We found the person asking “is frank the rabbit fro a real case study” far weirder, however. Another trend this week, a recurring one which usually produces humorously strange results, is the old “first person Google search.” Sometimes, these are just people chit-chatting with themselves with the aid of a search engine, like the guy who absentmindedly muses “i saw a weird trailer before a movie i would love to rent.” That’s nice to know, but at other times the conversation turns more confrontational, as it did with the exasperated fellow who wrote “ok i found your website…now how do i purchase dvd of the comedian toto.” To this guy we say: thanks for visiting, we have no idea how you purchase the DVD of the comedian Toto, and congratulations on winning our Weirdest Search Term of the Week award!

Here’s how the ridiculously-long-and-ever-growing-reader-suggested-review queue looks: The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (next week!); “My Wrongs 8245-8249 and 117″; Dellamorte Dellamore [AKA Cemetery Man]; The Hour-glass Sanatorium [Saanatorium pod klepsidra] (turns out this is out of print in North America, but we’ll keep looking); Liquid Sky (re-review); 3 Dev Adam; Fantastic Planet; “Twin Peaks” (TV series); Society; May; Little Otik; Final Programme; Careful; Sweet Movie; The Triplets of Belleville; “Foutaises”; Johnny Suede; The Tale of the Floating World, Un Chien Andalou, Bloodsucking Freaks; Three Crowns of the Sailor; 8 1/2; Dororo; Lost Highway; Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (official review); Dogville; Julien Donkey-boy; Amelie; The Ten; The 7 Faces of Dr.
IN THEATERS (WIDE RELEASE):

The Cabin in the Woods: Five college kids find themselves trapped inside an impossibly clichéd horror movie situation at the titular locale; who is the puppetmaster pulling the strings? We passed on mentioning this big time Hollywood horror release last week as too mainstream, too hiply postmodern, but we’ve since changed our minds and now think this could be worth a bit of your weird attention. The Cabin in the Woods official site.

IN DEVELOPMENT:

Bunnyman 2 [est. 2012]: The sole source of potential weirdness in this one is that the serial killer looks like a (far less terrifying) Ice Cream Bunny with a chainsaw. We confess, we weren’t even aware there was a Bunnyman 1. Here’s a link to the not-safe-for-work (NSFW) trailer: Bunnyman 2 trailer.

Mondo Art [est. 2012]: By coincidence, the day I was writing about “Mondo” movies in the context of Sans Soleil and wondering to myself where the Mondos had gone, I get a notice of a new Mondo in production, this one covering the modern/performance art scene. Fringe movements exploited in the shock-doc include feminazi films, insane asylum art, and an “assault rifle aggression” artist. Another NSFW trailer (this time, for nudity and perversion): Mondo Art trailer.

NEW ON DVD:

“Citizen Welles: The Stranger (1946), The Trial (1962), Hearts of Age (1934)”: Here’s a 2.5 movie set of Orson Welles pictures. The Stranger is a solid, conventional anti-Nazi noir; of more interest (to us) is Welles’ adaptation of Kafka’s The Trial, the story of an average man accused of a crime but never told what he is supposed to be guilty of (this movie is in our reader suggested review queue). Both the feature films were already in print, but what makes this 2-disc set a bit more interesting is the inclusion of “Hearts of Age,” Welles’ rarely seen 8-minute first film, in which a young Orson plays Death and which was actually inspired by Surrealism. Nothing new here, but an interesting collection nonetheless. Buy “Citizen Welles”.

Dirtbags (2009): According to the synopsis, this is a retitled (but identical) re-release of Dirtbags: Evil Never Felt So Good, which itself is supposedly a remake of a probably non-existent movie called Dirtbags: The Armpit of Metal. This “special” edition contains an interview with someone called Peter Steele and behind the scenes footage for extra features totaling about an hour and a half in length. Apparently, the movie is a date-rape comedy. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I’d have a lot more confidence in director Bill Zebub if he’d chosen the more elegant pseudonym Bill Z. Bubb. Buy Dirtbags.

“Eclipse Series 32: Pearls of the Czech New Wave”: Although some of these movies are currently in print from other sources, this 4-disc, 6 movie set from the Criterion Collection’s “Eclipse” line still counts as one of our most anticipated releases of the year. Covering the frequently surreal movies of the Czech New Wave from 1966-1969, the star of the set is the “madcap feminist farce” Daisies (already in our review queue). Also of note is the surreal and notoriously banned Report on the Party and the Guests. Other films are the anthology Pearls of the Deep, the eccentric comedy Capricious Summer, the subversive adultery drama The Joke, and Return of the Prodigal Son, a film about which we know absolutely nothing. This set could potential contain multiple movies that we’ll eventually certify as weird (if they live up to their legendary reputations). Buy “Eclipse Series 32: Pearls of the Czech New Wave”.

Girl on a Motorcycle (1968): Marianne Faithful leaves her newlywed husband, gets on a motorcycle, experiments with psychedelic drugs, and has flashbacks inside of flashbacks. This feminist counterculture road-trip film was billed as the European version of Easy Rider. Buy Girl On a Motorcycle.

“A Hollis Frampton Odyssey”: Another compilation of “not for everyone” experimental films from the 1960s avant-garde, of which the frustratingly ambiguous “Zorns Lemma” (1970) comes closest to being famous. Brilliance, or structuralist wankery? Now you can decide. 2 discs. Buy “A Hollis Frampton Odyssey” (Criterion Collection).

The Theater Bizarre (2011): A six-film horror anthology from directors Douglas Buck, Buddy Giovinazzo, David Gregory, Karim Hussain, Jeremy Kasten, Tom Savini, and Richard Stanley. Apparently Hussain’s segment is surreal. Like any anthology, we expect this to be of mixed quality—but we like the title. Buy The Theater Bizarre.

Thor at the Bus Stop (2009): Ragnarök has arrived, and the Norse god Thor needs to take public transportation for his date to fight the Midgard serpent; his annoyed actions at a Las Vegas bus stop spark mini-dramas in those standing around him. Zero budget or not, you have to take notice of a concept like that. The DVD had been sold independently, but was picked up by VCI for a proper release. Buy Thor at the Bus Stop.

The Wicker Tree (2010): Two missionaries travel to a remote Scottish town where the villagers still worship the old pagan gods in this re-make/boot/hash of the Certified Weird The Wicker Man (1973). It’s from original director Robin Hardy and brings back star Christopher Lee for a cameo, but reviewers suggested Hardy should have left the Old Gods sleeping. We’ll probably check it out anyway: could it be worse than the infamous 2006 remake with Nicolas Cage? Buy The Wicker Tree.

Stranger Than Fiction (2006): An IRS agent (Will Ferrel) comes to realize that he is actually a character in a novel being written by a creatively-challenged author (Emma Thompson)—and even worse, he figures out that she’s trying to come up with a plot twist to kill him off. This literate comedy-fantasy with a postmodern premise is one of the biggest hits available for free on YouTube, as well as the only movie starring Will Ferrel that critics actually liked. Watch Stranger Than Fiction free on YouTube.
